What a collection of Pelikans. I have the 400n with an OBB as well. I think I will try it with the Alt-Goldgrün too. I have a M800 B and M1000 M. It’s a shame they do not make the extreme broad nibs anymore. They are difficult to find or are priced too much to make it worth it.
Love your videos. Worth mentioning that the Souveran models M800 & M1000 are equipped with a brass piston system which adds to the weight. This is why there is a large different in weight when going from the 200, 400 & 600s. I aboslutely love the size and weight of the M800 making it my favorite. I do have large(ish) hands.
Finally got around to it and watched this fanstastic video. I really enjoyed it! Those 2B and 3B nibs are something! Producing this much quality content is hard work and I want to thank you for your doing so. Your contribution to the community is priceless and so much fun! Keep it up Stephen!
Thank you very much for your kind words: I appreciate it! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I just got one of the last ever produced 3B M1000 nibs... keep an eye out for the review.
Great overview video Stephen. FYI the "05" suffix in the numbering system denotes rhodium or chrome steel trimmed hardware rather than special editions. Though many of them also happen to be special editions.
Very nice demonstration. I've always been hesitant to purchase a broad or double broad nib because I didn't want to waste my money on something I disliked. You have opened up new territory for me. Thank you.
I believe you are correct regarding the feed influencing skipping on the Binderized nib. I have a 1.1mm CI from him on a Pilot VP, have yet to experience a startup or skipping issue (that I didn't induce). That, and my m200 F nib has similar issues if I write with the light hand pressure I favor.
The way you said "Idear" instead of "Idea" (with almost a country accent) at 26:34 just made me smile...don't know why. Great overview Stephen! Thanks a bunch for you videos!
Ornithology has never before sounded so appealing. Took long enough for the vid to pop up! :)) Thanks for the shootout, Mr. Brown! Now, to add a Pel to my stable so that I can make the most of the size comparison :P
amazing review stephen, seeing this has just increase my love for pelikan pen. On a side note does the m1000 f nib flex wider then the 400nn and lastly which of the 2 are the easyest to flex in terms of pressure needed to do the actual flex. My fate is in your hands for my next pelikan pens to buy haha no pressure : )
I believe, and he may have it for other reasons, that he rests his hand on the plastic to keep the oils of his skin off of the paper. Hands produce a lot of natural oil, and of course being resistant to water, it could make ink behave differently. Now, the plastic isn't strictly necessary, but if you have some rather nice paper I would recommend finding something like that to use. I got some at a stationary store and cut it to the size I like with a hobby knife.
Ps. ( sorry ) there is only a very thin gold band attaching the clip to the pen, running between the black top and the cap, not a bezel band covering the whole of the very top as I see on the pens sold today. The body is completely black with no gold trim
I know this is an old video, and you seem to have fallen out of love with Pelikans in the last couple of years, but I've never owned one, and they've intrigued me. I'm also on a budget, so do you think the M200 would be an OK place to start, before trying to afford something nicer?
I thoroughly enjoyed your video though it's somewhat conflicted me on my next purchase. I am had planned on a 400NN next, but now I'm looking hard at the M600. Hard call. As an aside, I noticed you didn't have a 100N in your collection. I got one with a broad flex nib & find it hard to put down. Incredibly, it has a bigger ink capacity than my M800 (based on my simply dispelling the ink after a filling). Wonderful vintage pen. I was wondering if I could impose on you to consider putting a photo of your flock of Pelikans on your website so as to allow a comprehensive size comparison- a more extensive still of what you did with the M400-1000 in the video? Again, thanks for putting so much effort into your videos. Excellent job!!!
great video. I purchased a Pelikan about 25 years ago. I have no idea what number it is. I think at the time I paid about $ 80 US for it. I was wondering if you could identify it. It writes like a dream, and I have loved it for many years. The pen is black, the reservoir is dark, but see thru. there is an outline drawing of a pelican on the top of the otherwise flat black top. The clip is gold and is a long pelican's beak. There are gold trim bands at the end of the cap, one thin and the other thick the later is inscribed with the words: pelikan as well as W Germany. The nib. is gold but fairly plain with the etchings of Pelikan, the logo and a B. I tote this around all over and just want to make sure it's not worth much more than I originally paid for it. Thanx so much for anyway that you can help. ( PS the lobster was cute!)
I have six Pelikans and I need to stop, as they are expensive. I got one M800 Blue of Blue and M805 Stresemann, M205 petrol marble, M200 Green and brown marble, and M200 Pastel Green, I got the M200 Green and Brown marble at a good deal from Amazon.
Thanks for the comprehensive video! it was great, as always. Quick question: you used MB Toffee Brown in your writing sample. Does your bottle of Toffee brown smell strange? I got a bottle and it smells similar to swamp water, but when I asked about it on FPN no one seemed to have the same problem. Thanks again!!
Souveran M800 or a Sailor 1911 NAGINATA TOGI? I like well made good sized pens with attention to details and finish...broad nibs and a really smooth writing. What would you suggest Mr. Brown?
Hey there. Your handwriting looks amazing! Have you adapted your handwriting so it looks like that? Or is that just naturally the way your handwriting looks?
I've heard/read from a few places that pelikan nibs often run a bit wider. Do you have any experience with this? And do you think an M800 medium would be comparable to say, a Lamy M? For notes and such? Thanks for the great videos
I own a vintage m200 from the mid 80ies it has a wonderfully smooth nib, but it scips quite often, now I think of getting an m400 with green and black stripes and MO nib, would that scip less? Thank you very much !!
sir, would you recommend a m400 with a fine nib or a m600 with m? - the price is about the same and both are blue souverans. (the m400 is brand new, m600 is second hand tho.)
Hello Stephen, i´m thinking in buying an m400 Green-Black (in fine) this following Christmas. Which shops can you recomend me with a good price? Thanks in advance :)
Another consummate video delivery, Stephen. Sure, I know this video is now nearly four years old, but what possessed Pelikan to discontinue manufacture of the double & triple broad nibs, as well as the obliques ? Obviously, should you desire any of the aforementioned, it's either a serious hunt for such, or purchase of a standardised nib, then referred to a nib Meister, but then, if you're spending a considerable sum on one of these fine pens, a few extra pounds/dollars/euros isn't going to make a lot of difference. Of course, Pelikan have obviously made some form of economic determination insofar as what (they) are prepared to manufacture, & the fine & medium nib market, clearly, is the most popular, but they have undoubtedly neglected their following for the more adventurous handwritten styles, & it is my consideration that it will come back to bite them on the arse. I have two or three vintage Pelikans, & their flexion is unparalleled with most modern contemporaries - unless you're going to remortgage the house. As ever, delightful viewing, Professor !! :D
Disillusioned...I buy pens for the writing experience. I am not impressed with bling. I bought a Jinhao X450 out of curiosity and then discovered that I have been conned for years about the so called writing experience of the prestige pens. When a $20 pen writes better than my Mont Blanc and Pelikan, then you really do have to take stock. I had put a Z56 nib into my Lamy Safari and it's no better either. My beloved, owned from new, Parker 75 is like writing with a stick in comparison. It's a hard lesson to learn.
Ah.. Pelikan porn! Couple of weeks ago I discovered this wonderful world of FP fans via your vid on the M800, I was hooked since then. I own one and I was wondering if anyone share thoughts on it. Like your take on pens.
+abel adam Becarefull, Pelikan's are like cookies. You can't just have one... I have a M200, M800 and a M1000. (And a second M1000 coming my way next week.)
You get a lot of skipping man maybe it's your writing style. You have nice writing, but its quick and loose, I write in a similar fashion and also get skipping.

I love all your videos. It is a pity that Pelikan stopped making bb and 3b nibs aside from the DUO.
Finally got around to it and watched this fanstastic video. I really enjoyed it! Those 2B and 3B nibs are something!

I did not know that, thank you!

Fantastic pen selection you have sir!
Great Shootout, Stephen. I loved seeing all those Pelikans!
Thank you.
The way you said "Idear" instead of "Idea" (with almost a country accent) at 26:34 just made me smile...don't know why. Great overview Stephen! Thanks a bunch for you videos!
You're welcome.
Fantabulous review. A Pelikan may be my next pen. I love the clear ones ~ I didn't used to until I've seen you review them. Thank you Stephen!
My Pelikan experiences have been very good, so I would recommend the brand.
I love the line of 0.7 on the m200. I know Nemosine do a production line 0.7... but I wish other companies would.
Ornithology has never before sounded so appealing. Took long enough for the vid to pop up! :))
Thanks for the shootout, Mr. Brown! Now, to add a Pel to my stable so that I can make the most of the size comparison :P
I love watching birds too! Thank you so much for this video.
great video,thanks.
i think that the m800 is the flagship pen and the m1000 is over size
That Pelikan Edelstein Garnet ink suits your red M600 perfectly.
I really, really love the Swift/Seaweed Green.
Stephen, you delightfully crazy man. I'm enjoying your comments on stoicism.
Interesting! Thanks for this review.
Love the title of the video. I ran, I ran so far away.
I enjoy your videos very much dude. I bought my first Pelikan a couple of weeks ago. It's an M200 smoky quartz with a fine nib.
+Tech Truth I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!

Everyone seems to forget that the m150 exists
+Suzala Suzala That's a generic description of most Pelikan pens: it could be an M400, M600, M800, or M1000.
.....awesome Fledglings But men... I do love those oldies best. ;-)
Great Colors b.t.w. [ brown is kicking good ]
ThnXs for the Share.
My 400's nib has a surprising amount of bounce for a pen that is only 30 years old.
a very informative video. thank you!
Ps. ( sorry ) there is only a very thin gold band attaching the clip to the pen, running between the black top and the cap, not a bezel band covering the whole of the very top as I see on the pens sold today. The body is completely black with no gold trim
All the 05 are silver and the 00 are gold the 05 it seems to designate the silver trims
Great video! I am a huge fan of Pelikan!
So am I.

Yes, I'm working on that.

Great pens one and all. Love the flex on the vintage 400NN. Well done.
Thank you!

Hey there. Your handwriting looks amazing! Have you adapted your handwriting so it looks like that? Or is that just naturally the way your handwriting looks?
There is a rumour of a modern M400 BROWN tortoise releasing this year! :)
Thank you!
You're welcome.
Could you please do a Montblanc version of this? Something like...."A Constellation of Montblancs"
I only have the 146 and 149, none of the other Meisterstück pens.
Damn your house is at a great position
I've heard/read from a few places that pelikan nibs often run a bit wider. Do you have any experience with this? And do you think an M800 medium would be comparable to say, a Lamy M? For notes and such?
Thanks for the great videos
I think they do, but it's mainly an issue for F or EF nibs.
what is that baby blue ink and whats the red ink?
I'm not sure if this is correct but I remember that the M600 comes with a 18k Gold nib.
Am I right?
Mine has a 14k nib.
I guess it's base on the versions of the pen. Mine is also 18K but many M600 in shop nowadays are 14K.
Pinglei He Their site indicates that M800 and up has 18k nib.
Bravo!
I own a vintage m200 from the mid 80ies it has a wonderfully smooth nib, but it scips quite often, now I think of getting an m400 with green and black stripes and MO nib,
would that scip less?
Thank you very much !!
That's hard to say: the broader the nib, the bigger the probability that it will skip: usually, it's caused by overpolishing of the nib tipping.
Thank you for this interesting answer.
I heard pistons on M800, M1000 are brass while M600, M400 have plastic one. Can you feel the difference in piston mechanism other than weight?
No
@@sbrebrown Thanks! Always enjoying your videos :)
What was the name of the ink? 20:50, and the one in the M800?
J. Herbin Diabolo Menthe and Montblanc Toffee.
sbrebrown And the Jonathan Swift?
What about it :-)?
What brand is it? :)
Montblanc.
Customer: "I have big hands"
Pen company: "Yeah, your pen is gonna cost 4x as much, sorry"
Apparent price of plastic, $400/g
I notice your opening music. Are you a fan of the "Spaghetti Westerns"?
Not a hardcore fan but I do enjoy them.
sir, would you recommend a m400 with a fine nib or a m600 with m? - the price is about the same and both are blue souverans. (the m400 is brand new, m600 is second hand tho.)
I'd take the M600 but that's because a somewhat larger pen
I notice your glasses are "Tortoise Finish". Was that intentional? ; )
Wow!
Hello Stephen, i´m thinking in buying an m400 Green-Black (in fine) this following Christmas. Which shops can you recomend me with a good price? Thanks in advance :)
I don't know where you live, but for Pelikan I always consider missing-pen.de.
sbrebrown
From Spain. Thanks for the answer ;)
You're welcome!
Sorry, but does anyone know what ink was in the m1005? It is beautiful, but I can never make out French words.
Montblanc Dandy Turquoise.
Well, I feel sheepish. :/ Thank you!

BB and BBB are coming back! C'mon Pelikan, all we need now are the obliques!

I borrowed the way you write "B" into my handwriting. Do you mind? ;)
I do not mind :-)
Mhhhhh, i am wondering how much gold you would get if you melt down every gold nib and pen you have. :D
Im not
Ah.. Pelikan porn!
Couple of weeks ago I discovered this wonderful world of FP fans via your vid on the M800, I was hooked since then. I own one and I was wondering if anyone share thoughts on it.

Best pen I ever owned, there is something magical about the nib and how it feels in the hand. Simply amazing.

I don't have the issue either but ink can develop mold.
