Its cool and shit at the same time, you can buy the blankets for £1 at Poundland, 2 litres of water set you back about 20p or so depending on if you're happy with store brand and those survival block things can be bought on Amazon for a few pounds. Its cool as a time capsule thing but you'd have to be pretty stupid to buy it for a actual emergency situation, you know it must have cost a lot for really no real reason.
I think the bars are similar to pemmican. This was used back before refrigeration for long lasting survival or traveling long distances needing protein. The old timers used tallow, animal fats, berries, nuts, etc, all,mixed up together. Yes lots of fats , I think that’s what preserves it.
If it’s really used for the USCG it should hold up really well ! There may be something in the water to help it survive and that’s what you may be tasting !!
Very stupid to even taste old water packets like those, more so to not warn people not to. While I was in the USAF we had a few pilots drink water packets that had been expired for 3 years. ALL of them had to be flown out and ended up in the hospital. Expired water like that is VERY dangerous, unless you boil and/or treat it.
I can just imagine if you eat 3 of those bars in 1 day, you will be constipated for 3 days by the way it looks. I'm surprised that ,that kit didn't have any tactical toilet paper in it.

You can still buy similar emergency bars to store. The only difference I see is that those have darkened a bit with age, otherwise pretty much the same as what you get now.

Local stores also sell cups of dehydrated water. All you have to do is to rehydrate it with tap or bottled water. Its ingenious! 👍
