He’s talking about the Income Tax Act which requires any citizen who wants to permanently leave the country must pay a departure tax on the value of all of their assets, which means you effectively have to liquidate everything you own before you can leave. It’s a big reason why many Canadians leave when they’re young because you never want to acquire assets in Canada. Canada is nothing but elderly retired government employees served by young East Indian and Pakistani immigrants.

Trudeau government wanted to stop citizens and businesses from leaving to the U.S which started to happen very quickly. Super corrupt PM couldn't have this so inserted his authoritarian hostage loyalty program. But all that did was made them leave faster and forever. The devastation and damage that moron has done to Canada will be felt for years. His same legacy as his father it would seem. The biggest people to blame is anyone that voted for the moron in the first place after his father dumped Canada down the drain before.

Fix the Canadian women. Canadian women need to have more kids(won't need to import immigrants). Canadian women need to be family first, ride or die instead of being incentived to break up their families and decapitalize the man who primarily helped them build it. Broken families result in the need more homes, smaller more divided family units, fewer resources and unity between them. Great for government programs, terrible for society, community, economics and culture.

Canada did not have a tax or restrictions on foreign buyers for many many years. So locals were competing with the richest of the world, and in some cases money launderers turning their funny money into a real asset. People paying cash for homes, no negotiating. Canada’s local officials are naive or easily bought, now it’s beyond repair. I imagine this is also what happened in Sydney.

I’m a Canadian living in a rural part of the east coast. No one can afford to live right now even if you’re making 100k per year you’re barely scraping by and probably in debt going further and further in the hole as time goes by. The interest rates are insane and price of living has never been higher, while wages have stayed basically the same. Small shitty apartments are 2000$+ a month. Houses that are worth 170k are going for 300k+. This government and the debt they’ve accumulated by senseless spending have wrecked our economy. Healthcare system is totally destroyed. Takes a year or more to get in for an MRI. Not to mention they just increased the country’s population by over 2 million in a couple of years by mass migration and government is paying half the foreigners wages and companies are laying off all their Canadian staff to save on paying employees. Canada has fallen….

The damage has been done just like his father. Nobody learns.

I only pray the next government can have some solutions to the cost of living problems. All the best bud.

Canadian here-the most accurate depiction of Canada from a Joe Rogan guest in a long time. Not only are you “trapped” living in Canada as the guest described but any capital gains is so heavily tax that, for some, it’s better to leave your investments in place and borrow from those investments while having to pay for whole life insurance and other tax legal shelters just so you have something left for your family when you eventually die. At this point I’m just waiting it out until Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives are in and form a majority.

There is way to many loop homes and money laundering issues in Canada that is tied to foreign investors cleaning up money. Half of the people I knew who were in 5 million plus properties (yes it's very common) were literally registered as "Students" to evade taxes. Then they would clean money up flipping exotic cars and front businesses. Lol. What a lot of people don't realize is that in BC, firat 500k of your mortgage is set at a certain rate, anything after 500k it jumps exponentially into a higher rate. People take out loans to get the down payments on these properties. It's nuts. And you cannot touch anything for under a million in those areas, average is 3 mill. When I moved back to Ontario, I got into a house during Covid at 310k for a nice single family property. Because of our nutty housing crises, our property went from 310k in 2021, to well over 500k in 2024... If we sell now, we have to pay on over 200k just to flog the house!
Canada has been fucking destroyed in the last 10 yrs. It's absolutely out of control do to foreign investment and loop holes in our immigration system. It's sad really. I think it will be at least 20 yrs before we "recover", if we ever do.

No, they are not mansions, and, no, they are not in cities (no one wants to live in a city), but they're starter homes near family. For many, it's all about priorities. These young folks don't buy new vehicles (they fix the old ones they have), they don't have expensive clothes, and they don't vacation on a beach down south. Their expectations are realistic. They wanted a home, saved and work towards that goal. Two couples now have babies. It's a simple life but a great one. As for the cost of living in BC, it's always been expensive. Same here, in 2017 when the housing market was low for buyers I made a fairly quick decision to downsize into a rural area and purchased land with an inexpensive little house and left a much larger home in the suburbs. I remember at the time so many people thinking we were crazy for "downgrading", but they did not see the big picture at the time, now they sure do! Best decision ever! I have watched my old home resell multiple times since then for double, and triple what I sold it for in under 8years. So glad to be away from all the extra taxes that would have come from owning that larger home. Never been happier in my simple little house with abundant land. I am very fortunate to have miraculously gotten the timing right prior to COVID and everything going down the drain with the economy. I feel for younger folks trying to get into the housing market.

Vancouver cost of real estate has gone hand in hand with Asian investment money into the province. Very few Canadians in any other city would argue with you on your points regarding Vancouver and the rest of BC as they levy additional carbon taxes and provincial taxes that do make living in that province very expensive. BC stands for BRING CASH .

Yeah Canada truly sucks. The biggest driver of gdp is real estate. This has led to insanely unaffordable housing. Unless you want to live far away from everything, an old starting home will cost 400-500k. And that won't be a nice house. Wages have also stagnated and are worth 0.70 to USD and we are taxed heavily. Also the wealth inequality is terrible where most wealth is held by people 40 years old and up. Most young people are already living paycheck to paycheck and have zero chance of financially being independent. I think around 60% of young adults are dependent on their parents financially.

Canadian here, who lived in the U.S. for 20 years (adolescence to late 30’s), and back in Canada since last ten years. A beautiful country that’s been getting ruined by terrible Liberal “leadership” and policies, and where citizens are punished for doing well- taxes are insanely high (espec. in Quebec- 15% sales tax, for eg.), the dollar is in the toilet, and in Quebec the gov. has literal “language racism” laws in place (which they justify by saying they’re trying to preserve the culture)- but people are numbed out by the supposed “hand outs” or “social services”, as they’re called, and seemingly constrained by this weird “must be nice and have to comply”aspect of the culture that appears to be baked in here. Re. the medical system, sure, some good things about it, but try getting a family doctor here, and if you’re so lucky to get one, you’ll wait ages for an appt. (I made one today- soonest available: 2 months from now). And ER waits are crazy long- I’ll spare you the stories.
Montreal is a beautiful and even cool city, but for some reason, the street work and construction appears to be never ending, the detour signs seem designed to lead you nowhere in particular, and the roads remain some of the worst in the world, no joke- feels like you’re driving through a war torn country half the time, like the asphalt has been torn up by bombs and mortars. Just heard the premier (governor) in Quebec is trying to make it illegal to “pray in public”. And I’m not against immigration by any means, but within reason guys- so many new people and not enough housing, and without any intention of necessarily assimilating (except being forced to learn french and to let them turn your kids into French Canadians, again, speaking “in Quebec”- literally no choice but to send their kids to french schools).
Sucks cause it’s a nice place, overall, with mostly very nice people.
    Oh Canada.

Unlike all other countries with the exceptions of Eritrea and Hungary (with caveats), the United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income, even if they are a permanent resident in another country.[12] To deter tax avoidance by abandonment of citizenship, the United States imposes an expatriation tax on high-net-worth and high-income individuals who give up U.S. citizenship. The tax also applies to lawful permanent residents or green-card holders who are considered "long-term residents." The Internal Revenue Code defines a long-term resident as any individual who is a lawful permanent resident of the United States in at least 8 taxable years during the period of 15 taxable years ending with the taxable year during which the expatriation occurs.[13]

I retired early in Canada. I love to travel to other countries but like to come home to Canada. For the clean air and open spaces. But if I was in my 20’s and starting out I’d move to USA or overseas and try to work remotely.Trudeau sucks tho.

Clean air? Bangkok has better air quality than huge swathes of Canada during forest fire season.

Coincidence that the prices started drastically upward exactly when Trudeau came into power in 2015?
