    I've been thinking about this myself, and I would've started with Rogue. Goblin Slayer is all about the Sneak Attack, and his Roguish Expertise could be put into Survival for tracking goblins and Insight so he is never ever fooled by them playing dead. The Scout archetype makes him even better at hunting goblins, and prevents him from getting pinned down in a melee with the skirmisher. High dexterity would fit with his light armor and short weapons.
    Also, he was trained by guy called "Burglar".
    Battle Master makes sense. It represents his skill in killing goblins in melee and also out-foxing them in tactics. The carpenter's tools also make sense. I hadn't thought of thought, and I should have. So, yes, Battle Master is more fitting than Champion.

      It's also mentioned he's a scout/ranger/warrior somewhere. In the light novels he pulls out some thieves' tools at one point and mentions to Heavy Warrior and Spearman (who he was working with at the time) that it wasn't his best skill but he knew how to pick a lock. In fact, the reason he was put on that mission was to balance out the party's skills because while on the surface it's a weird "three warrior" party, it turns out that Heavy Warrior is all warrior, Spearman is a warrior/wizard, and Goblin Slayer is a warrior/ranger/scout which covers all bases to some extent.

    I'd go for Variant Human with the Tough feat (because I love feats, they make the game more interesting for me as both a player and an occasional DM) and put my ability scores more like this, Dex 15/20 (he prefers the short sword in combat and wears medium armour, that lends itself well to Dexterity), Int 14/20 (I'd have to agree that he is quite smart, he takes in different scientific processes and incorporates them into the tactics in the fight against goblins), Wis 13/18 (this needs to be at least 13 or higher for multiclassing purposes, if he can hear quite well through his helmet, that's high perception), Con 12/16 (goblins tip their weapons in poison, piss and shit, so he needs to be well prepared), Strength 10 (no doubt he's in good shape, we just need other things more. I was educated by Tulok the Barbarian in character creation so we're taking this build up to lvl 20) and Cha 8 (he speaks in one word sentences most of the time, has virtually no social skills and reeks of goblin blood). For skills, I would take Perception from his being a Variant Human and the Haunted One background for Survival and Investigation. Put your free points in depending on what stats you took, I'd recommend Dex and Wis for Standard Array.
    For character lvls, I'll comprise the 1st 13 lvls of Rogue, specifically a Thief Rogue. His teacher was called Burglar, after all, and in this world, your name is what you do. Sneak Attack isn't aptly named so you don't have to be prone on the ground and covered in bushes & mud to deal the extra 7d6 damage. Any time your scaly companion is within 5ft of a Goblin Champion, you flank said Champion or you just get straight up advantage on your attack against said Champion, that's your Sneak Attack once per turn. For the 4 Rogue skills, I'll take Athletics, Acrobatics, Stealth and Sleight of Hand for better dungeon diving, with expertise in Athletics and Investigation. Cunning Action will help to avoid the goblins by Dashing, Disengaging, or Hiding as a bonus action. You could also Aim to add an advantage to a ranged attack because your party archer isn't really alone on marksmanship skills (yes, I love Unearthed Arcana, so any RAW elitists can back the fuck off). Second Story Work essentially gives you a climbing speed (re-flavour this as a climbing rope) and the ability to add your Dex to the distance of a running long jump. Fast Hands allows you to use your Thieves' Tools, make a Sleight of Hand check as or Use an Object as part of Cunning Action to pick locks, grab that water scroll before that ugly troll roasts you alive or grab ball bearings and caltrops to control the position of groups of goblins. The 1st Ability Score Improvement will go to Dex if you used Standard Array, otherwise grab the Skilled feat for Intimidation, Medicine and Arcana. Uncanny Dodge allows you to halve the damage of an attack if you can see the damage source as a reaction. 6th lvl Expertise goes towards Survival and Perception to tend to your companions. Evasion allows you to take only half damage when you get hit with a failed Dex save or no damage when you succeed. 8th lvl ASI goes to either another Dex improvement or the Prodigy feat, choose Animal Handling for your pet budgie or your cousin's cows. 9th Thieves get Supreme Sneak to gain advantage on any Stealth check when you don't move more than half speed. Your 10th lvl ASI should start on Wis for something we're going to get later, otherwise Defensive Duellist gives you + prof bonus to your AC as a reaction whilst wielding a finesse weapon. Reliable Talent means that you can no longer roll below a 10 on any skill check you're proficient with. 12th lvl ASI can continue adding to Wis or grabbing the Dungeon Delver feat so you can scout for traps, spring them and sense secret doors with your dumb human eyes. Use Magic Device allows you to use any magic item regardless of race or class restriction for anything the Witch gives you.
    Here comes the multiclass with 1st lvl UA Class Features Ranger. From the Deft Explorer list of features, Canny will give a skill from the Ranger list, go for History and you get another from the multiclass, go for Nature. Favoured Foe casts a concentration free Hunter's Mark a number of times equal to your Wisdom per short/long rest (it's 5 with my ideal stats or 4 with Standard Array) so if there is a big bad goblin boss, you get extra d6 damage to hit them. Choose the Dueling Fighting Style for +2 to your one handed weapon damage, this works with that targe strapped to your arm. Longstrider increases your movement by 10ft and Jump triples your jumping height/distance, mitigating your low Str score. The Hunter Conclave specialises in taking out all types of foes. Choose a Tactical Manoeuvre from Hunter's Prey, goblins come in large packs and Horde Breaker allows you to attack another creature within 5ft of your first target with your shortsword. The Alarm spell can be placed on any door, window or area no larger than 20ft to give off a mental ping or an audible bell to alarm any allies of stray goblins wandering into your area. The final ASI allows you to get a capped Wis for 5 Favoured Foe uses or if you already have that, the Medium Armour Master mitigates any disadvantages that Half Plate has and doesn't impose disadvantage on any Stealth check you make. Extra Attack is standard among martial classes, so you can attack 2 times with the Attack action. Magic Weapon makes your weapon magical for overcoming resistances/immunities and gives it +1 to attack and damage rolls. Choose another Deft Explorer feature, in this case Tireless to give yourself d10 + Wis mod 5 times before recharging on a short/long rest. 7th lvl Hunters can Escape the Horde, so that attacks against you are made with disadvantage. Pass Without Trace will add +10 to your Stealth checks and that of any creature within 30ft so that even your clumsy Cleric, stocky Dwarven Druid and lumbering Lizardfolk priest don't attract too much attention to you.
    Pros:
    Tons of damage, with Sneak Attack, concentration free Hunter's Mark, Magic Weapon and Horde Breaker
    Hard to hit, you get a shield, exceptional AC, Uncanny Dodge, Evasion and Escape the Horde
    Mobility options to go wherever you want
    Lots of skills to pay the bills, so roleplay it up
    Cons:
    Low Str, so getting restrained is a bit of a pain
    Low Cha, banishment is no fun and you're socially awkward
    Low Con, you need to be able to dodge because Con saves are real
    Specialised a bit too much in dungeon delving so you’re not as useful in battlefield scenarios unless it’s against goblins

      One: Great build. Love it. Two: While he is a silver rank, I agree that he should be level 20 especially because he’s known for being way overqualified to be that rank. The only reason he’s still silver is because he only takes goblin-related missions, & only missions with much greater importance are recognized officially that are enough to get higher up.

    Fighter/Ranger is good, since that's canonically what it says on his registration sheet (assuming you can call that canon).
    Charisma for the dump stat makes the most sense, since he's nice but uh...Charismatic he ain't.
    And Honestly I'd put constitution as his highest stat, since he's a tough bastard who's survived a LOT. Then dexterity for fighting in close quarters and ranged attacks. Then either Strength or Wisdom. He's not that strong compared to some of the other adventurers at that guild and he's not that smart. He's learned through trial and error and people telling him things. And then of course Charisma get's dumped.
    And I only know this because I was trying to do this exact thing, but his armor is almost exactly described in the Player's Handbook as Splint. Metal affixed to leather, with chain-mail protecting the joints. This and half plate both give disadvantage on stealth so that doesn't make a difference. Splint is also significantly cheaper and if there's one thing Goblin Slayer doesn't do it's break the bank on his equipment.

      Get barbarian, he does rage

  • @wordforger
    @wordforger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A few things. 1) I believe he's also got a level of rogue thrown in there. It's by no means his best skills, but he can set/notice/and disarm traps and even pulls out some lockpicks at one point in the light novels. It's also mentioned he's a ranger/warrior/scout hybrid a couple places. 2) I'd argue he's got a higher Wisdom than intelligence, and that his intelligence is actually incredibly average. Intelligence has a lot more book-learning to it, and it's pretty clear the guy is seriously lacking in that department when he can't name or remember any monster that's not a goblin. His tactical knowledge and clever use of items is more a matter of "common sense" and experience than anything. Plus all the Wisdom stats feed into his ability to track goblins and take care of his teammates. His Wisdom is not INCREDIBLY high, though, given, as you said, that there are likely to be long-lasting consequences to flooding or collapsing tunnels. 3) Physical stats I believe would go Con, Dex, then Str in order of importance, given he spends a lot of time throwing things and seems to rely more on his ability to move than to withstand a hit given his preference for lighter armor, but that he's also something of a determinator.
    So using your array, I'd put his stats at Str: 13, Dex: 14, Con: 15, Int: 10, Wis: 12, Cha: 8, with the option to switch Str and Wis depending on which you think he'd need more to do what he does.

  • @mushroomking8304
    @mushroomking8304 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I like this one quite a bit, however, I don't think he is that high of a level. A level 20 character is supposed to be really rare, a level 15 character is around the level of the strongest knights and spell casters in a kingdom. Taking that into consideration, and that Goblin slayer only kills goblins, I think he is more around the level of 6 (5 fighter, 1 ranger) . I almost want to say that he is part barbarian because of his rage mode, but I think the rolling of the dice was his action surge and second wind at play. The big reason as to why I don't think Goblin slayer could be a level 16 is because of how quickly goblins can actually defeat him. A couple of hits and he is down for the count against a goblin champion, or an ogre (though the ogre was likely a dnd Oni, and the goblin champions on par with a troll, challenge rating 7 and 5, which would make sense that a character at 6th level would struggle against them).

    • @Nehfarius
      @Nehfarius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mind you, the goblins seen in his campaign are a good bit more hardcore then the average gobbo is, so a few bad dice-rolls may well put him on the back foot. Paired with the fact that he doesn't seem to use magic items, either.

    • @mushroomking8304
      @mushroomking8304 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Nehfarius I don't think they are. Normal DnD goblins can hit hard against normal people, which is why I would argue that they are the same. Goblins have an Intelligence of 10, so about the same as a human. I would say that you could argue that goblins in DnD are actually stronger than in goblin slayer, but overall are about the same.
      I think goblin slayer is a good example that the hero does not need to be extremely overpowered inorder to be strong and effective. Against normal goblins, an adventuring team of level 5 could get wrecked by a surprise round alone, while goblin slayer prevails because he out wits his enemy, because he is prepared. He can also stand his ground against larger enemies in which most people would be helpless against, such as the Oni he defeated, which to some extent could also be compared to the DnD Oni which is Cr 7. That was a hard encounter for him, but he prevailed.

    • @srdxxx
      @srdxxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you read the light novels they describe platinum ranks as legendary heroes that only show up every few generations and adventurers that reach gold rank are appointed to carry out missions for the government, so silver is as high as you can go and still be an independent adventurer. So 16 really does fit for silver rank.

    • @mushroomking8304
      @mushroomking8304 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@srdxxx I would still disagree. If we look at it through that same concept, platinum heroes would be level 17-20 with good gear (Heroes that can take on dragons liches and the like), gold would be level 13-16, and silver would likely be between 8-12. Goblin slayer likely being a low-mid ranked silver, which would make him level 10 at best. My point though was that you could do everything goblin slayer can do at level 6. Goblin slayer himself may be of a higher level, even though he has a low health pool and cannot do a lot of damage in a straight on fight. I would think that he is a battle master fighter as he has maneuvers against stronger enemies. The really epic scenes of goblin slayer getting up would be his second wind, and the times where does a lot of damage such as strangling with human hair could be his action surge going into affect.
      Most people seem to forget that even a level 1 player character has trained in their combat field for an entire year and should be equivalated to a solider or guard. They are strong people.

    I hate to be rude here but I feel like you got intelligence and wisdom completely swapped.
    Wisdom is completely based on using your surroundings while intelligence is recalling information in history. I would still use charisma as his dumb stat as he doesn't have a lot of presence nor is he very charismatic
    Personally I'd probably use point binds instead of standard array but if I had to use standard array I think would be better for his base stats would be:
    15, wisdom
    14, dex
    13, con [ has most of his ability to be unstoppable comes from his armor. I'll just say he's not a tough BAMF, but he has a pretty high armor class is what I'm going off of]
    12, str
    10, int
    8 cha
    And while I'm not super heavy on the alignment system cuz I think it's not used as heavily as people think it is, I would firmly place them in neutral good. As he sees what he does as an act of good for getting rid of goblins. One could even make an argument for chaotic good but I do believe he's a good character at heart He's just not going to go out of his way to help people, unless that problem involves goblins.

I personally consider being able to come up with tricks and strategies on the fly like Goblin Slayer does to be indicative of higher Intelligence, while a lower Wisdom could be because of a less than stable mental state. Each score in 5e really seems to encompass many different things, usually related very loosely to each other.
      As for the alignment, I've actually dropped it completely from my videos, because I've decided that a rigid alignment is ultimately detrimental to roleplay.

      Perception is normally just to see.
      Investigation is more about finding clues to a crime or a 'scene'
      Like figuring out that goblins attacked, how many how many people may have been there.
      But it is up to the dm what they want someone to roll.

      The only thing I hope to offer is a different idea on the subject, I love DND and anime and seeing the two put together is always enjoyable.
      I definitely knew from the beginning of the video that you were going to say that there's a level of ranger because of the favored enemy goblin.
      I agree that and he's mostly a warrior, and wanted to argue that he might be samurai subclass to give him more advantage on attacking, but I think you also made a valid reason for battle master. How does Goblin Slayer use a 9th level Gate Scroll as a Fighter/Ranger? He has no UMD Skill Points (3e-3.5e) or 13 Rogue levels (5e). He also seems to have barbarian rage, boosting his CON, letting him stay alive in a certain fight until it runs out (no spoilers). If he is anything it is likely 13 Rogue (UMD and low HP pool - he gets downed quite quickly)/1 Barbarian (Rage)/1 Ranger (favored enemy etc.)/1 Fighter (armor/shield proficiency) or something to this effect.

    • @tabletopnephilim4633
      @tabletopnephilim4633  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed, how DOES he use such a scroll? And I mean that with both the anime and the lite novel. The thing about Goblin Slayer is that it may have been BASED on DnD, 1st edition specifically from what I've been told because that's what the author originally played, but it's also...NOT DnD. Clearly liberties were taken. As for the build itself, I'll admit I didn't fully know what I was doing since I was still fairly new to DnD as a whole myself. I have considered adding in levels of Barbarian if I ever redid this build. Although I never considered Rogue, but then again I'm actually only just now learning that 5e even HAS rules for using scrolls. And Thief Rogue does work thematically since he was trained by the Goblin Slayer equivalent of Bilbo Baggins. You may be on to something here.

      The anime describes magic scrolls as being able to be used by anyone, even a small child.

      In the Goblin Slayer 'verse, Scrolls are a general item that can be used by any adventurer (I presume) who is literate, and has the relevant INT/WIS stat high enough to permit spell casting. So he can do it that way. Goblin Slayer is presented as a jack of all trades adventurer, so it wouldn't be surprising for him to have proficiencies and feats that weren't part of a specific build.

      DamagedRoses Well, in the anime there are 10 ranks for adventurers ranking from Porcelain to Platinum. He’s a silver rank, which is rank 8 out of 10. So from a strictly objective standpoint, he should be around level 15-17.

      Let's also remember he's walking around 1 shotting every Goblin that crosses his path. Outside of a handful of high damage builds, you aren't seeing that kind of damage consistently until much higher level.

      @@JasmineCooper_ 10 ranks doesn't mean we should divide by 10 tough, plat is only 18 -20, but i think gold goes from 13-17, and silver 7-12, all other ranks are just a single level with the lesser one being lvl 1and a half. Climbing low ranks is easy, but climbing higer gets constantly harder, i depict GS around low silver, cause higher silvers at the end are literally OS champions, same goes for the rest of the party except for the cleric girl whose rank at the end of the series I don't remember.

      Mauro Turati Yeah... But you do realize that the XP requirements to level up ALSO gets constantly higher and therefore harder? So that’s already incorporated? What makes you think that you need a variable number of levels per rank when the XP needed to gain a level increases? I don’t see why that needs to be a thing. Especially since he’s only killing goblins, meeting the XP requirements for such a level is no small feat by any stretch of the imagination.
