@@carlosg8716 I live in Costa Rica as well but there are some nasty road conditions such as the landslide that happened between San Isidro and Dominical (in southern zone) among many others like 1 or 2 years ago there were several other crucial routes closed because the road had washed away or was blocked by landslides

This was a great overall introductory video on trucking in Egypt, but think that there was so much more that you could've covered. From the wildly decorated trucks to the significant number of fatalities recorded on Egyptian roads. There has been an increasing number of drivers consuming different drugs to fight off fatigue during the long desert drives, which results in pretty severe road accidents and deaths. The Suez Canal and some pretty important ports could be worth checking out as well. However, I understand that a lot of this stuff isn't wildly available in English so I appreciate the effort regardless. Cheers
The untied states has strict standards and testing to prevent truck drivers using stimulants drugs to stay awake.
Not only is A lot of this stuff not available in English but in Arabic too. As an Egyptian I can say that despite being a heavily bureaucratic country it’s terrible at record keeping.

@@limjaheybobandy you would be mistaken. what you may see as a horrendus mega project (the new administrative capital) is actually a work of art, no.1 its being built using as little money as possible with the best outcome possible. The army is very very very very organized (i served there for 5 years). And where i live (5th settlement) there are highways being built. and the monorail is being built too. the monorail is being built along street 90 (busiest highway) and the highways are being built along the busiest work routes. it sounds like chaos, but being able to even get STARTED with these two projects requires a very high level of organization.
@@masao2922 thank you for your input. There's no denying that they've been able to build these things very quickly and efficiently. Any similar project where I live (Canada) would have taken 20 years easily. What I meant with my previous comment was concerning administration services, keeping records, etc. Public services are very understaffed and underfunded, and everything is just chaotic. Again, maybe that's just my experience and that it will change with the new capital, but the infrastructure they're building doesn't seem to match how Egypt has managed its services (even tourism) in the past

I had a neighbour in Poland that sold x3 used old Actroses with used trailers and after a week 3 middleeasterns came to him to take the trucks drive them to turkey and then ship it to egypt

The Iveco at 2:56 is a former truck from the Italian company Arcese and the V8 Actros next to it from the German company Bentrup.
They love an Actros. They'll paint the word Actros on any truck no matter the model. Old Iveco, new izusu, ancient Navara, three wheeled motorcycle, they'll paint Actros across all of them

I'm an Egyptian and I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that this truck is still grinding out here some where.
I just travelled through Egypt last week and I noticed how lots of trucks were decorated with pretty murals and drawings and the likes. And at night, many of them lit up in lots of different colors. That's something that you don't really get in the West.
Hey was surprised to see you post about egypt, however I think you completely brushed over one of the most important aspects of Egyptian trucking: the suez canal, port said and alexandria, where the countries biggest ports/cargo flow are located. Also, trucking in the New Valley governorate (the area you pointed at in the desert) is insignificant compared to the rest of the country. Along the red sea there is also a lot of trucking as there are multiple petrochemical companies owing to Egypt's petroleum industry. Otherwise it was a good quick overview, though a quick touch on safety and use of stimulants by some drivers could have been something to add, as well as the decoration of trucks with paint, lights and text.

It's underrated until a row of trucks randomly comes from no where at 3 AM making any trip after midnight a gamble for your life... after 12 AM it's trucker haven, and those truckers don't give a shit about road safety (a lot often under the influence of drugs), although nice video, highlights some of the traffic problems in Egypt, love from Egypt
Thanks for the video on my home country, always love seeing Egypt being highlighted. Just a couple notes, on mistakes you made and things you left out.
Firstly, the New Cairo City you panned over to on the map isn't actually the New Administrative Capital being built right now, that lies further east. New Cairo is one of the many satelites of Cairo built to house the growing population (along with 6th of October city and 10th of Ramadan city for example). These satelite expansions mostly house upper and middle class homes, but don't actually do much to alleviate the congestion of Cairo, since they don't offer many homes for Cairo's less well-off citizens.
Secondly, as pointed out by another commenter you missed a lot about the decoration of trucks and trucking culture in Egypt. It's quite similar to Indian trucking from what I've understood from your video on that topic, Truckers are really attached to their trucks and often do their best to decorate them. Not to the same extent as in India from my experience, but Egyptian trucks can get pretty extravagant. They often have prayers and various Muslim symbolisms hanging in the cab, along with trinkets to ward off the evil eye.
Egyptian driving culture should also have been mentioned when congestion in Cairo was brought up. In Egypt the driving style is very much first come, first serve, almost wrestling with your car to try and get your spot. Where you should drive 3 lanes according to the road markings, Egyptians will drive 4. Car and truck horns are also used liberally to hassle other drivers around you, leading to a very busy driving environment.
Another commenter brought up the use of stimulants being used by truckers. this is a topic I'm not very aware of, but probably ought to be looked in to. I do know that there are drive-through shisha and tea places where they will hang a hookah pipe on the window of a car/truck for the driver to enjoy without them having to get out of their vehicle.
Lastly, I think the desert communities such as Bahareya and Siwa which rely for the majority on trucking for their sustenance ought to have been highlighted. Same for the importance of Port Suez as the main shipping port of Egypt, and the work Egyptian truckers do in getting goods inland. Egypt does not have a very active freight train network, and mostly relies on poorly trained truckers to handle cargo logistics. Only last year were there calls to expand Egypt's freight train network, but seeing how slow Egyptian bureaucracy is we will probably still be reliant on trucks for a long time to come.
All that said, I still enjoyed the video, but I hope you make another one where you might highlight the details you missed in this one.

I'm in Egypt now and the biggest thing with trucking is massive overloading.
I've seen trucks with 40t on a semi trailer. With bags of plastic rubbish 4m wide across the truck. With scrap steel rebar flapping in the wind a meter from the truck.
Then there's the lights. White lights on the back, red lights on the front, indicators to take bends, only parking lights at night, hi beams all the time, morse code through hazards, green, purple, pink, string lights, All in every combination a bored trucker can think of to make their truck less safe.
And maybe most spectacular, the living conditions. These trucks don't have sleepers. They pull very slightly off the road, often half blocking the outside lane. Open up the kitchen in the trailer side box, on the traffic side for some bizarre reason, then sleep on a carpet under the cab. You'll often see a truck driver and his apprentice bent over doing their sunrises in the outside lane.
I really wanna know about Chinese trucking. They make like everything and its gotta get from the factories to the boats somehow, plus theres massive cities and massive stretches of nothing across the Tibetan plateau and Gobi desert

On a side note, the new Cairo city centre isn't really meant for solving the traffic congestion. The motivation of the government has been explained pretty well by Johnny Harris.
Funnily enough the New Cairo City Yukon showed here was actually built to alleviate congestion/as a real estate development, the New Administrative Capital indeed is not.

I actually returned from Egypt last week. In Cairo, there are endless mini-trucks such as the Toyota Hilux with a small box body on the back. In rural areas, there are endless amounts of Mercedes-Benz SK trucks, some MAN, Scanias, some locally produced trucks. Cairo is a perpetual parking lot- the roads are almost always packed full of cars, with lots of honking. Rural roads are total lawlessness, no speed limits enforced, no lane markings, poor sanitation. I don't know how they deal with the stress, the poor conditions and not to mention corruption.
Toyota is number 1 in Egypt we love this car, especially with a turbo 70% of Toyota we add a turbo on them

Regarding trucks in Egypt, I think you covered many good points. As for the new capital, the corrupt government is wasting huge amounts of money on construction projects, cities, new road networks, bridges, etc... The government says that this is for the sake of the people and in order to solve the problems of population overcrowding and traffic congestion. This is not true, the new cities are very expensive, and they belong to the elite and the senior corrupt leaders in the government. Not only were these projects and roads unhelpful, they were also implemented incorrectly and a lot of money was embezzled.While it is being completed, Egypt is now suffering from the global economic crisis doubly because of the mismanagement of the corrupt coup government

As a Swede I have to recommend a video on Swedish trucking. We have a lot of interesting aspects to explore, such as our sparsely populated and cold north, the frequent use of ferries to get from Sweden to Denmark, Germany or Finland, our domestic truck production with both Volvo and Scania being based here and of course the EU wide phenomena of more and more trucking jobs going to the relatively poorer parts of the union.
exquisite video. there are a lot of good aspects of egyptian trucking, and in really really remote villages there are wide roads made specifically for trucks. however there are some shortcomings.
first and foremost, the media has been increasingly forthcoming on truck-related fatalities.
secondly, more and more truck drivers are starting to get apprehended for driving unlincensed and drug use.

there is not that much of a difference. Sure they use other trucks as a base but for the rest it is very similar.

You should check Indonesian trucking, as my granpa are actually a long range truckers from Jakarta to Medan in 1970s to 90s. It's really wild to be honest
I love it! Would love to see Vietnamese or Korean trucking. Vietnam has an interesting market in which most foreign brands truchs and busses are assembled by THACo, a local brand that licenses vehicles from China and Korea such as Hyundai and Foton.

I saw a documentary about the trucks that delivered supplies to some base really far north in Alaska in the '50s. Do they still do things like that, or is the ice trucking you already covered close enough to the same thing?
We have so many trucks, even motorcycles (most preferred vehicle at least in my area) have pick-up versions.

hello. this might not be know but Egyptian trucking does extend well into the gulf countries mainly saudi arabia, as i do see egyptian trucks common on the highways. Btw Saudi Arabian trucking is could be a good think to talk about though I do fear iit being too similar to American trucking but with European trucks. and older models that were initially assembled in saudi arabia to help it's rise one of them is the mercedes short bonnet.

Egyptian here who works in new cairo and does the commute 5 days a week, the traffic is just as bad as regular cairo and most people just consider it part of the greater cairo area now

They didn't create a new Cairo because of traffic problems, but as a way to create a new government body that is easier defendable as the current is in the middle of the city and therefore vulnerable for protests and public outrage as the government is repeateldy accused of human right violations and disfunction.

Do you know much about Mexican trucking? I was watching a trucker drive through an infamous stretch of freeway called "La Rumorosa" that's just outside of Tijuana and now this topic is in my brain.
New Cairo (I live there) is not the same as the New Capital, which I think you were referring to. New Cairo has been around for more than 20 years; and no, it hasn't really helped the traffic. Traffic did improve though, but after they redesigned most of the roads and the adding of innumerable bridges.

You should do Indonesian trucking next! The country consists of 5 major islands and every island have a different trucking culture it's really interesting especially in Papua because the road is really extreme they make their own custom 4x4 trucks.
