People used too and still do compare Nirvana and Silverchair together, particularly when they first came around as they weren’t really known until their debut album 'Frogstomp' came out in 1995, which was just one year after Kurt Cobain died and Nirvana was no more. More so Daniel Johns from around 1995 to 2002 (which was when this concert was filmed) had long blonde hair which looked just like Kurt Cobains, and also because both bands were primarily three piece bands, and with their sound, although their early work had some grunge aspects, Daniel Johns has said numerous times that their early work was inspired more by Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. The guitar used in the video was gifted to Dan in 1995 by one of the guys from the band Helmet (Im not sure if Dave has heard of them but he probably has) Silverchair was and still is nicknamed "Nirvana in Pyjamas" because of the similarities talked above however Daniel Johns has said in interviews they weren’t really inspired by Nirvana at all, so as you and Dave pointed out, it was more of a coincidence with the look, style and sound of the band at the time. Also a final point to make is that Silverchair's sound and style dramatically changed with every year and album. This song is from their second album "Freakshow" released in 1997 when the band was about 17 years old if I am correct. As Dave watches more concerts and songs from Silverchair he will see their songs, the themes and lyrics and style of the band changes and matures dramatically. And on a side note in particular Daniel Johns changed alot in terms of his looks and style every year, he looks nothing like this anymore 😂
Also thank you for doing my request, I do apologise for the amount of requests as I do understand you guys probably have busy schedules but I love Daves knowledge and reactions, and because he is a drummer himself and i am also one I enjoy hearing him pick out small details and themes. Thanks again!
I don’t like Nirvana in the least, but I do like Silverchair. I think the comparison is more on the looks than the sound. This song just stomps. Great reaction. Thanks guys.
Sad the Nirvana comparisons still reign, Daniel is way more talented and had far greater style and genres in his musical catalogue than Nirvana (who I love and appreciate). Maybe listen to Diorama and that will explain Daniel is one of those under appreciated musical geniuses and should be appreciated on his own terms.
I recall there was some bad mouthing in the period after Kurt died, that he was copying Kurt. But I just really enjoyed them and loved their albums back then, even Some them live in 97’. So since we are n Australia I like to recomment a New band For Dave to listen too, called The Cat Empire! I hope he likes this! th-cam.com/video/yExleMLcYvI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wDoBdk0u-UI28_G_
Distorty! Wish I could have heard the vocals a bit better. Here's one for Dave from the one-off album Jon Anderson did with Roine Stolt from the Flower kings. Def has a yes-ish vibe but with a Beatles psychedelic tinge and grows on you with repeated listens. this cut is "We Are Truth" th-cam.com/video/VBpBcknJA6s/w-d-xo.html

No apologies needed! I appreciate the enthusiasm! So should the band. =)
