I remember when I was growing up that I had a shunt revision and was released from the hospital the next morning, and the afternoon that I was released from the hospital I went and bowled a couple of games. I remember that I was bowling literally 24 hours after having a shunt revision.
I felt like I bounced back pretty quickly as well. I just got my first less than 3 weeks ago on 6/7/24. It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would and I just need to part my hair on the opposite side to cover the incision.
I received mine 5 years ago after my raptured aneurysm stroke. When there are clouds over my head, I know that my shunt is dripping as I get pains behind my pubic bone. I feel like a cyborg. My biggest nightmare is to have my shunt replaced by a new one. It really freaks me out; all of the blood and raw tissue. Good luck to you. You a hero!!!!!
I had surgery on 8/28/24, and I felt the difference immediately, I still have residual pain every now and then. I feel like this was the best decision I've ever made. This surgery was the second brain surgery for me; of course, many other people have had more than two surgeries. I'm doing very well, for now, and I'm praying it continues to get even better. God bought me out of this, and i know He will continue to walk with me throughout my life. I pray for all the other people who are just starting their journey. i am a premature baby (7mos) and got my first emergency operation at 2mos old where the doctor just had to relieve the pressured area so it won't affect me for the long-run. I've had my 2nd operation in Nov. 2005 where the VP shunt is inserted for the first time because of the extreme pressure I felt. the first VP shunt malfunctioned after 18 years, so the neurologist couldn't take the risk of removing the old one but inserted a new one instead, which was beside the original operation are in my head and stomach area. I recently got it last Feb. 12 (3rd operation) and still recovering though the staplers are removed 10 days after the operation. super thankful technology advanced during my lifetime. if it weren't for the fast response of my family, I would've lived differently now (if lucky)
I truly wish you a good recovery. Yes, this is an amazing technology that saved our lives. I received my shunt after a stroke 5 years ago. What YOU went through is my on-going nightmare. I am dreading having my shunt removed when it gets old. But you did it!! So amazing.... I hope that you ok now
These recommendations are so antiquated. I was only in the hospital for 24 hours. I did not have to wait a month to shower and certainly not 6 weeks before driving.

I just got my VP shunt a little over 2 weeks ago, 6/7/24 and I only stayed in the hospital over night, was allowed to shower within 48 hours, and drive when I felt up to it. It currently hasn't done anything to really effect my life per say. I just part my hair on the opposite side now to cover the beginning of the shunt at my hairline.
I don't know where I'm the world you are but here in UK.If you have shunt surgery you have to surrender your driving license for at least 6 months or you are not insured and could face a £1000 fine.
Have had mine now for a year but scared if it could be causing me anything I may not know of especially as I'm no longer in the states where I had it done

There are many reasons for a shunt. Sometimes it is just an obstruction where the CSF fluid needs to drain and for some people the obstruction is resolved through the years. Obviously the problem can come that it over-drains but if you have no symptoms that's great. Another reason for a shunt to be placed is when the brain produces too much CSF Fluid. That is the case with me. I had my first shunt placed at the age of 6 months. I've had more than 20 replacements/revisions. The last one was March last year. Another thing about the fact that the brain produces too much CSF fluid, is that the high levels of protein makes the shunts block very often. Regarding the many types of Shunts, I had a programmable one +- 25 years ago. It was new then but I had so much complications that they took it out in +- 1 year. I don't know how they change the settings these days but at that stage it was with a electromagnetic device. Now if we think about all the electromagnetic fields around us, it's now understandable why it didn't work. Regardless of the shunts and all the operations, I have a normal life and I do Ultra-marathon running and mountain-biking. So yes, I have heard about people lucky enough to only have one shunt in their entire lives but even if you don't it's not the end of the world. Unfortunately symptoms change as we grow up and we must be alert about that.

Diagnosed and first surgery 2008. I was 22. 11 revisions and one removal and replacement after a meningitis infection in vp shunt. Still working to get it dialed in right. In 2017 I had a strata 2 placed and they've had to put in a regulator valve that is computer activated and now they can externally fine tune and adjust when necessary. A year ago they set it to 3.0 to see how I tolerate it. So far so good

No maintenance, just watch for signs of malfunction. My first lasted 30 years, next one 5 years, next one 9 months and the one after that 15 years. It has now blocked and I was given an ETV instead. You just never know and need to pay attention to how you feel. I had two blockages, one infection and one breakage.

Hello. My daughter also has hydrocephalus and also has a shunt. She is 21. A year ago, her shunt stopped working and due to a misdiagnosis, she underwent late surgery to replace the shunt. She saw almost nothing. The neuro-ophthalmologist said that the cause was swelling of the fundus. Within a year after the operation, her vision gradually returned. Now much better. If your son's vision loss is due to hydrocephalus, your child's vision should return after surgery. I want to note that you are a wonderful leader, loving your son. And you are probably worried about his future. I understand how you feel, but a promise from the Bible helps me deal with my worries. I got my shunt last year, 2023, from a motorcycle tbi and according to my dad I didn’t have hemiplegia until I got my shunt installed. I looked it up and apparently it is possible that a mistake during installation CAN CAUSE hemiplegia. Will it be reversed if I get it removed, or do I just have to aggressively tackle my therapy?

Among the many errors in this video, the one about VP shunts being replaced between 6 and 8 years is the most egregiously wrong and irresponsible of all the claims. A shunt can fail at any point from the time it is placed but can also last for decades. Or even a lifetime. Get your information from the Hydrocephalus Association or similar qualified entity or doctor. Nothing in this video is valid.
I got Hydrocephalus at 3 years old and it lasted 23 years until it failed, then 5 years later, it failed again due to an infection. I was so close to make it 10 years.
I got my first shunt at 15 days old, had a revision at 2 months old, a tube lengthening but no issues with the shunt itself when I was 2 years old. Then I had a complete revision when I was 21 years old, and now at 32 I had the shunt valve replaced but the tubes/catheters remained in placed. Shunts can last way longer than a lot of the internet videos claim, so don't let that get into your head and make you think you will need a bunch of revisions. A friend of mine just told me of a woman that has had her shunt for 30 years and never had any issues!
I had VP shunt procedure with brain TB maningitis in 2014 followed by gall blooder removal. Now I suffer with acute back nd knee pain due to which I can't stand and walk for more than 15 mnts..I am also limping while walking..pls help and advise me with proper treatment. As others have said, this video is hopeless inaccurate. The time lines here make no sense. Almost all of them are far longer than necessary and definitely not the norm. I would not assume any of these recommendations to be valid in your specific situation. Some might be but probably not. None of these match anything I have experienced. Seven weeks off work? Six months until driving? These are WAY off.

mine hurts so much when I exercise, without doing weights I dont want to live but the perotenium area is so painfull afterwards

once the valve was installed, did it throw off your balance, if it did how was yours adjusted to correct it
A new approach to shunting being tested is called an E Shunt. Much less invasive.

Gait abnormality is a common sign seen in case of "normal pressure hydrocephalus"
Back pain is most probably due to osteoporotic changes.

Yeh shunt ko set hone m time lagta hai mere papa ko be 4-5 month lage the tab tak vomiting and many more issues
Phir 1-2 month sahi tha condition but now the shunt is partially block
