  • A full in box review of this beautiful new FW 190 from Zokei Mura. The instructions bit is very complicated and lengthy so go to the 40:00 mark and you can straight into the plastic..

For your question about whether the camouflage was hard edged or soft, they were hard edged on top wings and top fuselage. The sides of the camo on the fuselage however became soft. My source was the Valiant Wings book on the 190 Radial-Engine Versions.

For anyone wondering why there are two each of the bubble and flat canopy. The FW190 canopy sat on rails which narrowed towards the rear. To prevent the perspex canopy splitting there was a hinge down the middle of the top.

You asked, I found, Major Kurt Buhligen's FW190 A8 has hardish edge demarcation on most of the large portions of the camouflage. It can be seen that one colour was sprayed tightly over the other without masking. Artist renditions of the aircraft are all hard edge splinter. Very cool pattern.
There is a remarkable RAF training film posted on my channel that shows the application of camouflage on a Spitfire. The second, darker colour sprayed on freehand following a chalk line pattern. I have read large pattern masks were used as well giving a harder edge.
For my 1/18 FW190 A-5, I don't have to do the camo. It will be in bare metal, posed in flight, the way it would look as a modern rebuilt airplane. Similar to the recent Aircorps Aviation P-47 Razorback restoration before the paint.
If it turns out I may get a A8 to do Kurt Buhligen's plane. Thanks Nigel.

Well, now! This one is genuinely exciting! Stunning detail!
On the issue of an aircraft’s wing flaps operating as a pilot is taking off or landing, I hear a debate about their use or deployment outside that situation. Some say that whilst an æroplane is aground, they never are lowered. Others say that if a plane’s hydraulic lines (hoses?) are essentially inert-that is, I infer, the pressure has dropped; and from this, I deduce that said hydraulic pressure is to hold the flaps in a neutral position; that is, they have no ærodynamic influence on the airframe’s flight vector or performance-and the flaps will drop, at least to a degree. Exactly what is true?

From the Stukas and Heinkels I've seen reference photos for, the splinter camo paint schemes were hard edged. RLM 70/71 and 65.

I saw a tip a few years ago that suggested a very thin coating of Tamiya clear green to be applied the edges of armored glass panels for added realism if you can see it.

    Dear Nigel,
The engine assembly is very nicely organised isn’t it? I gather that the fan was designed to rotate slightly faster than the propeller and this allowed (as you say) the aircraft to run for extended periods on the ground. The idea of making a dolly is also rather clever and a good touch!
I’m pleased that ZM made certain that the design of the control column was correct- other makers didn’t do this.
Another excellent review which I haven’t yet seen in its entirety, but will do. Clearly ZM is one of those makers I’ll have to add into my “get one of those” list!!
    Best regards,
    Z

hi Nigel. Thanks for the review. ZM do lovely work.
    On the Ta152 paint I have a old book - Nowra, H. J 1988 (English ed.) "Focke-Wulf Fw190 & Ta152, Aircraft & Legend", Haynes Publishing Group 1988 (English ed.), Sparkford UK.
Shows on pg128 a B&W photo of Works no 150003 as captured at Langenhagen in 1945. It has national markings but no unit markings. It's taken from the rear quarter so the upper wing and tail surfaces are visible. They look angular in the usual German style but the edges do look soft. At this stage in the war things were scarce so it may have varied from aircraft to aircraft.
Lots of photos, works drawings, special weapons, prototypes and lots of tech data. Great reference source. You would love it. I hope this helps a bit. Cheers Matt🦘🦘🦘.

I guess the reason they keep making new 109 kits is….I seem to keep buying them! 😅 As far as I know all during WW2 Luftwaffe aircraft left the factory with “hard” lines, at least on the wings, the fuse lines seem a bit softer. After they were delivered to the conversion unit they got “altered” to whatever the unit getting them specified…and then the final user where anything could happen 😂

I have a Zoukei Mura Mustang, it has the option for a blue southern cross RAAF tail. It seems like there are very few options for allied aircraft recently? Boarder has the Lancaster, not really their development, but all their 35 scale are German or Japanese, Zouki has the mustang, then more modern post war aircraft, but mostly axis aircraft. Is there just more interest in axis aircraft? I see the Akagi bridge and Kate combo is being reviewed about the place.

I went to Raf cosford two weeks ago and seen a fw190. You can see the rivets on the wings and tailplane but they’re alot flusher on the fuselage.
I’m surprised there are none in this scale but including rivets in 1/48 and 1/72 like some manufacturers are way over the top but i do think they look better

Hey Nige, just a little heads up, you might want to check the fit from the cockpit floor to the side fuselage, mine is a little warped and don't fit perfectly in the grooves, would hate to build the cockpit and find out it don't fit the fuselage.. cheers.

It is definitely a Masterpiece. I ve been waiting to get my hands on for 9 years... Wow. Also a very nice presentation/ review. But two minor downsides should be named versus the overall positive impression. First and foremost is the landing gear around 6mm to short. My assumption is that one has measured a museumpiece which must have been displayed with insufficently pressurized landinggear (27 atü). In reality that means the museumpiece sinks down and sits like a lame duck. It is also seen on the FW190 F-8 in the states. Result was that the restauration team painted the load- indicator-scales on the movable and static parts of the landibg gear covers in the wrong position. Eduard have gone the same path with their brassin landing-gear. Revell with their F-8 and A-8 as well as Border Model on their 1/35 FW 190 A-6 have done it correct. A minor thing - , nothing major and correctable but its visible since the two lowest mounting points for the static part mounted on the landinggear-cylinder should be shown and not hidden by the lower part (mounted to the piston) covering the wheel. So, the one who wants to go into depths has to be aware that there is surgery to be done (in form of enlengthening the piston of the landinggearstrut as well as splitting the covers - luckily two versions are included in the kit) when wanting to present the aircraft sitting at the correct angle and the correct height. The Prop-blades seem to be a later version as this version had a 4mm step in the blade- root-shaft and the latter been a bit longer for making room for the balance-weights introduced on later models. So the blades seem a tad to wide since up to A-4s they used a slimmer prop-blade with a different partnumber. The representation seems to be the wider A-5 to A-8 blade. I can only assume that since the engine was moved 152mm forward and ailerons, elevators and vertical stabilizers had been changed that this new blade compensated some changes and gave a better performance at higher altitudes as with the end of 1943 it was forced to fight over 5000m where the FW190 usually had the best performance. But thats my assumption. Fact is there are two different partnumbers for early FWs up to A-4 and from A-5 to A-8/F-8. As mentioned in a different review, the Decal for for fuelquality-requirements is marked with 87 wheras it should be marked with C3 100 octane. Thats my two cents on what to be aware of on an otherwise outstanding, almost perfectly researched and represented kit. Thankyou again, ZM, for delivering such an outstanding model. Bravo!

The ZM A-4 windscreen is roughly 20% too wide by the looks of it (290 scale mms instead of the actual 240 mms X 480 mm in actual size), and this is particularly galling since ZM's own Ta-152H has the same canopy type and is CORRECT dimensionally... This is caused by the failure to understand factory drawings are not always to scale dimensionally... Old tool Eduards were the same, but the new tools fixed it. Also, in all brands, the bulged canopy misses the omega cross section completely (Dragon did make a lame attempt), and this new ZM clear sprue is no exception...
