    Wow, I did not expect this. What an amazing surprise!! Thanks so much for the feature, I can't wait to finish watching the video. As for what you mentioned at the start, yes I am indeed the server owner of the Mario maker 2 puzzle community discord server. We have quite a bunch of Sudoku fans over there as well. It is very cool to see the overlap in communities. Anyways, thanks again for the feature, it is really special to me!!

      You should make an "Escape the Mansion" sudoku. You make a path and when you land on a circled digit then it tells you something about a previous digit which helps you continue the path. I don't know how hard that is but it would be interesting.

      That was a marvelous puzzle. I like a nice sparse grid. Puzzle was also very approachable. It looked like Simon was quite enjoying himself. Two of his favorite things clever logic and coloring. If you would have put a three in the corner, he would have smiled broad enough to make the Cheshire Cat envious. If this is an example of your setting skills, I will look forward to seeing more puzzles.

    It is not me solving the puzzle. It is you solving it. I can go do this on my own. But you have the gift of people skills and a kind mindfulness that is rare, but only now. The interweb is truly a thing of beauty. It pulls like a magnet once you start it. Community whenever you look. I like the words you use and the poems you remember. That is unique for a specific reason.

    It's been said before, but I think it bears repeating. Colours are useful placeholders for UNKNOWN digits. Once the digit the colour represents becomes known, the colour has served it's purpose and can be removed from the grid.
    This removes clutter from the grid; makes the remaining sudoku scanning more like regular sudoku scanning that you're used to; and reduces the amount of further mark-up required - you're not having to wastefully enter both a digit AND a colour on each cell, with the additional mode switching this entails.
    It would have saved you time; perhaps enough so you wouldn't have been late for your Zoom meeting. 😂

    This sudoku reminds me a lot of another sudoku which I think was called ‘Moles’. The idea of digits tunnelling to continue on from each other in order to force their values is extremely satisfying. Great debut puzzle, thanks Rubenscube and Simon for the video (glad you made it to the end in time, it was a lovely solve). Knights moves can be notoriously difficult to spot but they do make for some fun solve paths.

    Simon, I know you ask occasionally on what types of videos you should do, long or short? I just thought of something. Since the weather has been nicer, I have had less of an attention span on sudoku. During the winter I cry when it's not an hour long. lol. So maybe during summertime make them short and sweet and wintertime when everyone is stuck inside do longer puzzles. Anyway, just a thought. LOVE YOU SIMON!

  • @bobblebardsley
    @bobblebardsley 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well this took me 64:06 and I almost gave up near the start (luckily when I reopened the tab it still had my progress). I started with the colouring then realised I wasn't sure the digits on the palindrome (well half of it) were all different, gave up, closed the tab, then immediately spotted that the knight's move etc means they ARE all different, went back and slogged through the rest of the logic. Really nice, I like knight's move puzzles a lot and I was quite proud of being able to see that it was all going to force the thermos somehow, so just working towards that and focusing on when I got a colour to land on a thermo. Bit of mutually exclusive knight's move shenanigans in the tidy-up phase and a lot of scanning the grid for weak cells. Nice way to spend an hour.

  • @Jesthers
    @Jesthers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Got this one done in 230 minutes (I think that's what the timer means, anyway). Honestly incredible how little the thermo and palindrome actually help after you solve them. Was stuck on a lot of 6-8 pairs all over the place that never seemed close enough to solve using knight's move or sudoku. I suppose that's the "quantum" part of the puzzle? A lot of this puzzle seemed to solve after finding the 1s and 2s, it seemed, but 6s and 8s were nigh on impossible until the final few minutes of the puzzle for me.

    Palindromes, knights move that forces coloring.. 4/5. Those are the most satisfying. 35 minutes says it is not. 1 hour 30 minutes is worth a movie.
    There where a couple of puzzles in the past. One stood out in particular. Where the first 2 top digits in the cages showed 32 or 41 for example (read from left to right) pointing out the cage total. With a knights move. You had to find the 158 in box 9 at the end (was it 158?) to place a couple of 2s in the puzzle before the coloring could continue so as to solve the puzzle. Two years back maybe? I will never forget that one. 17 out of 10.
    Renban and German wishpers are reaching sandwich levels now.

    I somehow mis-scanned and filled in the 13 pair in box 1 when it was not yet clear how to fill it in, and filled it wrongly. That gave me ~ 20 minutes later an unfillable cell (a 28 pair in box 9 which could be neither 2 nor 8). I had to watch Simon's solve until I got something different so I then knew how much to rewind my solve. Took in total 167:30.

  • @DarrenNakamura
    @DarrenNakamura 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Got it in 42:34. I had some great progress by about five minutes in, where I had all of the thermos filled by that point. The rest took me a bit longer!

  • @davidh.4944
    @davidh.4944 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got through the break-in, and was busy filling out the rest of the grid, but I must have gotten my wires crossed somewhere, because near the end I hit duplicated digits.
    I tried rewinding a ways to sort it out, but it happened again. So after close to an hour's work, I threw in the towel. I don't have the energy to re-start right now, so I'll just have to be content with the knowlege that I could have solved it if I wanted to.

    Serious issue for me: I've occasionally "solved" a knight's-move puzzle only to discover to my dismay that I've violated the constraint. Is it possible to set up the software to check for knight's-move collisions?
    3:48 -- I'm stumped at this point. It seems as if I have to force a certain palindrome number (my blue) onto the middle thermo, and another palindrome number (my purple) onto the bulb of the left thermo. But I can't see how.
    5:40 -- Thank's for the heads-up with the orange (the middle cell) and the tactic. I've done all the thermos, and all but the two middle cells of the palindrome.
    7:30 -- Now look at the middle cell of the left block, at the kink of the palindrome. Does it go at the end or beginning of a thermo?
    21:00 -- Thank you for eliminating the 9 from that cell for me.
    The END -- I finished it after a long time, before watching the last part. Nice to see the same solution, that I didn't miss any knight's moves. Those "two middle cells of the palindrome" were the 68 pair that took forever to disambiguate.

      It’s certainly possible, but the problem is that once that happens, people are inevitably going to start asking for more and more rule checkers, and it’s going to be way too burdensome to both build all of them and also build a way of indicating which checkers the puzzle should use.

    51m38s for me, yikes. I really loved the interplay of all the palindrome digits, and I did great at colouring the various cells and tracing the implications through the puzzle, but what I completely failed at was connecting the given digits with the colours and narrowing down what could be what. (e.g. Simon's logic that determined what number yellow is). Soooo instead I pencil-marked the entire grid, which got very messy and slow. Oh well, maybe I'll be quicker to figure out what logic to use next time!
    (This is bringing back my abysmal university math performance... I was always getting stuck about what approach to use on any given problem!)

    The very cool initial logic (from 4:39 to 9:22) is an application of *Apiyo-Thoen's* theorem:
    _In any _*_anti-knight_*_ sudoku, if the center cells of any two diagonally-adjacent 3x3 boxes have the same digit, you can force that digit into 2 more cells, then 4 dominos, then 1 more cell._
    See CTC video *A new sudoku theorem* (th-cam.com/video/yT3Fqt8MQUc/w-d-xo.html), featuring an astonishing puzzle by *Aad van de Wetering,* in which the above mentioned theorem was showcased. Aad called that puzzle *Theorema van Thoen* which presumably means *Thoen's theorem.*
    However, that was not a new theorem, as it was first implemented by *apiyo* in a mind-blowing puzzle featured on CTC about 17 months earlier, on Oct 19, 2020: th-cam.com/video/Donhjrl-V1g/w-d-xo.html
    So, it would not be fair to call it *Thoen's theorem.* It should be called either *Apiyo's* theorem or *Apiyo-Thoen's* theorem.

    Hello, I tried the puzzle myself ang got the "looks good to me" finishing sign even the knight's rule has not been met (first I was thinking that the puzzle don't have a unique solution, but I overlooked some of the knight's rules and got the correct finishing sign, later on I discovered my mistakes with the help of your video) Is it something I need to count with when trying other puzzles, that it checks only normal sudoku rules, or it is some error?

    • @RichSmith77
      @RichSmith77 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the check function doesn't check against an actual solution. It only checks basic sudoku rules, so no repeated digits in rows, columns or boxes (and even then, it doesn't always seem to check those correctly, depending on the puzzle).
      If you use the menu option in the top left, and select 'home', it takes you to a CtC home page with some controls documented for the software. It does tell you on this page that the check button only checks basic sudoku rules and "may not work on non sudoku grids or special constraints". There's not much "may" about it. It doesn't. But few people who use the software have probably read this line, so it's a shame the button doesn't do what people naturally expect it to do. Not helped by the fact Simon always reacts to the confirmation it gives as a confirmation his solution is correct.

    I really don't understand why you would flash all those colors. If you simply define it as possible locations in the box, it simplifies the colors. If there is 1 in the box: that's it. If there are multiple, it is one of those. No need for a flash.

    • @RichSmith77
      @RichSmith77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I find a grey flash on a colour is very helpful.
      Simon used to put solid colours in for all possible locations of a colour in a box, but it's too easy to mistakenly scan a single solid colour cell thinking it's the only place for the colour in a box when it isn't.
      Mark was the first to start using grey flashes for this purpose. Several commenters on Simon's videos used to encourage Simon to adopt the same practice. I think it helps to distinguish the different meanings: solid colour = this cell IS this colour,
      flashed colour = this is one place this colour could go (equivalent to a corner pencil mark).

      Regular sudoku + knights move means the 1 in the domino at the end of row 4 (box 6) rules a 1 out of the domino at the end of row 3 (box 3), whichever way round the 1 goes. One cell will be in the same column, the other will be a knights move away.

    • @rubens_cube
      @rubens_cube 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you put 9 in r2c8 it will see r4c8 by Sudoku and r4c9 by the knight's move. If you put 9 in r2c9 it will see r4c8 by the knight's move and r4c9 by Sudoku. Therefore 9 can't be in r2c8 or r2c9. Dominos that align like this are a commonly useful pattern in anti-knight Sudoku.
