  • I figured I would try both of those hand held scopes I looked at last week and see how they would fare in a VCR tape path alignment. Results surprised me.

Digital storage Oscillatorscope is my favorite

The representations on the screens correspond exactly to the megahertz specifications of the various devices: 10 MHZ, 50 MHZ and 400 MHZ.

When it comes to test gear buying the best you can afford makes realignment so much easier.
These handheld ones are fine for audio but not with RF waveforms.
    Buy cheap , Buy twice.

Have you try the fnirsi without the charger plug in? I have a scope that having a charger plug in kill the signal.

Sorry for the stupid question: Is it like on a DAT recorder? Maybe you could make a video using a digital scope? Thank you

They are useless for tape alignment

Got a modern Uni-T DSO... there are more display options than my mind could handle, I believe there might be a view that simulates an analog scope but since I don't usually work with videos I have no idea how to set that up. I am surprised the little red unit could plot something useful out of it.

      I was surprised too.
If only channel 1 was working. Don't know what broke as all I did was open it up and close it and not it doesn't work. It did before.

Is the RF testpoint always labled on the PCB? Or how to find it?

No, its not. Most are not

The trouble with the hand held scopes (crap) you can drink a cup of coffee before the screen catches up . 😂
You just carn’t beat the analog scopes

      That goes without saying

A digital scope with DPO/persistence will work for this application, but cost far more than an analog one.

@@CanizaM My Uni-T has got it. At the time I purchased my unit at about the same price there was a Siglent with a display called super-phosphor meant to replicate an analog scope... and I didn't like the chunky traces and went for the Uni-T instead as I had a good experience with their meters.
It's only about my experience, not suggesting one or the other.
