    Happily I now own this costume, and it is just as amazing in person. My favorite part about this video: what she does at the end (flexing, picking up the spear with sudden authority) - this is exactly what the armor does when you put it on, exactly how it makes you feel. And this is the real talent of Armstreet - the ability to transport you / transform you into your character simply by dressing in their well-made garb. This is why I keep going back to their shop again and again. Excellent job!

      she held the spear ot the wrong end lol! her rear hand was in the middle and the front hand was at the tip! in short she had no authority on the spear when she picked it up. also this armor looks purely ceremonial. too soft and thin to protect against anything with a sharp edge and inertia behind it.

      Yeah its definetly cosmetic only (I hope atleast).
      As that 3mm (by the looks of it) unhardened leather would do next to nothing, even against blunt impacts.
      Stunning craftsmanship none the less!
      For leather to be a workable armour youd need some fairly stiff 5mm (or thicker) leather or 3mm and hardened, preferable 5+ mm AND hardened.
      Even then the protective use would be limited but would be something that could work great in combination with other peices of armour.
      Like for example, ive read that the mongols (atleast early on before they got united) used thick, hardened leather cuirass not meant to STOP arrows.
      But rather prevent the arrows from peircing deep enough to be a vital wound, atleast from some distance.
      Now if thats true or not I dont know, but thats something ive read and seem plausible. :)
      Also, a hardened/stiff leather cuirass over padded armour or maille is something I can imagine multiplying the effectiveness of that underlaying armour greatly!

      @Diego Gomez are you trying to tell a living historian that cosmetic larp armor is historically accurate precisely because it doesnt actually protect in any way other than being lighter than a byrnie? For one thing, 1000 years ago, leather was an expensive utility material but it was also rarely thicker than 1mm. Thats the thickness of cloth buddy. If your plan is to dodge anyway just wear regular clothing.

      @@SlippyCyppy Some leather armour have been used in history, but quite francly, as this leather clearly isnt hardened, nor is it thicker than roughly 3mm it will do little to nothing against anything other than very light cuts from fairly dull blades.
      My understanding is that is is completely cosmetic and I can appriciate that as its quite marvelous craftsmanship.
      For a torso covering leather armour Id say a solid peice of thick, leather cuirass of 5mm or thicker and hardened with beeswax or similar would provide an ok amount of protection, especially if combined with like padding of some sort (prefabebly layered cloth armour that isnt "only" padding).
      That or a lamellar as you mentioned, but it would still need to be 5mm or thicker and/or hardened (preferably both) or else the protection would quite francly be wasted.

    • @sgt_kissekatt6686
      @sgt_kissekatt6686 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SlippyCyppy One thing to add, advantage of lamellar though is that even though you get potential tiny "gaps" that a blade you slide into (from side or above, inbetween the layers of leather I mean).
      A lamellar can be made from many scrap peices that are too small to do much else with while a solid cuirass needs one big good peice.
      Also a lamellar is likely gonna be a bit more flexible.

      @Oracle_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, actually leather is useless as armour. There's plenty of videos and tests that proves that - I'm pretty sure Skallagrim did some tests on this subject. Leather won't stop a spear-thrust, won't stop a slash from a sword (maybe it will slash your skin a little bit less, especially if it's thick leather), won't stop a chop from an axe. A gambeson might stop some of this things tho. Gambeson + chainmail is even better.
      Anyway, this armour still looks good and it's very well suited for a larp or a fantasy movie, so who cares, the video was still fun.

    • @Gabdube
      @Gabdube 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Timothy Rodowicz This is obviously not hardened leather. Also, hardened leather was never viable as an armoring material. Hardened rawhide was. Big difference. The whole point of the tanning process is to maintain the flexibility and softness of the hide, which is counter-productive when making armor. Cuir bouilli was rawhide boiled in wax and oil, not leather.

      @@ArmstreetOfficial id love to see you try to make profittable armor from something like in that video. the stuff you used in that shield maiden stuff looks to be around 1/5 of that stuff in skallagrims video. im also certain noone would waste 6mm leather on armor or be bothered with the effort of that. rawhide on the other hand can be softened with hot water to make it pliable and it then hardens back to a really tough state. not saying this shieldmaiden thingamajig is badly made. im just saying if you wore that to a reenactment festival the authenticity officers would confiscate it.

    Really well-crafted costume armor. I'd buy it if I had the money and wanted to look cool, and it might be acceptable in HEMA (if worn with a gambeson), but as others have pointed out it isn't very combat-effective. The large gaps between the shoulder and the chest, plus the zero coverage at the wrist and the bend of the arm, means a single hit with a feder, synthetic or not, is going to hurt like a beast or bruise a bone.

    Looks pretty, but why on earth have you embossed leather pannels to look like lammelar. If you want decent leather armour, make some actual lamellar

    • @Gabdube
      @Gabdube 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Fun fact: Lamellar was often made with hardened rawhide, laminated rawhide or lacquered rawhide. But no professional company makes historical hide armor. They all make shitty leather stuff, which would never have been viable as armor. Leather is for shoes, belts, purses and scabbards, things that need to be flexible. Because if flexible armor is needed, textiles already do this job much better and cheaper than hide-based materials.

    • @Gabdube
      @Gabdube 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePeacefulIsWillingTo yeah but real lamellar was not even made of leather in the first place. It would generally have been rawhide lamelles, sometimes hardened into a polymer by boiling in wax and oil. Tanning hide is counter-productive for the purposes of armoring because it makes it soft and easier to pierce. Besides, lacquering rawhide or sealing it with resin is durable and much cheaper than tanning anyway. This thing would actually be less expensive if it was historically-accurate.

    • @ThePeacefulIsWillingTo
      @ThePeacefulIsWillingTo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Gabdube I acknowledged your answer but the OP above was telling of the person in the video to make a real lamellar style armor...as in individual pieces of plates of around 300 plates depending on shape and size, of any materials laced together like as a real lamellar would, not the artistic freedom ones from this costume in this video. From my personal experience , I just made 2 lamellar armor costumes using hardened and lacquered paper board of 300 pieces, punched 8 holes each pieces and laced all by myself. It's actually not hard to make for costume purpose, but it's a good way to practice basics of lamellar before transitioning to harder materials.

    I'd be even better if you made an armor version; this is beautiful clothing, but hardly "armor". For example, there is still a demand for hardened rawhide armor, but no professional company does this, even tough that's often what people actually used for armoring in history. Armor could be also be made with wax-boiled rawhide, laminated rawhide, or lacquered rawhide (many oriental armor pieces were erroneously labeled as "lacquered leather" when it was actually lacquered rawhide, it's hard to distinguish it in material finds that have undergone chemical changes over time). Tanned leather was a bit counter-productive choice (outside of ceremonial pieces and collection pieces never intended for battle at the time), as the tanning process is mostly meant to permanently preserve the flexibility of the material; which isn't at all necessary when making lamellar armor. Leather was mostly for shoes, belts, purses or scabbard coverings, mostly things that needed flexibility and could make a compromise in toughness. If flexible armor was needed, textiles did this much better and cheaper than most hide-based materials. Hence, hide-based armoring materials would not be flexible.

      For the armour, 3mm leather by the looks of it and my experience.
      My guess is that the dress is made from linen, its a common cloth from the time and all my viking era clothing is either that or wool.
      Be aware though! Unhardened 3mm leather provides almost no actual protection.
      For actual protection youd preferably want some thicker 5+ mm leather that have been hardened with beeswax.
      Still something like a layered linen gambeson would provide better protection.
      But for cosmetic purposes this works just fine! :)

      I'm certain that there were no "shieldmaidens" because it is an incredibly stupid idea on every possible level. It is literally sending the most valuable members of society - women of childbearing age - to risk their lives in battle, and the trade off is...smaller, weaker, and less aggressive warriors creating a weak point in any given battle formation. Nobody does that, because it's fuckin retarded to do so.

The women that actually did take up arms to fight wore the same armor as the men did, the women back then were not built like the slender women of today. Unless they came from well-off families were they were spared hard work. Otherwise back then, it was hard manual work for everybody. Even women in 18-19th century working on farms were a hell of a lot stronger. My grandmother were built like a tank in her youth, and my mum who also did a lot of heavy lifting in her job were strong enough to compete with your ordinary man.

    Wonderful workmanship and perfect for LARP ect, but about as historically accurate as Power Rangers.

      you don't need to be "very smart" to realize that something that can be cut by scissors can be cut by a sword or spear.

    Leather armour is not armour. It just looks good, doesn't stop a sword or spear. Cuir bouilli, or boiled leather is hardened leather, it was used by viking and early medieval knights and resembles tough wood. Cuir bouilli was used n arm and leg protection, and cheaper helmets were made of it. The word "cuirass" comes from the word "cuir" it means leather in French.

      There is no evidence what so ever that the Vikingr used cuir bouilli.

      Women in battlefield armor would be great, but this is not it.
      Rule of thumb: if you can cut through it with scissors, it's clothing, not armor. For example, a gambeson is armor because you cannot cut though it with the mere force of your hands or arms.

    just putting this out there, but a sword or spear is going to go straight through that leather "armor"...

    Yes, hoards of armoured women in the viking age roamed about in leather armour... 😂 Thank the tv series Vikings for spreading misinformation. There were actual historical females such as Freydis who went charging bare breasted brandishing a sword at scraelings or in England, Queen Aethalflaed of the mercians who commanded her army in the defence of Chester against the Norse, Danes and Irish was a formidable woman.

    ew leather armor (never existed in scandinavia)

    • @ArmstreetOfficial
      @ArmstreetOfficial  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would've been very careful saying something never existed about a period more than a 1000 years ago. Both cloth and leather armour never survived 11-13 centuries to be found, but there are pictures of armor which is not a chainmail, there are a lot of leather clothing evindence and so on. Most likely you're right and leather armor in a form it is often presented in popular culture have never existed but it's still a game, we should say that reenactment enthusiasts are a small part of history-related community and it's not the only way to play

    • @psalmas9011
      @psalmas9011 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ArmstreetOfficial I agree about the game, I also think leather armor is cool and all, but there is so little evidence that it existed that you can basically say it didn't even exist, but people used anything that was hard and could protect them even wood, so yes leather can be used.

    • @ArmstreetOfficial
      @ArmstreetOfficial  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Overall, we are not reenactors and we don't limit ourselves this way. We are making functional or beautiful (or both) gear and armor and clothing which are rooted in history, but we never promised we will make replicas. By our opinion, the world doesn't need one more company which can make a XIV century bascinet so we make new objects, mixing historical, mystic, epos themes and trying to keep it practical. We don't say armor like this ever existed - our goal is to help people to feel like a Viking for a moment, that's it :-)
