- If you were a casual TV viewer in the mid-2000's, odds are you remember the neanderthal-themed Geico commercials which promoted their new website as being "So easy a Caveman can do it!". These ads were so popular that they led to ABC developing a sitcom based on the premise. Join me as I take a look back at this forgotten failure.

It probably would have done better as a series of 10 minute shorts on Adult Swim.
At least they could lean into the absurdity of the premise if it was on Adult Swim.
This would've worked better with extremely absurd and avant garde humor like adult swim is known for.

Flo started out as s stand up comedian when she was offered the job ,It was supposed to be only a couple of commercials!

When they announced they were doing a show off the commercials, I thought, "Cool how the caveman actors are getting a show out of a commercial gig". Then they originally weren't even going to cast any of the original guys. There went my minuscule amount of interest in it.
Maurice, the main caveman from the commercials, was a semi-regular character.
It was actually not bad.

That was my reaction when I first heard about this sitcom, and it turns out I was absolutely correct.
I remember when this show was announced and literally no one was looking forward to it.
@503 Workshop Unlike Arrested Development, Cavemen (then and now) has never been considered to be a good show let alone great like AD. It has a 4.3 on IMDB.
I even remember seeing a commercial where two of those cavemen talked about what a bust the show was. One of them started to say, "Well, at least they never said, 'It's so easy to...'" and the other one was all, "Yeah, yeah..."
ABC: we’ll run anything for half a season. (Remember Manhattan Love Story? Or Selfie? No. Not even the people who acted in them do).
So this is the show that replaced George Lopez on the ABC network. The idea is so horrible, a caveman can do it.
Man. Even when Nick Kroll plays a caveman he plays a d-bag. He really only has that one speed. Amazing.
Kroll sucks in everything he ever did. Makes sense his first TV appearance was a massive failure.

Meh, never really liked him anyway. Dude blatantly ripped off other comedians. Not to say that others don't do that, but I don't think he had an original joke in any of his shows. I actually enjoyed the Cavemen show.

People poke fun at the idea, but there was Dinosaur sitcom in the 90’s. It was pretty successful and tackled a lot of political topics as well. The 90’s were crazy.
Yeah but the different dinosaurs was... Everyone in that show was a dinosaur.
I liked Dinosaurs. The final episode was a real downer, though.
Unlike Cavemen, Dinosaurs was an actual commentary on modern day life and very ahead of its time.

Fun fiction: SNL/Phil Hartman's "Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer" was floundering as a brilliant idea lacking vision from the start. Only when the writers changed the working title from "Ice-Covered Cretaceous Counselor" did inspiration strike.
Yep! I remember that series. It was like internet sensation FRED. Now let's "beat a dead horse" and make a series out of it. Some things are best enjoyed in "small doses" LOL!!!
A few years before this it was Baby Bob. This might have been about the time people got out of the habit of watching prime time sitcoms.
I completely "missed out" on FRED. I only became aware of it from some video about bad movies.
One more fun fact: Stephanie Courtney was on this series too, before landing the roll of Flo in the Progressive ads. By the way, if you've ever dealt with anything car insurance related, ain't nothing funny about the shit.
Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer with the late great Phil Hartman is caveman humor done impeccably. Geico is grating, especially the “We love the new apartment/house. But there’s a [home maintenance pun] issue” bit

Finally, me watching an episode: hmm, I’m glad it’s getting cancelled.
I never got annoyed with them, nor do I think the public got annoyed with them. They had a good run.

I'm 37 yrs old now & not 1 single person I know even remembers this Geico Cavemen commerical spin-off show in the slightest. I was beginning to think it was just a figment of my imagination or something. Thanks Hats Off! It's amazing how something like this can even get made. I can imagine some corporate suits doing a ton of cocaine and repeatedly telling each other that this was a good idea.
I remember sitting in my office all day at work, frequenting the Geico Caveman apartment tour online back then. Most of my life has been a waste.
As a British person, this is all news to me, even the ads. Seems someone saw Alien Nation and thought they'd change it to Cavemen.
Also British - I don’t even know what Geico is, although I was aware of the show as a punchline in gags about short-lived, crappy shows. Have to say it doesn’t look like it was thaaat bad...

Good synopsis.. I kinda remember 'The Mullets' being similar.. It was a brief, funny concept. Not enough for a sustainable series tho.
A lot of ideas can work in a 30 second sketch, but not so many when stretched out to a 30 minute sitcom for dozens of episodes/year.

I remember when this show came out, I had such high hopes for it. Being a fan of The Munsters and The Addams Family, I thought this show would have a similar premise; lovable misfits that don't realize they are unusual, getting along, in their own way, in our modern society. But instead they chose to make the characters unlovable, pretentious jerks. 😒
Exactly. You could root for them. You can't root for these guys. Their caveman makeup is the only thing keeping them from being the typically unbelievable and two-dimensional simp-douche male sitcom characters borne out of misandry in most every other show I detest.
That's what I expected too.
I remember the sit com. I loved the characters. I loved their insider-and-yet-outsider view of society.
I really started to like this show the last 2 or 3 episodes before it was taken off the air.
Loved that show. I put on Caveman Holiday about once a year when serving ribs (sans the scavenger's pie). Long live Longnight!
It was a great show. Had a compelling story line. The jokes weren't hilarious but it was funny enough to keep you engaged.
The only reason why it wasn't successful is because of the sensitive libtard f*ck heads not liking that it was based around them being "minorities"

I actually liked this show. The characters were like people. It was a typical sitcom but with cavemen.
I remember when this was new and actually airing on tv. I just couldn’t believe they actually made a show out of the geico caveman but.
I remember actually getting caught up in the whole "Caveman" thing at the time. I loved the silly commercials and my family and I would laugh like idiots whenever a new one came out. I was actually looking forward to the show and thought it would be on for years. Ha... After around 3 episodes I knew it wasn't going to last long.
Love them or Hate them, those Geico Cavemen are still an iconic part of Television History, lol.
They had a concept that was so punchy, it could work for quick commercials, but when they tried using the concept for a sitcom, it became too racy, and closed in on meta offending minorities by downplaying/parodying the whole trope.
When they eventually realized the problem, they toned down the joke to the point where it was superfluous that these guys were cavemen at all, making the whole sitcom superfluous and disturbing.
Wish they'd done a series on the original version.. Phil Hartman's SNL skit "Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer". "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury... I'm just a simple Caveman".
I doubt Phil would have agreed to do a weekly series where he had to go through such make up. And getting anyone to take over the role would have made it an automatic failure.
It wasn't forgotten.. the horrible memories were just surpressed.

I remember this. This deserved a double face-palm and head shake. Also, what is with Geico's RELENTLESS advertising. Now every commercial is "the house is great, it just has a [enter not funny pun here] problem".
It actually looked better before they retooled it, atleast it had a unique premise that made sense. The idea of the main guy accidentally falling Into stereotypical caveman scenarios while trying to impress the father actually seemed well executed for what it was.
It did. There was definitely something there. Maybe not enough to sustain a long-running sitcom but something to suggest somebody put at least an ounce of thought into this premise. But that whole "less offensive mascots" conversation from the retooled episode...you could hear the crickets.
I see wasted potential everytime the cavemen declare “i’m offended” and the characters seem to placate them. Doing the opposite would’ve been very spicy AND interesting.

Unfortunately like so many things I wish I could forget this is one of those things that I remember due to it's absolute hatred by the public.
Take a concept beat it into the ground and then try to turn it into a sitcom. Absolutely flawless logic.

It's not a bad idea exactly. But by 2007, off-the-wall sitcom concepts weren't popular at all. This sort of idea would have held more water in the 80s along shows like Alf or Small Wonder.

That footage you showed was when Spike Feresten dressed up as them wreaking havoc to try to give bad press to the show. It was pretty funny.

Also this wasn’t the only advertisement based show, there was also The California Raisins Show that lasted 13 episodes.
I remember that show, and I remember being disappointed when it wasn't done in Claymation like the commercials and TV specials were.

Ive watched different reviews and watched several episodes and I thought they really did try and develop the characters and the world they inhabited. There was one episode about their own holiday called 'Long Night' celebrating a time when their cavemen ancestors survived a extremely cold night once long ago. It seemed like a cross between Thanksgiving and the story behind Hanukkah. Another episode One of the guys was volunteering as a big brother to a cavekid that was adopted by a white couple, he took the kid with when he went to play a caveman gamboling game that was like a cross between dice and dominoes, it was called Wolf Tooth or some shit I can't remember, it was trying to sound like 'rolling bones' which is the slang for dominos. I watched those episodes like 2 years ago or so. I watched like 4 or 5 episodes and it seemed like they were really trying their best at making a good show despite the hurdles they had to jump. I dare anyone to go watch with an open mind and you will be impressed with what they did with a show that the majority of people dismissed it before watching one minute of it. They took a ridiculous premise based off a commercial and tried to make a successful sitcom from it, and if I were to give it a grade It the show would be B- and effort would get a A-.

OMG, I dug this series back in the day. It was the oldest recording on that DVR for years. I would go back and rewatch those episodes constantly!

we had an ad campaign like that here in Sweden. There was so many ads all day long that after christmas when the ads stopped the guy for the company had to comme out publicly and appologuise for his campaign, it backfired hard. the company name was SIBA if you wanna research.

I genuinely enjoyed this show. I thought the actors did a great job & found the writing to be funny. It was born out of a very "Studio" idea, but I thought the writers did a good job with the premise they were given. It was one of your standard aughts sitcom tropes: couple of roommates who are completely different and get in silly situations.
Well said. I never thought I'd watch this series, but I just watched all episodes and wish there were more. I just said in another post that the best time to start this series was right after the first popular commercial (one of my all time favorites). The commercials after the first one made me feel like the series wouldn't been that great.

Homo sapiens (man) and Neanderthals were contemporaries, man didn’t evolve from Neanderthals (though there was some cross breeding). “Cave man” and neanderthal are not interchangeable terms, was there clarity on this in the show? I wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t. Anyway just a bit of anthropology for the road

I think this is one of those moments where where you think your idea is super cool an innovative, but a second or third opinion helps you realize it's actually not good at all. Like I'm sure they thought they were doing something really clever with the prejudice thing, but it comes off as tone deaf. On the flip side though, taking away the prejudice theme leaves you with a show that's about nothing. It really only worked in small doses.
You should do a Forgotten Failures episode on the Boris and Natasha movie from 1992.

That film has not been forgotten nor did it fail. It was literally made by one of the most popular directors in the history of film. If you want a video essay on it I'm sure there are plenty on youtube.

I liked the show. I remember it coming out. I had just gotten out of the military and I was listening to the radio. They were talking about it. So I went and watched it. I thought it was really good. I found out later it got cancelled. TV show companies should give shows a while to catch on. Some time you need 2 seasons.
I feel in some weird reality, that's could have worked. I loved the Geico Caveman commercials because the cavemen were all depicted as wealthy, cultured bachelors that delt with society's condescending stereotype that caveman are primitive and stupid. I feel like if the characters were played more likable, the dialog could have been wittier, and the racial injustice stuff could have been more of a parody rather than being played straight like in the commercials, it could have worked okay.
My friends and I saw ourselves in those characters.

@@Targisvear No. We actually each matched a personality of the characters. I was Nick Kroll's character. Maurice was so much like my pal Eric. We had two buds who were very much like the nerdy one and the tool one.

Disney + has the potential to preserve Disney's biggest failures so that they won't be forgotten and people can learn from them as cautionary tales. Now if only they could also get Dragon Ball Evolution, one of Fox's biggest failures, and Super Mario Bros., one of Hollywood Pictures' biggest failures, on there.
There would be a trigger warning for unfrozen cave people.
If Phil Lord and Chris Miller worked on this it would have been good.
