Brandon just covered this in one of the classes and I didn't even realize how much I was kicking out to the right and struggling to hit line. Once that was adjusted it was so much easier to hit that line shot!
Thanks for the comment Tanner! A great model for this is Bruno from Brazil. See if you can check out a few of his matches. His positioning and timing is immaculate!
So Mark, if the pass from a right-sided player is a bit out of system -- say 10 feet or more off the net -- is it generally better for the hitter to stay close to the setter with his approach, or kick out to the outside a bit and run back inside? The former seems to allow for an easier set to execute that will be more straight up and down, whereas the latter seems to allow (to me, anyway) for slightly better court vision and more total body momentum to put into a deep angle swing.
Such a great question! most setters find it easier to "push" sets away from their body. So in general, we'd recommend kicking out just a little bit. Not nearly as far as a left side would, but a little bit of push room for the setter. 10 Feet, though is still a really good pass so lets start considering the kick out once you're pass is at half court. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching and asking :)
Great video! I'm a right side player, right handed, goofy foot approach. I turn my hand to hit line and it's extremely effective. Blockers and defenders have a tough time reading it. It doesn't have a ton of pace, but it's pretty easy to control with some practice and defenders have a very hard time figuring out where it is going. Glad to hear all the combination of film and practice is paying off!
Awesome video! This is something I've struggled with these last 2 seasons as I've transitioned to a right side player that is also right-handed.

3:16 that right, left, right clean tho
So, from right side, in normal situation we should quite always call a set just near setter? And not open/far
you don't have to but it's always easier to kick inside before taking your approach if you're a right-handed player

Fewer* choices
We just have to make sure people are paying attention so we add in linguistical errors here and there ;)
F@ck! Have I been doing this wrong all the time? #eyeopener
