    Your videos are always an inspiration for me.
    I watched your Rolleiflex/Rolleicord video and remembered I had a Rolleicord V camera somewhere that I'd bought in a charity shop about ten years ago for €20. So I dug it out and ran a roll of film through it. While looking for the Rolleicord I came across an Olympus XA which I'd also never used, so I ran a roll of film through that as well.
    Then I watched your Stand Development video and decided to develop both films by that method (which worked out great by the way).
    I saw your Holga photos and remembered I had a Holga which I'd never got round to using, so I put a film through that.
    I watched your Pinhole/ukulele videos and the excellent results you got, so I sent off for a pinhole camera, but in the meantime I'm going to try and take some 4x5's using an empty chicken stock tin (if I get any decent results I'm going to call them "stock" photographs).
    But the main thing your videos have taught me is this...
    As photographers we spend most of the time trying to achieve ultimate sharpness, but it's not really about that at all.
    It's about expression and emotion and experimentation......but most of all about it's about having FUN!

I think this could be a great spot for night photography, with all the guiding lines and lights. I could shoot my Konica FS-1 with the 1.8/40... Now I will need some high speed film. :) Thank you a lot for the inspiration!

    We're due for our once-yearly snowstorm tonight and into tomorrow afternoon, calling for anything from 10 to 40 cm of accumulation. I don't have any really fast film on hand (best I can manage is Tri-X with a hard push), but I'm unlikely to go anywhere at night; if there's 5 cm of snow on the ground I'm stuck at home (can't get up the steep hill half a kilometer from my driveway without tire chains I don't own, and no alternate way out). I do have a roll of Pan F 120, some Fomapan 100, and some 35 mm Orwo DN21 (an ASA 13 duplicating film, great for super-fine grain); those should do nicely for day shooting tomorrow, after the snow starts to build up (assuming I can get up the hill even on foot).
    I *do* have some XP2 Super, which can be pushed to 1600 in Flexicolor, and with bleach bypass will pick up another stop (and might be possible to intensify by bleach/redevelop to gain yet another, thus cheating my way to 6400 -- and I'm confident I can shoot my RB67 at 1/30, so that's as good as your 12500 in your SWC); that might do well enough for night if I'm willing to do the extra steps.

    • @ShootOnFilm
      @ShootOnFilm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      :-) Having lived in California and often driving to Tahoe I got used to them chains. That's an invention of a mad man: hard to put on (I always paid to those snow patrols on the road side to put them on ...), limits your speed to 25mph, and what a noise :-). Here in Finland, we have spikes and winter tires -- so no mater the weather, we just drive.
      Bleach bypass -- maybe I should do a video about that. I develop almost all my color films by limiting bleach -- if not totally bypassing it.

    • @SilntObsvr
      @SilntObsvr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShootOnFilm In North Carolina I'm pretty sure what we call "studded tires" are illegal. Even in Minnesota and Idaho (states that border Canada) they're only permitted a few months of the year, due to the damage they do to dry pavement. We get snow so seldom (as noted, usually once a year) we just tolerate everything closing for a day or two, and those of us who know the score try to stay off the roads so the idiots who think four wheel drive means they can drive with no traction won't wipe us out.
      I carried chains when I lived in northern Idaho; we got significant snow several times a year -- but I also learned to drive in the stuff and didn't want or need chains often. I've driven a whole day plowing snow with the bumper in a 1967 Mercury, no chains, no studs, not even snow tread, just all-season radials. Modern cars with wider tires and such don't do quite as well, and I detest front wheel drive for snow.
      Also, snow is a different thing here than it was that far north. It's never cold enough to lose that "walking on snot" slickness -- snow at 0 C is much harder to deal with than snow at -15 C.

    • @ShootOnFilm
      @ShootOnFilm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SilntObsvr Yeah, there is damage to the pavement. Here, too, studs are allowed just for the winter months. Also, modern cars (==front wheel drive / 4wd and traction control) take all fun out of winter driving. Regardless of the tires you use. :-)

    • @SilntObsvr
      @SilntObsvr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShootOnFilm Well, it's still coming down a bit, but we had about 8 cm of actual fine snow before it changed to sleet (and forecasted to turn into freezing rain and accumulate a couple millimeters overnight). I took my RB67, 50 mm with 0.46x converter, and both 6x7 RB67 Pro roll back and Singer Graflex RH10, one with XP2 Super (EI 800 for bleach bypass) and the other with Portra 400 -- and didn't leave my yard (didn't even attempt to move the car).
      Sadly, I've got more than a dozen rolls of 120 backlogged because of various conditions that kept me out of my darkroom (got a 3D printer in May 2020, hard to find time for both, and ran low on both Xtol -- largely due to the "trade concern" -- and Flexicolor replenisher), so it'll be a while before I get them processed and scanned.

    Hi Ari, I love your photos and your way of making videos. I noticed today that your pictures always blend very smoothly into each other in your videos. There is always a small moment in which two photos give the impression of double exposure. That's why I wanted to ask you if you could make a video on double exposures and if you have some tips on composition.

    • @ShootOnFilm
      @ShootOnFilm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. That is an interesting proposal. Let me think. Why I'm hesitating a bit is this: I think I can get nice pictures e.g by pushing the film into insane lengths -- and I feel sharing that may help somebody. I'm not that proud of my double exposures. I struggle with them and I'm not particularly proud of them. Yet ..... ;-)

    Ari-I love these photos-especially the nighttime ones. You really love the high speed films and pushing. Sometimes you seem to push further than I can find development times for. Do you have an incremental multiplier for development times you use? It must be different for different films. What if you had used HP5 that night? Would you push beyond 3200? Have you pushed Delta 3200 further than you did for this shoot? I love the “set it and forget it” approach to 1/60th at f4. Can’t see the numbers in the dark anyway! At night I’m always getting a flashlight out, taking my gloves off, taking my glasses off, just to see and adjust the aperture settings!

    • @ShootOnFilm
      @ShootOnFilm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks thanks. Multiply time with 1.33 for each stop. That is a very good starting point for almost any film. HP5 goes beautifully to 6400. Beyond that not so much. I haven’t gone further with delta 3200 but I’ve shot dozens and dozens of rolls at 12500. That seems to be the fastest I ever need :-)

    Thank you for your videos. Very helpful. This is my first winter shooting film here in Wisconsin where our winters are similar to yours--not as far north but similar weather. I like that you explain the different kinds of shooting for different kinds of snow + lighting conditions. Anyone who says 'this is how you shoot snow' doesn't know what they are talking about. I am always out before sunrise on long walks with my lab. I find that low light with fallen snow is very challenging. I often like the look of film grain, but llow light, low ISO makes even clean, fresh snow look dirty. Aside from waiting until there's enough light to shoot a fine grain film at ISO 100, do you have any tips for that situation--low light, fresh snow?

    • @ShootOnFilm
      @ShootOnFilm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. Low light-small grain is a difficult combination… without a tripod. I’d use a fine grain developer (such as xtol or microphen), TMax 100 or delta 100 as a film - and the most powerful tool is to increase negative size. Medium format is significantly better than 35mm film, 4x5” even better. The best way, by far, to reduce grain size is to increase negative size. Not always a simple solution, but ….

    I'm a huge fan of hyperfocal settings. It's my standard setting for nearly all situations with rare exceptions, when that simply does not work for some reason.
    I don't understand the present blurred background trend (nowadays called bokeh) at all. They are missing out of a lot information of the scene and it makes photographing quite difficult (especially focusing) and very expensive due to those very expensive lenses for that.

      Yes. Almost always. With such a wide-angle lens, the focus area is so deep -- as I said even wide open 2.8 meters -- infinity. During daytime and smaller aperture easily 1.5 m - infinity. SWC is really not for bokeh ... :-)

    How would stand development play out vs pushing to 12,500? Go SWC.

    • @ShootOnFilm
      @ShootOnFilm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've tried that once. No good. Stand is good in average situations when you need to work somewhere between 100 ASA -- 800 ASA. That's my experience. As Delta 3200 is probably closer to ASA 1600 in reality, stand won't push it far enough. For extreme pushing XTOL or ADOX-XT3 for me, adding 1.3x development time for each stop. Stand development for situations where I have pictures taken in different ASA on the same roll, but still mostly 200-400 ASA film, exposures measured as 100 - 800 ASA: Makes sense?
