By far the best, practical, video explaining the presonus board. It has been frustrating to see so many videos that lack the simplicity of your presentation. Presonus needs to hire you.
got this mixer one month ago for marching band to replace stolen equipment. we're only scratching the surface with it but plan to do some recording in concert season. coolest feature: we link the mixer with my macbook pro, set up an ad-hoc wireless network between my mac and iPad (no internet necessary), and i run the sound from the stands on my iPad. SWEET!
I use the 16 channel studio live in my studio with PC and love it. Windows 7 64 bit. Sonar X1 64bit and Sony Vegas 11. Just worked an 8 hour day on Saturday with 12-16 Tracks down at a time and overdubs. They got most of their tracks for 10 songs recorded. I have an mac mini in a soft rack with a router for live gigs and it has done great. Records live solid also. Hit me up if you still need help.
@01fichtner Great Catch! You are absolutely right. Removing the HP filter is done by rotating the encoder knob until the frequency indicator reaches the OFF position. This is the same for both the Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 and Studiolive 24.4.2. The NEW Presonus Studiolive 16.0.2 has changed this feature and now has a dedicated ON/OFF button for the HP filter. As for high passing at 100Hz, that's only for vocal mics. I've found that to be a good roll off point to eliminate handling noise.
Yes, for small systems, I run the Main QSC K12s directly off the main xlr outs. I either daisy chain the subs in with the mains or I use a aux send for the subs. Using an aux send with the subs allows me to only send Kick and Bass to the sub. I kind of like that. I plug each powered monitor directly to a aux output. With the built in 31 Band EQ, I can adjust both the mains and auxes for feedback issues. I have the same control in a small setup that I have in a large setup.
I think the Yamaha 01V96V2 is a good mixer, but there are several very compelling reasons to consider the PreSonus. No, you won't get to use your Digimax preamps but I will say the XMAX preamps are the best available in this price range. You can show others the EQ if you have an iPad or computer running the free control software. One of the cool things about the PreSonus 16.4.2 is it's ability to expand by linking up to (4) mixers together. We've sold several pairs that are out in the field.
@nbaudio Glad you feel that way. I think so too. You can get up and running pretty quickly. On the other hand, there are lots of features, and a ton of flexibility that can take a while to learn.
I would be very happy if someone made a video on: How to assign the A and B effects to a channel. How to connect the mixer to your computer and capture and getting it recognized by Win 7 64bit. I wish there was an A to Z video available in your site...
Nice Video. We need to run a snake 200 ft. What can we do with this board? Can we use cat 5? Do you sell this option? This would be for a church environment in a gym.
I like PreSonus the board, at the time the faders weren't hundred mm, it's what i was comfortable with, but understand it has a total recall, a lot of great features right at your fingertips, PreSonus impressed me no more flipping though multiple screens, had and still have a fire wire interface, the mic inputs are very clean, was using windows, then had issues with firewire, vista no longer offered serviced, unbelievable, it was nice being able to midi a workstation in, PerSonus stands behind products, right before i fell in to a medical issue, was sitting at the computer, heard a crackle, noticed a lil smoke, pulled the power fast, called tech support, they said send it in, i didn't have the chance but I've built ham radio gear and sure it's a diode on the power input, so that's no big deal for me, the products are good quality, however now since i have a board, i'm looking again only this time my mind is set on adat recorders instead of computer based, i think a lot of musician's are in the learning curve, it all comes down to application needs and money, my pockets are bursting with cash the doctors and hospitals are. but to live in this period wow! , we've come a very long way since the fifties, iv'e had the opportunity to mix using MCI, Studer, Eventide quality, to anyone i suggest wait six months, a little more research, a deal will find it's way to you.
On your analog mixer setup, if you have 31 Band EQs on each main and each aux channel, your analog mixer might handle feedback situations as well as the presonus. :) But with an analog setup, we never had time to patch it all up. :)
Hello. I would like to ask this question. I have read about using the fat channel in tweaking audio signals sent to the mixer to make it sound better. Now how do I get this great sounding track bound back or mix down into my DAW so I can get exactly what I mixed and have been hearing after exporting in the DAW. Because it seam any tweaking get resided on the mixer but not on the DAW. I need your assistance please.
@CCISolutions I don't doubt you. I'm very fond of PreSonus as well.. I don't currently own any PreSonus equipment (or very much equipment at all just yet) but I've been in studios that have (ADL 600), and I can't say I've encountered any limitation with PreSonus' products.
@joise69 Sorry about that! Didn't mean to imply that other consoles are garbage. There are lots of great digital consoles out there. We've used and specified Yamaha, Avid, A&H, Soundcraft and many other digital consoles. I just think that Presonus has come up with a really compelling value in the $2-3K range. Now, with the Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 coming out in June at around $1299, pros considering a small analog mixer may move up to the advantages of Presonus digital technology.
I was advised to consider the StudioLive series as opposed to a traditional setup with a rack of gear. With the PreSonus mixers will I not need any compressors, gates, reverbs, chorus, delay, or other effects units such as those that you would put into a channel insert? Also wondering about output processing, and if this has feedback fighting and EQing functions on the outputs. Is there a way to do RTA on these boards? My next question is about recording, I can use this mixer to record each channel individually, not just the stereo mix? If with a mixer like this, I can seriously just hook up my EV powered monitors and FOH, and plug in the inputs and go, just the mixer and no rack at all save for wireless mics, I may just have to think about saving for the all at once solution. This mixer is about twice the cost of the mixer I was looking to get, but could potentially eliminate a host of other purchases. I was already looking to spend at lest a few hundred more on output processing just to start with. Last question, digital snake? Thanks for the videos, now off to look at the 16.4.2 vs 24.4.2........
No, but you should look at the PreSonus StudioOne software package that comes with the StudioLive 16.4.2 mixer. If you want more power upgrade to StudioOne Pro.
For live applications, : Is it possible to PFL individual channels during performance through Headphones at the console? : Also are the sub-groups able to be assigned to the Main-Mix to get more juice out of quieter inputs? ie: a quiet vocalist on a loud stage. : Is it possible to AFL the Aux outs to listen (via headphones at the console) to what I'm sending on stage? : Finally, is it possible to PFL the FX returns to hear what I'm sending to the main mix? Cheers
@pepsidude234 Hmm so I can not change the eq on 2 channels at once? I heard that you can link two of these together for a 32 channel mixer... and the firewire recording is cool, but I dont like the layout for a live mix much! Looks good for strictly recording, but not for me
If I go for a presonus: I don't get to use my ext digimax preamps, I don't get a display showing EQ graphs, which are useful when training others in how to EQ constructively without making mush. The presonus IS expandable - but only if you use their firewire recording interface. I can not find any examples of anyone who's actually done this, and nothing shows how the fade action behaves when you flip from channels 1-16, over to channels 17 to 24. Do you have an answer for how this happens? JW
2:03 "First of all the preamps, we all want great preamps, presonus has great preamps, it's the Xmax preamps, presonus is famous for preamps, they used to do preamps and still do preamps" Getting a little excited are we? Haha. Nice demonstration.
@dangerale HaHa! Too much repetition is an artifact of doing a 12 minute video in one take. Thanks for the compliment, too. I am excited about the XMAX preamps for live sound work. 30V rails, discrete transistor circuitry. Tons of headroom. These preamps have been proven for years in their preamp only products which we have used with some very high end digital consoles for expansion of the basic input compliment on the main board.
Hello good day! I have a question I can't solve for days that has got me tired of not finding a way, is there a way to add a low pass filter to an auxiliary output? I tell you what I need to do: I have connected a 15-inch two-way box to the aux 1 output that I want to use as a subwoofer (I know it is not a sub, but I want to test it), but I do not have a crossover to send only the low frequencies, and the eq of 31 Although I can lower the high frequencies, I cannot completely eliminate them. How can I cut the mid / treble frequencies of the aux output completely (or in fact any output might be INDEPENDENT from the main out WHAT IS WHERE DO I HAVE MY L AND R MONITORS CONNECTED)? Thank you! If you don't know the answer, where can I find help about it, do you know? Thanks in advance (I have the studio live 16.4.2)
Good morning, I have a Presonus 16.4.2, when the master controller screen blue I have an output, but when master controller is yellow, I have no output. Any suggestion?
I have a presonus firebox and it has given me issues eventhough I had the required firewire chipsets on my motherboard and a separate pci card, it gave me issues the whole time i have owned it, I'd love though to try this one out but not sure if it works very well on windows 7 64 bit or not, it seems to work great on macs I've heard, must be windows then, kind of ruins it for me if i can only use it on a Mac.
does it have a built-in audio interface? i record lots of vocals directly to the DAW and then i just mix them down i have an audio interface but i want to have a mixer to make it easier for me to mix, question is can i do this (Mic ==> PreAmp/COMPRESSOR -rack- ==> StudioLive 16 ==> PC/MAC) pls answer please thnx
You can link two StudioLive 16.4.2 mixers together for 32 channels of live mixing and recording. Let us know if this answer does not relate to your question. Thanks
I guess my fear maybe that the chipset on the device will fail in 3-5 years, considering how much they cost, my current experience lead me to hesitate to invest more into something like that, I've been looking at the behringer X32 and it has impressed me for the price.

@anointed01 The 32-bit A/D converters have 118dB of dynamic range.
linear faders? don't you mean Log considering they are the preferred variable resistors used in live audio?

Sorry the faders are not motorized. PreSonus said adding motorized faders would have added too much to the selling price.
Hi! I was wondering if this Mixer is compatible with Cubase 5, Cubase 6, and Logic Pro 9?
I was advised to consider the StudioLive series as opposed to a traditional setup with a rack of gear. Yes you can multi-track using Pro Tools.
Thanks for the video! Please can I ask if there is a pad switch on this desk and a built in graphic eq on the outputs?
do you have a video on the 24.4.2 ? this is a great tutorial, i am looking to purchase either two 16.4.2's or, one 24.4.2..
Con que software se puede utilizar la presonus studio live 16.4.2 como superficie de control para mezcla?

No, but you should look at the PreSonus StudioOne software package that comes with the StudioLive 16.4.2 mixer. If you want more power upgrade to StudioOne Pro.

You can link two StudioLive 16.4.2 mixers together for 32 channels of live mixing and recording.
