    I like this idea. I still have a decent i5 laptop that I no longer use for 'normal' work. The battery is weak, but everything else works fine. Perfect for using as a portable retro emulator.

      Hopefully I can give you a few more ideas once the video is live but you do have a perfect device just sitting there. Thanks for being the first comment and glad the thumbnail, and possibly the big post, piqued your curiosity!

      Thanks for doing this. I am very interested in the Mega65 and I enjoy using emulators for my retro computer hobby.
      I have watched your previous video on setting up the Mega65 emulator on a Chromebook.
      Enjoyed it very much.
      My big question is how to get the ROMs.
      I think the easiest/best/most ethical way is to buy a C64 forever package and patch them.
      But I would prefer if there was a way I could buy them directly from the Mega65 people, that way I would be supporting their project financially, as I am not yet convinced I "need" another computer in the house (the real Mega65).

      Supporting and patching the Cloanto ROMs is the best, and only, way for a user who wants emulation only. I'd not worry about feeling guilty because you don't support the MEGA65 team. As MEGA65 development continues, the price will drop and at some point you may decide to purchase then. It's a great point though. I'm going to start a conversation about ROM purchase only options with the developers.

    Overall an informative video, with a lot of passion & thought put into it. Perhaps a little harsh rhetoric at 2:25 referring to "garbage Windows laptops" - considering that all 8-bit CBM machines ran derivatives of Microsoft Basic … and Jack Tramiel himself realized his vision of making computing affordable (to quote the great man) "for the masses, not the classes"

    • @retroCombs
      @retroCombs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which leads me back to Linux which runs much more efficiently on older tech but what a great observation regarding Microsoft and BASIC. Nice! Thanks for the great feedback.

      @@retroCombs For sure, Linux is great ... VICE with MEGA65 support running on Linux, would be the Holy Grail

    • @retroCombs
      @retroCombs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. XEMU and VICE are available for Linux, so there's that.

    You can use the USB gamepad (and mouse) from the A500mini with your emulation-laptop. I just ordered an extra set for that reason.

    Awesome! thanks for that. Any update when Geos OS can be used on Xemu C65?

    • @retroCombs
      @retroCombs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not yet. It's tricky because you need the MEGA65 Freezer in order to load GEOS and that has not been implemented in XEMU yet.

    I would have thought that the Laptop needs to have the same hardware as the COMMODORE MEGA65.

    Thanks for this video. I'm wondering if you (or any of your followers) can suggest me if and how I can map my laptop keyboard (that hasn't the numpad) to play games through Xemu
    Thanks!

    • @retroCombs
      @retroCombs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there's a configuration file you can change in XEMU to map keys. I think it's keyboard.cfg. It's been a day or two since I modified this file. I also believe someone has a USB joystick working. I'll check in that option.

    I wonder how this would work with an Evolve III, the $60 student Windows 10 netbook from Microcenter.

    • @retroCombs
      @retroCombs  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was reading some reviews and because the device is already underpowered for Windows, I'm sure the experience for the retro software would not be pleasant. Looking online for a used device would probably be a better value.
