Have you taken the tape recorder out of it's wooden frame? There are one or two (depending on the older/newer model) more belts underneath the metal plate (for the capstan and the tape counter). Looking at the switches your unit has, it's an older version with 3 belts. The new version has 4 belts and different switches. I recently scored 2 of these at a school. They have the same issue with the melted belts and brakes. Cleaning them is really annoying and very messy. One of them is now working again :-D The other one has got a short circuit on the amplifier PCB :-/ But fixing that isn't difficult. Good luck on fixing ;-)
Belts for the 4307/8 machines can be bought from Germany and Portugal, the tape reel turntables need to be taken off and split as there is a clutch system between the top and bottom section of the tables. these cannot be bought there is no known supplier yet you need to use the pattern if any are left to make new ones there are about four strips to each table assembly, the insides of these tables need to be thoroughly cleaned off to avoid contaminating the freshly made ones, these clutch parts are needed for both the take up reel, fast rewind and fast forward, without these clutch pads the tables won't work resulting in both tables staying stationery, the only tape movement will be the capstan drive resulting in tape spillage and damage.
I have a Philips four track tape recorder 4306 and found the same challenges how ever I managed to make some of the belts and put o rings on two of the wheels now I find that the clutch needs doing witch is proving to be even more of a challenge the tape recorder is circa 1965 any help or advice would be most appreciated mike mc nally scotland
Can you help me please ? I got belts for Philips 4308 tape recorder but I cant understand how the take-up spool works in play mode. It does not turn. there is a belt around the spool but I cant see what operates it. Thanks
There seems to be a lot of belts and other bits for these machines on Ebay in Germany. Do a search for Phillips 4308 on www.ebay.de and you'll see all kinds of things. If you need a hand with anything just give me a shout.

inside the rubber are gone, it works like a clutch. Mr Elephant missed this completely. repair with o-rings
