- On June 21, 1973 President Richard Nixon and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev signed two agreements: "The Scientific and Technical Cooperation in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy" and "The Basic Principles of Negotiations on the Further Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms."

This was one of those moments when leaders did great things.
It is a shame Nixon got caught up in the cover up that stupid Watergate break in that Hunt and Liddy cooked up as he had done a lot o things to reduce tension between the East and West.

He needed to wait longer. Poison doesn't always work that quickly.
The theory of poisoning fails here, since both leaders had a very cordial rapport.

Great clip. Nixon was a cold warrior, but came to believe in stability and the status quo between the superpowers. He was no Reagan, advocated for freedom in the USSR, Nixon was a realist who felt simply matching/checking Soviet power was enough. Which probably was a good philosophy, given how badly things went for Russia in the 1990s.

Brezhnev and Nixon got along pretty well, there was some thawing of the Cold War during their tenure. Carter was too weak, first term Reagan was too aggressive, second term got things moving in the right direction.

I think the cold war the best era for mankind, two competitors racing each other in science, technology, finance, army and trying to show the best of themselves - maybe even in standard of living of their citizen. The show-windows were West and East Germany. Positive consequences can be seen until nowadays: GPS, electronic debit cards, Internet, email, cell/mobile phones, supersonic planes, digital photography...
Right, without competitions, world would be only rock, dirt, and trees. cars, planes, highways, engineering, radio was also came from world wars

The Cold War has a period of great depression at least in the communist bloc given that the arms race between the two great nations only hit the regular people and their lifestyles. Basically in the Soviet Union regular people got poor portal because the government kept spending on in the military instead of social needs

There were moments such as this, and subsequently when Gorby was in power when the USA and the Soviet Union might have forged a lasting peace and cooperation. But then, because of ideological, cultural and historical differences, plus changes in administrations, the good feeling doesn't last and the two sides revert back to the usual hostility and mistrust.
Thats one point both countries left out tensions a military race aside to summit.

I noticed the same thing. I honestly don’t know. I’m guessing it is something to preserve the signature. Perhaps something to either dry the ink or absorb excessive ink?
I believe that if Richard Nixon could have been a 3 or 4-terms President, South Vietnam would still be in the world maps and a comprehensive Peace would reign in the Middle East. A man of war, a man of peace. A great man.

Nixon was almost finished signing but didn’t want it to appear that way (he wanted to finish at the same time). You can see that Nixon signs his first name then peeks at Brezhnev to see how far along he’s gotten and then starts to write his last name. That’s when Brezhnev notices and pretends to peek over at Nixon’s paper as if copying his homework. Really funny moment In a somewhat tense political time
Why was Nixon looking at Brezhnev while he was signing the agreement? Was he doing that just to be funny? Or was he actually trying to make sure that Brezhnev signed the agreement correctly even though he has another guy assisting him?
I think it had too look like Nixon was like a schoolboy cheating/checking what his neighbor wrote down. I like this kind of humor, especially consider the difficult time. Brezhnevs turn is with the drinks, insinuating it could be poisoned and/or checking if he got less than Nixon.
@@remy- Yes that makes sense. Nixon did a great job in diplomacy with foreign leaders and also knew when to use humor at just the right moments! Love it!
