AMC Engine Build Parts from PRW are here! AMC 304 build, AMC 360 build, AND Mopar Stroker!?

  • Welcome to the wild world of what goes on here at Lucore Automotive, where we've got so much going on it's almost impossible to keep track of it all! Today is an especially good day because we've got some very important boxes from PRW showing up which are the last bits we needed to move forward on 2 of our AMC V8 builds... yes you read that correction we're building multiple at the same time. Confused? Watch the video you'll understand.
    It also happens to be a gorgeous windy spring day here so since we needed to run parts to a couple machine shops, why not break the 1970 LeMans out for a bit to do some work truck duties? Any excuse to play with your toys right?
    If you're looking for a cheat sheet on the video here's the short version. AMC 304 build. Check. AMC 360 build. Check. Mopar 499 Stroker build? Check. Complete insanity of over scheduling? CHECK!

    Hydro boost with wilwood classic brake kit. They now make brake kits that fit 15” wheels. Works GREAT!

      Did you do front and rear or just front? Heavily considering something like that because slowing this thing down in a short shut down MIGHT get a bit sketchy!

      When I 8.8 swapped my cutlass I lost holding power by using the explorer discs. I could get at least 500 more rpm with the rear drums foot braking against the converter.

    Four wheel disc brakes. They don't have to be real big. Some of the 70s, and early 80s Trans Ams had factory 4 wheel disc brakes. They would be perfect for your Pontiac!

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There ARE some good options for "stock style" 4 wheel disc brakes that would still clear the factory 15s. But is that ENOUGH brake? This thing puts down some pretty serious power even choked down like it is.

    To allow for low vacuum because of your choppy cam

    hydroboost, disc, disc. oem calipers with upgraded rotors and pads

  • @ritchschut1997
    @ritchschut1997 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am typing this prior to hearing your suggestions for the brakes. Personally, I would convert to a manual setup. It isn't hard to hear just how much overlap that cam has which means extremely low engine vacuum. I would also convert the front end to disk and use a slotted rotor ( I don't suggest drilled and slotted, just slotted will be fine ). That can all be done reasonably cheap. EBC sells the pad and rotor kits pretty reasonable. For a manual master and calipers I would say the stock style parts would do you just fine. If your not satisfied with the brakes after that, then convert the rear to disk.
    Be what would be considered old school with that volvo, small block time. I would also do a cast steel stroker crank. Not suggesting do a 421 like Bill, but some odd ball displacement. I also don't think you'd need forced induction to build something that is fun to drive and yet get some sort of fuel economy. You can do 350 to 400 HP ( crank ) real easy NA and in a package that is that light, it will still be a hoot to drive. 9.5:1 to 10:1 dynamic compression with a good flowing aluminum head and a 750cfm carb with a decent cam will fit the bill and still run on pump gas easy. It is also fairly budget friendly. The only thing I would add, try to find a spread bore carb like a q jet ( or better yet a spread bore holley if you can find one ) that way when just cruising your easier on fuel.
    As far as finding younger machinist go, that is a tough find for 1 main reason. We live in a throw away society who doesn't (generally speaking) believe in fixing things. It also doesn't help that it seems like you get looked down upon if you get your hands dirty while earning a living. Everyone seems to want cheap and easy. When building cars, it isn't always clean, cheap or easy.
    Anyway, I will step down off the soap box now that I have dated myself to some degree....lol
    Sorry for being a little long winded.

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're working on getting our hands on a 401 to build but that won't be happening quickly. Unfortunately those things are also SUPER rare compared to the 360s. Since we're probably going to abuse it.. would feel real bad about hurting a 390 or 401 :(

    • @1982MCI
      @1982MCI ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LucoreAuto you'll have to abuse a 401 really bad tho to hurt it Austin. The high nickel content AMC used in the blocks made the blocks a lot stronger than say ...... a small block Chevy for example, lol, but seriously tho, it's a strong block and the thick cylinder walls give us the opportunity to do incredible things.
      Instead of building a Volcamino, get an 87-91 jeep Grand Wagoneer woody wagon and there's a good many in Ohio and surrounding rust belt states that have them where they had rust in the roof but lower sections were solid and guys are cutting the roofs off while maintaining the front buckets and mid row bench and a huge cargo area with drop down tailgate. It would be much the same as what your talking about with the Volcamino but the jeep will be 4wd, sits a bit higher than Volvo, will have a much better ride than the Volcamino, will be 360 or 401 powered with a good 727 torque flight tranny and they just look fricn cool as he**! Most guys make a jeep CJ style bikini top that goes from windscreen to roll bar behind back seat or if you leave steel roof to right behind back seat and cut it open at the cargo area so everything would still function as normal and you can drive it in pouring rain or snow or mud , etc. It's totally your call but it would be a much easier, cheaper build, would be cool as heck and folks will be stopping you everywhere to talk about it. I can't ever go anywhere in my factory one without folks stopping me everywhere and I think this would even be worse. There's been several on FB the past 6 months done up this way and they are just way cool man! They give the feeling of a Jurassic park style truck on steroids yet gives you the convenience of being able to haul stuff easily in the back. Just food for thought since you were discussing the Volcamino but I'll support you no matter what direction you guys go!!

I am going to put an AMC Gen III V8 into it. Period, I'm doing it. I am hoping I can "revert" my electronically controlled 42RE into a mechanically controlled unit. So, I am seeking (hopefully) useful information and insight. This question is for anyone that has an *_ANSWER TO MY QUESTION_* . I don't want to see comments on what _You_ would do. I want to know if a 42RE can be converted to a 42RH. That's it.

      We've been discussing that for a while, need to find a good option with noise canceling that doesn't cost $2000 😞

    True story. Assembled 454 chevy shortblock. (Dampner. Pan. Flexplate.) In the back of my 81 datsun 310 hatchback it went. Why? It was a runner for $150 and if not taken on the spot, the other guys waiting were snagging it. Fyi. I had a few buddies with me. 3 grown men (at the time our early 20's), we each weighed 200lbs. + the 454. All went well. Sorry for no exciting car breaking, wheel falling off ending.

      The nice thing about this car is nothing is stock or original on it so I won't feel bad about fixing/replacing anything :)
