- In this video we carry out a refurbishment on this very tired looking set of early 1980's Technics 3-way stereo speakers.
This includes replacing the damaged lower speaker cone foams, Tidying up the box case units and replacing the internal cross over electrolytic capacitors.
All of this whilst trying to maintain the original appearance of the units and keeping them going for years to come.
As usual we aim to keep as much of the original components as possible, Only replacing the necessary parts.

Vintage & retro audio equipment is getting more and more collectible.
These particular speakers are in good working order when it comes to sound output. However, They are let down by the physical condition that they are in.
Obviously with any older Hi-Fi equipment, They need servicing to keep working as they were intended.
Restoring these speakers back to how they should be, Keeps them alive for people to appreciate this era of audio equipment.

Love the look of those speakers, great video
Me too, remind me of the 80s Pioneer
Thank you, its appreciated.
Yes, They are a very nice looking set. This is why I felt it so important to tidy them up.
@retfurb you're welcome, thanks for appreciation.
I know right, I'd have tidied them up too, lol
Great job - older speakers are often fun to listen to. You also made them look good.
Thank you. I appreciate the kind comments.

Thank you. I really appreciate the kind comment.
Good job. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you for the kind comments. Will do.... 😀👍
Looks very good! Does the foam/ rubber replacement degrad the original sounds?
Thank you, I was pleased with how they turned out. No it doesn't change the sound. They just need to be fitted centrally, To make sure they operate as usual.
Hi mate what paint is it ? Name and colour please thanks great job 👍
Hello,
The black textured paint is an aerosol, Which was purchased from a local car paint supplier. You can find many brands that do this, As its what is used to repair textured panels on cars. Something like this groveshop.co.uk/ready-mixed-paint/21164-gti-black-texture-coating-aerosol-500ml-by-grove-gtitexb.html?gclid=CjwKCAiA-bmsBhAGEiwAoaQNmu9a32d8v9ZPqzUxeFOUg2zU2ovJPdWmwmrPhexevDDEsBm3KsEDhBoC3coQAvD_BwE
I think that is the actual type I used, If not it I have used it before.
I hope that helps.
@@retfurb thanks mate and the paint for paint by brush?
@@R.R.Defensa No problem. This was just a black carpet dye that I have. It is a pump spray bottle, That is for car interiors.
DO NOT refoam your speakers like he just did
@@mrkrinkle8323 Please can you explain another method of doing this, so viewers have the option to follow that.
The only thing that I would have ideally done in hindsight, is to shim the voice coil with paper. Removing the dust cover first and sliding the paper around the coil. Then fitting the foam and applying a new voice coil dust cap.
However, I was careful to get it central and it has been fine since 👍🏻
@@retfurb do the speaker first & basket second. You got lucky possibly? You need to make sure it's centered perfectly so the voice coil doesn't rub
@@mrkrinkle8323 yes, agreed. I should have shimmed it with the paper, to make sure it kept central.
I was very careful when I did it this time and it’s been fine.
Thanks for adding the additional information.
Speakers look great btw.
@@mrkrinkle8323 thank you
I guess it gives you something to do, but you just spent your time and money polishing a couple turds.
Yes, they may not be to everyone’s tastes. However, it saves them landfill and passes them on to someone who appreciates them 🙂. Thats the main aim.
I had a the same pair 👍
