I've been listening to this for going on 11 years now. I remember listening to this as I was just starting Highschool during a time where I was pretty obsessed with everything metal and techno. My dad was about to die around then, and I had just been dumped by my first girlfriend. This was different from everything I was experiencing and it made me happy. I love her strange voice, the harp is an amazing weapon of choice, and the lyrics are bizarre and catchy. It truly is a timeless song for me.
You still listen to trash like metal? No offense, I can't stand it anymore. So angry, so dark, I can't abide by music that spreads darkness when music was always here to spread light.
@adrianmk2 huh I checked it out (the remix) and I don't think it added anything worthwhile at all apart from some beats I wasn't missing in the first place. Shrug
One of the best songs for art school girls working in the studio in the middle-of-the-night, back in the day. Brings back great memories. Hope young artists are still listening to this muse.
This song reminds me of my sisters when we were young. My sister Lena would listen to this all the time. Lena is flying high now. And I’ve been looking for this song for 6 years.
Joanna is amazing!... i'm 17 yrs old and when i tell my friends i listen to her and they hear her music, they make fun of me heheh.... her voice is beautiful i love her so much all her songs are amazing but this one is my favorite :) her music makes me happy and sometimes maker me tear up...trully amazing
I love to come back to this song every once in a while. It makes me think of being 16 and playing this in my first car on a mixed cd that had some good Joanna newsom, cocorosie, and Dresden dolls. I love her voice so much. Joanna newsom forever 🍀
I am 16 now, and I literally grew up listening to this. I don’t know how my parents found this, because they don’t listen to music like this often, but they would play it on our computer and I still remember it some 10 years later 💕
She makes me feel like I'm turning out to a world that's passionate and not so self loathing. She is a beautiful writer and a fantastic musician. The combination of the two is like crashing into a wall of exploding fantasy.
I remember when this album came out it was at a listening post at my local record store. I knew nothing about her , but listened to the whole album and walked away thinking she must surely be some sort of guitar prodigy. It took a while to realise she was playing the harp!
Wow thank you Roots, for leading me to another great artist to listen to, its nice when one of your fav groups leads you to something else you can enjoy
this was my first JoNew song back in my second year in middle school that i discovered through autoplay on a tumblr blog its been about 10 years and im still obsessed with her
Consensus is correct here. Joanna is playing the bass part with the low wire strings of the harp, and the upper part is on the higher nylon strings. Source: am harpist
Creativity at its best. I got here because of beautiful cover from Sarah Jarosz, and listening to this original makes me understand why this song was covered.
Once again, unbelievable sound quality. Still the best on TH-cam. My speakers are Dynaudio Xeo 3's, and my soundcard is the tX-USBexp by SOtM. Don't know what you guys did, but ...
I first heard this while traveling alone in iceland. A beautiful girl who worked in a cafe would play it, and compared to everything else in her repeating playlist it seemed like this song was on repeat, it so stood out against the bland of all the other music. I'll always think of her bright golden hair flowing around the cafe and the lava rocks and moss and that heavy grey icelandic sky when i hear this.
We should shine a light on A light on And the book of right-on is right on It was right on We should shine a light on A light on And the book of right-on is right on It was right on I killed my dinner with karate Kick 'em in the face, taste the body Shallow work is the work that I do Do you want to sit at my table My fighting fame is fabled And fortune finds me fit and able And you do say, oh That you do pray, oh oh And you say That you're okay Do you want to run with my pack? Do you want to ride on my back? Pray that what you lack does not distract. And even when you run through my mind Something else is in front, you're behind And I don't have to remind you To stick with your kind And you do say, oh oh That you do pray, oh oh And you say That you're okay And even when you touch my face You know your place And even when you touch my face You know your place And we should shine a light on A light on And the book of right-on is right on It was right on And we should shine a light on A light on And the book of right-on is right on It was right on
"People miss the real point - the statement, the vibe, the content. Her harp playing and voice are the colors that express those emotions. It's very personal, and differnet, creative, basically the whole fucking point of music not whos the best harp player or whatever." Right on!
My American Lit teacher brought in this song during our poetry and poetry analysis semester. I'm so glad he introduced me to her =).I hope she comes back to Chicago soon!
This is by far my favorite track off the album. Just wonderful. I feel so sad knowing that she's been around for quite a while, and i've only discovered her music this week. =[
This is my solo song for dance!! I love the style and that it fits my personality so well! On top of that I have the best teacher, it is hard to find such great people to inspire your life with dance!!!!Love ya teachers!:):):):):)
By 1:34, I had become convinced this was a song about how Joanna was a cannibal who was a karate master (5th in the region), and attacked people that she invited to dinner, and had THEM for dinner instead :o....
She is so talented, original beautiful & elfin. The picture of her standing buy the tree in the snow looks like it could be from a lord of the rings film. I wonder what she was watching.

Why would anyone feel the need to make a negative comment? Do you really hate yourself that much? This is a beautiful sacred outlet of pure and intelligent musical art. I suggest if you feel the need to be negative you should go elsewhere by yourself and yell to let it out. It's contagious and only is a mirror for how you view yourself. If you don't like it be tasteful. Try to remain impeccable people.
I really like the lyrics to Joanna Newsom's The Book of Right-On. I read them as alluring with a strong hint of domination. Newsom is fairly non-threatening in form, so her lyrics intrigue. Her voice and musicianship captivate, which could make her a potentially dangerous woman to know.

My dad played this in the car on the way to my first day of highschool.. it brings me right back to that time

Dang hows life bro
It’s still good huh? I love Joanna and she’s not on Spotify 😭
Screw them. Tell them the Roots sampled her song in Right On and Black Thought is one of the best emcees ever. Quote me on that kid

Great song. I also like The Roots song that features a sample from this song in their song "Right On".
Its amazing how much her voice has grown on me, at first I didn't know, but it kept me coming back to her music. And now I'm hooked on it like crack.
She makes me feel like I'm turning out to a world that's passionate and not so self loathing. She is a beautiful writer and a fantastic musician. The combination of the two is like crashing into a wall of exploding fantasy.
A world that is passionate and non-self-loathing - I didn't know I was waiting to see these words describe how I feel. Thank you.

that bass and harp tandem has some serious swagger goin' on. This would the first tune to learn if I ever took up harp.
It's just a harp.

A challenge to play with those syncopated rhythms (or whatever they are are).
Delightfully quirky and melodic.
It fascinated me….always.
Creativity at its best.
I got here because of beautiful cover from Sarah Jarosz, and listening to this original makes me understand why this song was covered.
I didn't realize she'd been doing this song for so long! I came here from a version she did last year on the radio program Live from Here.
16 bit just brought me here! And I am glad to find this master piece. Wish 16 bit continue producing master pieces too 😔

at first glance her voice is a hard element to get past, but indeed it is unique and beautiful. very well done.

Just love the quirkiness of this song. Always makes me smile, slow down and contemplate.

Just begun to listen to her. Very very interesting music. She's a fantastic lyricist.

Jesus Christ this song an absolute banger. I can’t stop listening.

i love her voice its so unique and with all the artists that sound so comercial she is a true talent that is so under rated

Perhaps she had them with some fava beans and a nice chianti?
this song always chill me out. very good
It's a rap song, an epic brag, and a childrens song all at once!
Thank you, Joanna.
this beat is sampled in Odie's catch up
Another fabulous song by one of the most talented artist out there today. She's amazing.
She is so talented, original beautiful & elfin. The picture of her standing buy the tree in the snow looks like it could be from a lord of the rings film. I wonder what she was watching.
Never heard of her until the Roots collab'ed with this song. Both versions are worth listening to.
collab or sample flip ya mean?
the rootssss
Yes, this is good, but the roots sample is awesome
unique voice, beautiful voice, amazing song!!!!!!!
Why does the bass on this song always make my sub buzz?
'cause its real
👍
'Cause you have a weak sub, it's not suppose to buzz.
i think this is my favorite of her songs
cause the beat its funky fresh
She reminds me of Lisa Simpson
+Azerty Trezazer She sounds like Ralph Wigggum.
+CaptainCorpulence :DDDDDDDD My god :D
She's more likable than Lisa.
sounds like weezer
I cannot unhear it now.
Thats my favorite kind of music to blast while driving down the road. ;)
Found this through the sample Logic used on "Shine On". Lovely song :)
this song mellows me completely

Quirky sound. Love the harp and her voice is unusual but lovely. Very good even on the first listen
Here because to Willow Smith and her beautiful voice.
Brings me right back to high school. Joanna saved me from a very dark place.
All talking about logic, but this was first on MTV commercial, nobody remembers =(
I REMEMBER IT

Yea it was about AIDS
I think her music's just so beautiful.
Sends shivers down my spine.

I wish she spoke like she sings. I love her voice and would love to see her live in Berkeley.

Y’all check out the roots song “right on” where they sample this. It’s dope as well. Quest love under this? Cmon haha
I saw her play here in reykjavik. It took me some time to feel her but i do now some years ago.
I want to like it but her voice is jarring to me, kind of like Dillon, but more high pitched
this music does good things for me.
A singing voice that combines a 5 year old child/95 year old grandmother, no.
