Manuela Ometto and da Maurizio Sangineto met within Vicenza RadioStar, in 1976, one of the first free radio stations in Italy. They were soon joined by singer Rolando "Jay Roland" Zaniolo.[1] These three young people, passionate about disco music, decided to form a group that proposed that type of music, with lyrics that referred to values such as friendship, fraternity and love. To improve the sound quality they decided to call keyboardist Toto Torquati from Rome.
In 1979 they released their first single Do it Dancin', recorded at Studio Radius in Milan and owned by Alberto Radius.[1] In 1980 their first album Firefly was released, produced by Maurizio Sangineto himself and by Maurizio Cavalieri on the Mr Disc label. From this album the single Love and Friendship was extracted which brought them to the top of the Italian funky dance music chart. The same song, after being remixed in New York and relaunched under the title of Love Is Gonna Be On Your Side, reached third place in the official US charts in 1981, in the Dance category of Billboard.
Then followed the albums My desire, in 1981, Firefly 3, in 1982, and Double Personality, in 1984.
After a long break, the collection The Best of Firefly was released in 1992.
In 1994 the single Whatcha Gonna Do was released and in 1995 the single Falling In Love, both on Maurizio Sangineto's new Musix label.
After another long break, in 2019, and to celebrate 40 years of activity, the group launched a new version of the first hit Love Is Gonna Be On Your Side, merging it with another great Italian dance hit of the time, The Glow of Love by Change. To refresh the sound, the Miami rapper Rampage Rome was called to collaborate.
In 2021 the group, now formed by Maurizio Sangineto and Jay Roland, releases the new single Fly Like a Firefly.
