Michael Jordan 1985 Playoffs: Gm 3 Vs. Bucks, 35pts (RARE)

  • And so began MJ's legacy as the greatest playoff performer there ever will be, which, of course, is the main reason why he is the greatest there ever will be. Although we had already seen MJ perform his miracles on the college and Olympic level, this was MJ's first great NBA playoff game - a game in which he dominated by balancing the fine line between individual aggressiveness and team chemistry.
    MJ mixed up intense attacks to the rim while doing all of the dirty work - setting hard screens, flying for loose balls, cutting and creating for his teammates, making all the right passes, playing non-stop, hard defense and doubling everything in the clutch. With the game tied with a great Bucks team, rookie MJ took over in the last 7 minutes with 13 of his 35 points and ruthless defense to save the Bulls from a sweep and elimination.
    The many layers of MJ's greatness in their early stages were all here. But most importantly, the ability to raise his game when it absolutely had to be raised was on full display. And, it was rewarded with MJ's first game-winner in the real season - a harbinger of the enormous and impossible achievements he would attain in the years to come.
    (Apologies for the video problems. The stats I counted myself so I may have missed a number here and there.)

    People don't understand just how great those early to mid 80's Milwaukee team's we're. This is the same team that swept a 60 Win Boston Celtics team wit 4 HOF player's on it in the playoffs in 83' So it took an amazing effort from Jordan just to get them a game...Because Milwaukee was really, really good.

      @@NewPatek_ Bucks were a 59 win team that anchored the 2nd best defense in the league and the best perimeter defense with Pressey and Moncrief who constantly doubled MJ. Bulls were an atrocious team with a rookie Jordan.

    Look at the compusure he had as a rookie! Unbelievable! Noone even comes close today, people talk about Kobe like he is even close to Jordan, look how bad Kobe was when he first entered the league. What a joke! Even now he doesnt even have this much composure as Jordan did in 85!

    Could you imagine Jordan coming up today, with all the vertical leap training and speed/quickness conditioning? He'd be even MORE athletic than he was, as hard as that is to believe. He's already, without the aid of advanced supplements/training, more athletic than anyone playing today.

    did you see how the defender wouldnt even guard jordan closer than 18 feet from the bucket...thats why mj is the greatest player of all time, for him to be able to transition his game and make opponents fear that jump shot while still making his daring forays to the basket as time goes on...there will never be another michael jordan

    Agree to a degree, I think he's MVP 88 yr was the best year. He covered all aspects of a complete intense NBA player. NBA defensive player of the year, scoring title and MVP. I don't believe anyone to date has done that.

    For a rookie to deliver this kind of numbers in a playoff is mindblowing, An all around performance offensively and defensively, cant come up with anyone capable of doing this.

    totally agree with you det.
    I would say almost all the jordan's action hoop put in this clips are highlight material. i mean who else has as many beautiful plays in one single game?
    and i never get tired of seeing him split the defense.
    the move at 2:42, i think the reason why the guy who guarded him stand so far behind was because how good jordan was penatrating to the basket.really if it is for today some so called great shooters will settle for a jump shot with the open space like that.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Yes, players have gotten quicker somewhat, but Jordan would be the standard even in today's league. Watch the video and ask yourself who exhibits that sort of explosiveness -- only Wade and possibly Arenas, and Jordan has 2-3" on them. And by explosiveness, I mean acceleration, first step etc. Guys like Carter, Kobe, Lebron, and Tmac just don't compare (and have never compared).

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That big white center is slow, but that's about it. Jordan just made guys LOOK slow, much like Wade does today. Look at the plays I noted and see Wade-like quickness. You're telling me that Wade doesn't make guys look like they're bolted to the floor today? He certainly does. Jordan's acceleration and point-A-to-point B speed is something that can be seen and measured, and it's superior to anyone above 6'4" playing today.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    He was a blur up the court at 2:34. Look how unbelievably quickly he turns the corner and gets to the basket at 2:57 -- it makes me laugh when people don't understand the raw speed and quickness Jordan had. And my favorite move of the video, the EXPLOSION to the basket at 3:09, where he just changes gears and accelerates. No one else I've ever seen has that sort of explosion off the dribble. Look at how quick his first and second step are after he starts that move. Unreal. (continued)

    Look how high he leaps to catch the lob at 1:00, then bumps off the opposing center and goes up strong for the jam. Dude was a beast. Love the lean-in on the dunk at 1:07, which was in Hoops' Artistry video. Look how he palms the ball at 1:34 and the quick hands and anticipation at 2:09. (continued)

    What an incredibly rare game filled with spectacular plays. Shame about the slow-mo video at times, because it obscures Jordan's BLINDING speed, which is still evident despite the video problems. The move(s) he strings together on the drive at the 47-51 second mark is just unbelievable; probably one of the greatest plays I've ever seen. He goes around literally 4 defenders. (continued)

    (continued) Also his FG%. If he was 13-20 in this game, then that means he shot 36.2% in the other three games, which is entirely inconsistent with how he shot during the season and next season/playoffs. Sid Moncrief was an all-time great defender, obviously (and Pressey was great, too), but not to hold a young MJ to 36%. Maybe I'll buy this entire series on DVD and count it up myself. :P

    I had this game taped off of SportsVision back in the day. Wes Matthews got ejected for disputing a bs foul call. He sprinted to the other end of the court to avoid having the ref hear him voicing his displeasure and the ref gave him two technicals about 10 seconds apart. They interviewed him right after the game.

    I ould've loved to see the push at 3:47 up the court at full speed. You can tell it's just insane speed, even with the slowdown. The sick lefty push-shot at 4:10 around 3 defenders. And of course the game-winner with sick elevation at the end of a game where he had given his all on both ends.

    What's really interesting to me is not how impressive Jordan was, but how unathletic and slow the other players are. Look at how clunky the 80's and 70's guys move, and compare them with today's players. Jordan was ahead of his time in terms of athleticism.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Incidentally, I'd love to see the other games from this series, because I'mw ondering if basketball-referenceDOT-COM's playoff stats for Jordan for this series are wrong. They have him with 4 blocks total for the series, so if he had 3 this game, that means he only had 1 combined for the other 3 games, which I find hard to believe with how active he was. (continued)
