  • As our renovations on Hat Trick continue, Tim looks into some alternative materials to replace the rotten plywood throughout the boat. Enter EKOply. Made from 100% recycled plastics, this material is a game changer for our refit.

Would be really interesting to see the end result and a review after real life use, presuming you go ahead with it.
Funnily in this video I keep thinking of solutions to your problems then in the next breath you mention exactly what I am thinking haha.

A couple of episodes from now will be my first practical use of it, was interesting to see what working with it is like and what the end result was

A very nice set of tests Tim 👍Normally I'm a strong supporter of using real wood however this is absolutely a case where it is simply not the best (or environmental) solution. About the only thing that you didn't seem to test was extreme freezing but based on the lack of weight change after a week submerged i'd say that isn't an issue as the water/oil etc obviously never penetrated. I was going to suggest using ground up milk bottles (HDPE) to smooth and seal the edges but looking at the results from the filler that's better and a lot less hassle to apply.
I've never looked at EKOply (but I will now). That looks like a very handy material to know about.

Real wood is so much nicer to look at when you install but even ignoring the cost every time I do something with wood it just deteriorates and ends up looking awful.
This product is also called stormboard sometimes, same product different brand so might show up as that in other countries

Never seen this stuff following with interest, I bought some Chinese boat deck covering from Amazon ,whilst I wouldn’t use it outside it would be perfect for below deck on top of your eco board. It has the appearance of the current flooring and is self adhesive.
Would be comfortable under foot to.

I use a similar cheap fake teak when I do the first project with this stuff, should be out in a couple of weeks.
Looks great but I am concerned on the longevity of it, only time will tell I guess

I'd be more concerned with water getting in often enough to rot the floorboards.

I used to work for a timber import business in London and my job to test marine grade plywood. I used to cut up samples and boil them in a pressure cooker for eighteen hours , then pull the sample’s apart to see how well they held up , some were good but others were terrible, 40 years ago . 👍🦘

That would have been a good test. Being plastic anything where extreme heat would be possible is probably a concern as it could melt.
I am installing a diesel heater on the boat at the moment and went back to ply for the mountings for that as was concerned about heat.
