He brought black music to the mainstream in the 50's white stations would not play black artists. I was a teenager and after finding out about Elvis I learned about Jackie Wilson, and James Brown, an little Richard. he promoted black artist. As James Brown said, "Soul has no color, Elvis was my soul brother" In the Army barracks he was the only one with a watch, and everyone was asking him what time it was so he went to a jewelry store and bought about 20 watches and gave them out to the guys. He was so kind. Parker ruined his chances with other stars who absolutely wanted Elvis to be in their movie. Parker never told Elvis, John Wayne wanted Elvis for "True Grit" Parker said no. Parker was afraid he would lose control and money with a different movie group. Actor Robert Mitchum wanted Elvis for ' Thunder Road". Famous Director Elia Kazan wanted him for "Baby the Rain must Fall' and of course Streisand wanted him for "A Star is Born", Parker killed all the deals before Elvis heard of them. And to top it off, The Queen of England, Elizabeth sent a message to Parker requesting Elvis be shown at her court. And because Parker was an illical Alien he told her no. It is criminal. He was screwed over all the time. So Sad. Love this Ray. Thanks............Mary

One of his co stars said later that even if was unhappy he never let it, never let his unhappiness infect the set. Just another reason so many of his celebrity peers loved him

He did everything better. He did so many firsts. He opened the door for black artists and others, he helped with the civil rights movement. He launched rock and roll to the masses and mainstream. He influenced all others who came after him. He deserves all our love and respect

Ray people say Elvis was a racist why I’m not sure because Elvis treated everyone the same and with respect no matter what race they were. Most people with the money and power Elvis had would look down on people but not Elvis if you did not know who Elvis was and met him you would be shock to find out he was famous because he treated everyone like they were his friend.

Thank you Teresa for this interview....it revealed how much he wanted to have the opportunity to grow as an actor. He wanted to
act in roles that challenged him ....that would give him freedom
to have some creative control over his characters and even the scripts. His potential and desire to create was always there...deep inside him.
Thank you Ray for reacting to this interview and explaining how manipulative, greedy and stifling the " entertainment " business can be...

I believe Elvis could have handled any role and he could have even directed at some point in his career if he wanted it. I think
back then even if he had a role Oscar worthy Hollywood would never have given him an Oscar....never( just my opinion) because he was not in with the Hollywood elites. His acting abilities were in him but the industry and management
didn't care about Elvis only the money end of it.

I’ve seen people with “ dark skin “ break down & cry listening to his music. It got into their souls. When he went into the service, they wanted him to sing for USO. They tried to persuade him & he said he just wanted to be like everyone else in the service. Plus his mom had just died & his close friends said they’d hear him crying in his bunk at night. How sad is that? 😢 He went through a lot in his life. Many famous blacks loved Elvis. James Brown was so distraught at his viewing when he died, the had to take him out several times. BB King, Sammy Davis Jr. etc loved him and the whites were calling him names. I hope his spirit can see us because he’d be so proud of you Relvis. ( Fredricho too)❤❤😂😂😂 Speaking of Denzel, I was in a top Hotel in NYC once & I got into the elevator and I wasn’t paying attention. Then I heard this voice right behind me speaking & I thought that sounds just like Denzel. I casually turned and there he was with a baseball hat way over his eyes. 👀 I stared at him & he finally looked up at me & we both smiled a big smile & he winked & I didn’t bring attention to him but almost fainted . 😂😂. His voice is so distinctive. I love his acting. ❤

Regarding movies, definitely some great ones, BUT I agree with Elvis' feelings. The question could be asked, why did you continue making them if they got bad?
ANSWER: because he signed a long term contract (10 yrs in 1960) and the movies were still good at that time. Elvis didn't know they would be put on an assembly line by the mid 60s, so he was stuck with no leverage.

    • @WoodsWoman822

---------INSIGHTFUL! You said it plain. In fact, when you look at his covering some R&B songs (cover: means to record a song AFTER the original artist had their own hit with it), Elvis' version consistently charted higher, even on the R&B charts. Minority record buyers/radio stations/and juke boxes in public places were all parameters for measuring an artist's performance. Elvis had more hits on the R&B charts than even Chuck Berry.

I knew of several movie roles Elvis was offered; but when I heard that he was wanted for the lead role in West Side Story when he came out of the Army and Parker refused, it broke my heart! He would have been perfect for Tony opposite Natalie Wood’s Maria. Elvis very well could have won that Oscar!!! So many missed opportunities. SUCH A SHAME!!!

Parker signed those movie contracts behind Elvis back..That why Elvis said " The movies he had to do was signed four years in advance." That's why he had to do them . Elvis never signed for it .Parker did which made Elvis obligated to do them... That's what made him physically sick because he was against doing them..They choosed these movies for him n he hated them...Thanks Ray..

When Elvis went into the service, they did want to treat him differently...They said he can perform in there instead of being sent up to the border, watching the Russian's.Elvis is the one that told them " He wanted to be treated like all the rest of the soldiers because that's what he was there for,not to entertain.."..He was always himself n never forgot where he came from..Like he always said" Im only a performer, and im human."

Well said. I love EP! I am a born and raise Puerto Rican from the island so I still remember when they announced in the news EP had died I kind of new he was a singer but didn't know much about him. Back in PR we didn't hear his music but when I moved to Florida in the 80s, there was a very good EP performer at the Flea Marlek I used to go and he introduced me to EP music. That's when I started buying the nusic and just being a die heart fan.

No doubt about it Ray. EVERY SONG he recorded was far better than original artist. Elvis was getting ready to be the first to record MEMPHIS TENNESSEE. He never did because Johnny Rivers recorded it first! I really wish Elvis recorded it anyway. But Rivers did it like Elvis would have! Sighs
