❤❤I had knee replacement surgery on 10-29-24 and thank God 🙏 for the ice❤❤I never knew ice could ever be so important to help relieve my pain and swelling ❤❤especially after physical therapy ❤❤
I'm 4 1/2 weeks post op from left TKR and I can say that everything he recommends in this video is working and has been necessary for me, with regards to ice. Once I do each set of physio exercises directed by the clinic, for 3x day, and particularly when I walk about 2 blocks now, the back and front of my knee is swollen and very achy/ painful, when I stop. So, back to my couch, with a front and back ice knee wrap, for about 10-15r minutes and it helps tremendously. I can see and feel the difference. I am also not needing to take any pills thru the day, finally, with this routine. Happy about that because first 2 weeks my stomach was a total mess from all the pills! At night still waking up once or twice with "night aches", and taking 1 x strength Tylenol but sleeping quite a bit better since last week. Havent needed specific heat, but warm shower feels relaxing on back of leg and loosens it a bit before actual physio sessions. Definitely, "ice is my friend!" I've also learned what works for me is doing the repetitive, hard exercises in little bits all day now, first some of the stretches before getting out of bed, then squats or knee bends while standing at sink brushing teeth, dishes etc, sitting in chair to watch tv, and even while walking with walker and then cane, I stop and hold onto a lamppost and stretch hams standing etc, or lunge bend on a veranda stair etc so I dont have to do all at once, and its helping because I hate being tied to exercise sessions. Just have to make sure I note which I have done, or need to do, to complete all daily. Hope everyone else finds ways too. Dont give up! Thanks Reggie for ongoing accurate and good advice!
I haven't iced at all. My surgeon won't allow it. However, I'm on Day 7 post TKR and my flexion is 133 and my extension is +2. The home care PT didn't show up for 3 days so I started using The Go Knee and that has been incredibly helpful.
@@restorepluspt Thank you! I'm on week 4 now. Squats, high step marches, walking up and down stairs, etc. I walked a mile yesterday. I've never iced once. My ortho's orders are heating pad on thigh 5x a day for 5 minutes, followed by massage and stretching. I am really happy with his orders to not use any ice at all. On another note, he also doesn't allow NSAIDS.
@@LeahBrooksJeremiahGardens Great to hear this. I have known of surgeons who recommends what your surgeon did. Most important is you get back to doing what you love to do. You're doing great!
Thanks for making that clear- I’m five weeks out on my second knee replacement and the first thing PT does when I go there is put heat on my knee. I suggested to them to just let me heat up my quads because everything you said is what I was thinking, but wasn’t sure. It makes sense to heat up the quads, but not the knee.
I love icing my knee but after PT exercises I'm in a lot of pain in the quads and especially the hamstring. Thanks for explaining about using heat on those muscles. I'm definitely going to try that to see if it helps me with those exercises.
Is it alright to take magnesium & tumeric tabs & drink tumeric tea after TKR (home 9th day) when still taking aspirin to thin blood to prevent blood clots or should not have till finish course of aspirin? Thanks for all your good sound advice much appreciated.
Good question @jangriffin-fi1yx. I suggest asking your surgeon that question as well. I usually suggest taking the supplements once the patient is off blood thinners (which is usually a week or two) to avoid any interactions that we may know of. I wish you a speedy recovery.🙏
Thank you for advice will be seeing Orthopaedic Surgeon 23/5/24 so will take it up with him. Think personally agree should wait till off aspirin @@restorepluspt
I like your practice of no pills or medications and using alternative natural herbal supplements. Question: How do you feel about mitragyna speciosa (kratom) as a natural alternative for pain relief and as an anti-inflammatory? Thanks.
Good question @kimberlygates4488. I do not have a lot of experience with Kratom. Because of that and the side effects that are related to it, it is not something I recommend to my patients.
8 weeks out after a TKR and swelling is a constant issue. I can’t take anti-inflammatories (or magnesium) because I had open heart surgery 18 months ago, and the swelling of my entire leg is impeding the progress my physical therapy. I have only managed to reach 90deg in the last few days, and need a lot of strong pain medication every day. My surgeon has told me that it may take the swelling 6-12 months to improve and that it is a common problem. Ice is my friend, and I can’t stress enough how much it helps me get through the day, and quite often the night as well.😢 BTW, I couldn’t take blood thinners after the op either because I also have leukaemia. I have had many operations, but can quite honestly say that this is the worst I have ever felt and I regret having had it done. But like most people, the TKR was the only option after years of pain and limited mobility. Mind you, I thought I knew what pain was, but really I had no idea before this! I spent 3 weeks in hospital, and fight every day to keep positive and on an even keel.
Inflammation brings in the proteins that help you heal. It has areas been proven that ice slows the healing of muscles. I used very little ice after my knee replacement and every pone commented on how little swelling I had. Why vasoconstrict an area that needs blood flow to heal?
Ice didn't seem to reduce swelling much. The swelling near the knee is going down slowly, but my calf remains swollen to the point of being quite firm. It's been 10 days.
@w.patterson4413 The swelling on the calf is a little different from the swelling on the knee. Icing can help with the swelling on the knee. You have to approach the swelling on the calf a little differently. I recommend elevating your leg above the heart level and doing ankle pumping to mobilize the fluid. Most of the time that helps reduce the swelling on the lower leg. You have to watch out for signs of blood clot when you have swelling on the lower leg which includes warmth, redness and tenderness of the leg. If those are present, I suggest calling your surgeon asap as this can be a serious condition. I hope this helps.🙏
@@restorepluspt Thanks. Not a blood clot. I tend to swell and bruise after surgery, arthroscopic or, in this case, full on surgery. I keep my "toes above my nose" when I can and pump my feet. Still, my first 5-10 steps are agonizing, feeling like someone's sticking needles into my calves. It'll all go away, I'm sure. I just want it done now. 😀
Hi this is my 14th day home after TKR I've noticed swelling around knee last couple of day reducing & have been using icing 2/3 times a day after exercising/walking around. Also elevating helps a lot found. I wanted to tell you that I had swelling & quite a lot of pain in calves too found gentle massage with hands helpful on ouch spots calf muscles releases inflamation & along sides of knee front incision. Don't use heat pack along incision front of knee but I found gentle warm heat pack under calf muscle helps pain gives comfort. If pain worsens becomes red/tender or if you have fever/chills contact Surgeon. Only natural sore after surgery pacing self best keep pumping feet while sitting helps I still am on half aspirin for another 27 days (in all 35 days) after I had finished using Clexane (?) injections given for blood clots. All best on your recovery journey.
This is my second video I'm watching from you. I had Total protestic knee surgery 9 mths ago and the 18th October my left knee also Total prosthetic knee replacement surgery. I had local anesthesia and there were 4 surgeons. We had a class of about the surgery step by step we were told to ice the knee several times a day. I stayed at the Geneva University Hospital for 5 days. Then I was transferred to the rehabilitation center in another part of the building for 10 days but we worked a lot climbing stairs working out at the gym to strengthen our legs and physio until 3:30pm the doctors came in the morning after breakfast. Now in a month's time my other knee also Total knee replacement surgery. I hope you will answer my comment I'm living in Geneva, Switzerland

Good point @henrymitchell3938. Heat can increase the swelling also. I recommend using heat and ice alternately so you can get the best of both worlds.
