Family Rescues Abandoned Guinea Pigs in the Desert

- www.scottysanimals.com I got a message when I was out in the desert about a family who saved a bunch of guinea pigs that were abandoned in a trailer. Animal Control told them just to put them outside but they knew in their heart that wasn't the right thing to do. They reached out to me for advice.

I adopted Olive and Sweet Pea! They are absolute joys to have, and definetely let me know when they want food or attention. I did rename Sweet pea to Bear, because to me she looked like a little baby bear! I'm completely overjoyed that I adopted them last Saturday (December 28, 2019). Thank you all for rescuing them from their awful conditions, and that now I am able to give them the home they deserve.
Shame on animal control :-( So happy these pigs were taken in by Autumn and her family.
it makes me so happy hearing someone say they would never put the piggies outside even when animal patrol said to do so.. huge props to this person.

Your last comment rings so true with me. I must look after me so I can look after the innocent needy critters. I live in Australia and 3 days ago heard a galah screeching. I got there too late. Poor baby had died from stress being caught under chicken wire.

Animal control said to put guinea pigs outside? How absolutely irresponsible of animal control! That is a death sentence for a guinea pig. You and Saskia should report this. I know you have clout in the community. I mean seriously report this. What is WRONG with people.

The family that actually heard the remark is the only one who can report it and expect action. other wise it is second hand, and not considered reliable enough to accuse someone (unless your the President I guess.) lol. . but yes I have had our animal pound lie to me before and cost lives of animals. sad. We are in Utah, and we only have one no kill shelter in the state.

When I was living around Las Vegas in 2019, there was a family that released 2 of their pet rabbits at a little park in the desert. I had a friend who lived next to it and would leave food and water for them. They came every night for a snack and a drink, but they did not trust anyone enough to pick them up. Multiple people tried calling animal control and rescues, but no one ever came to get them. I only lived there for about 2 months, but I still hope they're okay considering there wasn't much edible vegetation.

I keep seeing this come up on my TH-cam suggest videos and even though I don't believe the outcome was grim, I can't get myself to watch it. I can't even imagine abandoning any animal that cannot fend for its self let alone being an animal control person and actually telling people (and be ok with it) to leave completely vulnerable animals out in the hot sun. Shame on any and all of them.
What good guinea pig fosters
Animal Control should be more informed. They need educating cause they're giving people the wrong info. So glad the piggies were rescued by such kind souls.
By the way, the green bag Oxbow pellets Autumn has there isn't good for young, active, pregnant /lactating piggies. (It even says so on Oxbow website.) She should get the red bags instead or just get Sherwood pellets instead since they're most nutritious and have no molasses and fillers.
Animal control needs to be educated on piggies. So glad these were rescued. Popeye is so cute. Nice to see him when he was a baby.

You are a Hero Scott what you do is just admirable caring for vulnerable animals, I too care about animals and try to see things from their point of view and to me most animals are scared for their life most of the time so I try to be respectful and gentle with them. I get along great with our guinea pigs and my family wonder why they react to me better :)

It's sad that people leave animals out without nothing in the dessert . I have 14 guinea pigs and love them too bits . I would adopt more if I could from your rescue center but I'm in Scotland 😊

3:26 shows why the cage panels with 8 holes are dangerous for small piggies. The variant with 9 holes has smaller holes and that reduces the risk on a piggy getting their heads stuck.
U r a very handsome young man and u care for guinea pigs as well as other animals u r a Godsend to these animals.
bless those people and you..the world needs more warm hearts..i work for (freely translated) the animal ambulance and rescue many wild and domestic animals,,its terrible to see how many people just put their piggies/rabbits/chickens and many more just out on the street to vent for themselfs..im a piggiemom(6 piggies) and my heart cries when we find 1 out on the streets..keep on doing the amazing things you do Scott..you are an amazing and caring human being and i hope the world gets more of them

It’s great that they are no longer snake food.
And in a better living environment than they were.
Although I would suggest that the Mom guinea pig should have the bigger cage, not the Dad guinea pig.
Hope they all have a more happy healthier life than they did.
I’m not much for snakes, but maybe there’s a rescue place for them as well.

Hi Angie, thank you for your comment. you will be happy to hear, both will be getting a larger space! I wanted the boys to have the space, because 3 boys would usually fight and the most space they can have, the better. The mama and her baby girl will be getting a cage upgrade as well.

My first rattie was left in an abandoned apartment. The maintenance man brought her to the veterinary hospital where I was working. I named her Pepper and she was the start of my love of rats. There have been many many more since her but she will always be the one who inspired me to adopt and care for these wonderful animals.

I went to petco by my house to grab a water bottle. As I was there I looked around and saw one of there glass cages with like 6 piggies in it and as I was looking a employee came over and told me to take some home and if I didnt like these ones there was more in the back I was like what the crap. Then he said take the ones with red eyes nobody wants red eyes and I felt so sad. I didnt purchase any piggies as I have 4 and no space but still what the heck.

My dad has kept snakes for absolute years and there’s absolutely no need to feed snakes piggies! If people are doing that then it’s for kicks and nothing more.
Feeder animals should be treated with utter respect, there’s no excuse to badly treat them PLUS feeding live food to snakes.. absolutely not! Again people who do this do it for kicks.
Some of the C & C squares are 8x8 squares, some are 9x9. The 8x8 are the ones they can stick their heads through; I'd exchange them ASAP. (I got the 8x8 ones first and switched them.)

I certainly hope those guinea pigs weren't being raised for snake food. Not b/c i'm against snakes (although guinea pigs seem like an unusual food choice) but b/c the pigs weren't being cared for which in turn means the snakes weren't being properly cared for. (Snakes gotta eat too, but ppl that feed them 1. normally use rats or mice 2. the rats/mice are treated well and cared for properly.
kataratify There’s absolutely no need to feed a snake a guinea pig. My dad has kept multiple species of snakes for decades and he’s disgusted with the fact some idiots feed their snakes guinea pigs.
@@Iamaguienapig I agree that it's not the first food choice - I've got pet snakes too. They eat frozen/thawed mice. I know there are -some- rare cases where snakes won't take the "typical" pray item (usually rodents). Most reputable pet owners however will try to transition the snake over to rodents (rats or mice). I'm fairly certain I've not heard of a snake -only- eating guinea pigs - but some need that size prey. Typically in that case young rabbits are used.
kataratify Actually even big snakes like my dads 20 foot female royal python can eat frozen/thawed large rats, because she’s so big she gets a few at a time.
I’m not an advocate for reptiles as pets, I think it’s cruel and unnecessary because at the end of the day they’ll never ever be domesticated and they should be free to live their lives in the wild. People who say “snakes have to eat” while dropping a live animal into their enclosure (which 9/10 is too small got them, luckily my dad takes remarkably good care of his) and watching it with a smirk are seriously fucked up people who need a mental health assessment.
Could you advice them not to let the chicken be on the top of the cage? Birds poop is very acid, plus nothing healthy for the piggies. Other than that they're going to be just fine. Good thing you went to meet them 😊
I love everything about you, this love you have for guinea pigs is amazing. I too love them unconditionally and just recently rescued a skinny pig, I got her a sister too. My Instagram is 'ringo_star_the_guinea_pig' my TH-cam is not nearly as successful as my Insta lol!

That's nice but learning how to take care of pigs on the fly isn't the best idea. Just saying. Someone needs to help these people. Watch Scotty's and Saskia videos will help.
