  • Tom Snyder hosts a roundtable discussion with Ella Mae Morse, Margaret Whiting, Lina Romay, Kay Starr and very rare video of two singers from an earlier era: Aileen Stanley (sang Broadway Blues for Victor in 1920) and Loyce Whiteman of Coconut Grove fame who is seen at greater length in part 2

What elegant ladies, speaking about the realities of show business
    with such a dignified air.
I hope the singers of today have the same elegance 30 years from now!

God! I loved "The Tomorrow Show" - I watched this every night. This was one of the best talk shows of all time!

It was just fun. Dark theatre - no audiences except the grips and Snyder was so down to earth. You can't find a talk show like this anywhere. People always mention Charlie Rose, who I can't stand - he is always answering for his guests. Irritating

Jake Drew I love his voice. I could listen to him read from the phone book....***Sigh*** He was also gorgeous and sexy.

They could have done the whole show on Aileen Stanley. Love her to pieces.

I have always had great respect for Tom Snyder and his interview style. So nice to see some old friends on this interview of great Great Ladies of song. Denny Farrell's award winning radio program The Original Big Band Showcase available to radio stations around the world from Chicago.

agreed. he was a great interviewer--low key, empathetic---nobody like that now--they are into their egos!

I was lucky not to long ago and found Aileen Stanley singing Chicago on a 78rpm record and that is my home town so felt very lucky. Love her.

To be pedantic, these singers covered at least two eras. Aileen Stanley the 1910s-1920s, Kay Starr etc from the 1940s onwards. Quite different styles of singing akin to say 1970s vs 1990s.

Where is Helen Humes, for example?
    No black big-band singers.

Thelma Carpenter sang with Teddy Wilson, Coleman Hawkins and Count Basie.

Helen Humes was singing regularly in 1977, so perhaps could not take leave for this show. Ella - was a superstar by the 1970s compared to the singers here (except maybe Kay Starr), no disrespect.

Duke Ellington featured several females singers. Arguably the best was Ivie Anderson (died 1949). The others were Joya Sherill, Kay Davis, Betty Roche and possible a few more - can't remember the names.

These record sales figures are way over inflated. Nobody sold over 20 million records in the 1920's. Love these gals, but...
