Ha ha. My mom said I fell asleep in the theater in 1977 for the first movie. The first film I recall seeing in a theater was Return of the Jedi. Yet, I could follow along from what happened in the backstory. Kenner action figures helped.
I am an old enough of a fossil to have sen it in the theater in 1977. Also the actor who was playing Grand Moff Tarkin was Peter Cushing, who famously came into movie history as Van Helsing in the original Hammer horror classic Dracula. The guy who was the monster in Dracula was Christopher Lee, who you may remember as Saruman in tne LOTR and Hobbit movies.
"Fossil" LOL!! That is really cool that you saw it in theaters!! And woah, that's cool information to know about those actors! Thanks for sharing and for watching with us!@@mrwidget42
"Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope" was originally a stand-alone movie and was just called "Star Wars" when it was released in 1977. The episode number and name were added in the 1981 re-release of the movie.
Envy these young guns seeing Star Wars and Lord of the Rings for the first time. Amazing stories. I’ll never forget being a 7 yr old boy and being mindblown by Star Wars in the cinema back in the great summer of ‘77. Great Stuff!!
I was 13 years old in 1977 when I saw Star Wars in the Movie Theatre. The Movie was ahead of its time with the special effects. It was originally just called Star Wars and it was renumbered Episode IV when episode V The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980.
When this came out in the theater, it was revolutionary! It blew the world away! There was a theater near me that on Tuesdays, movies were $2.00, and i went and saw Star Wars, every single Tuesday all summer long. It truly was the perfect movie! And OMG, cannot wait for you to see The Empire Strikes Back!
$2 movies sounds pretty awesome! Especially for Star Wars!!!!! Wow! Looking forward to The Empire Strikes Back next! Thanks for watching with us, Cameron! :)
I think the record in the Bay Area, where I grew up, was 45 times to see Star Wars, in Berkeley (it wasn't called A New Hope then, nor did it have the Episode 4 jazz). The fancier scenes in Mos Eisley was not there either, as it was pasted in in 2010, near to the time Disney acquired Lucasfilm.
The studio 20th Century Fox was angry that Lucas didnt include the studio and cast credits in the intro. This had never been done before. He wanted to get the audience involved and invested immediately.
Filming for The Empire Strikes Back took place from March 5 to September 24, 1979. Filming for Raiders of the Lost Ark began on June 23, 1980 (about a month after TESB hit theaters), lasting about 2.5 months. If that wasn’t enough, filming for Blade Runner began on March 9, 1981, lasting about 4 months. And on and on. Over the 57 years from 1966 to now, there have only been 15 years total in which there wasn’t a movie released in theaters with Harrison Ford in it somewhere (and even in a few of those off years, he was in some television movies). He’s in another movie scheduled for release in 2024.
Wow! That is just incredible!!! Thanks for sharing that info with us! Harrison Ford is such a hardworking actor!! Love to hear that. Thanks for watching ❤
@@tktopmovies Also, when Star Wars premiered in 1977 George Lucas believed it would flop as all sci-fi movies tended to flop in the '70s. So instead of attending the premiere he went to a two week vacation to Hawaii with his friend Steven Spielberg. On that vacation Lucas came up with the idea of an archeologist adventurer Indiana Jones, and with Spielberg they developed the idea into synopsis for the Raiders of Lost Ark. Then when Lucas came back from the vacation he learned that Star Wars had become a huge success. Back in 1977 the movie was not called Episode IV A New Hope but just Star Wars. After the huge success of the Star Wars it became possible for Lucas to tell the whole story with sequels. So only after the next movie Episode V The Empire Strikes Back was released did he change the title of the first movie into Episode IV A New Hope as we know it today. The original 1977 scroll title did not have that name in it. And as a kid who saw it several times in theaters back in 1977-79 the movie still is simply Star Wars to me.
Those creatures aren't from the 70s though. All the effects were practical. These scenes are remastered in the early 2000s, but somewhat made to fit in the 70s aesthetic. All the original creatures were (multiple) humans in costume or stop-motion as far as I remember. Also I am not even that old. xD
"The Force will be with you, always." Fun Fact: The first movie to make over $300 million domestic box office. It was also the first movie to cross $500 million worldwide in its initial release. Action Star Fact: Stunt doubles were not used for the scene where Luke and Leia swing to safety in the Death Star. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher performed the stunt, shooting it in just one take. CGI Over Practical Fact: All the CGI was added in the late 90s and NOT part of the original release. I don't mind the changes, except for originally Han Solo (Harrison Ford) shot Greedo (Paul Blake) before the bounty hunter could do anything. Gun Enthusiast Fact: The weapons the stormtroopers used were essentially the Sterling L2A3 9mm SMG (sub-machine gun), a military weapon developed in the late 1940s in the U.K. and adopted by the British and Canadian Armies in the 1950s. The curved left entry side mounted magazine was removed, and that was as much as it was modified for the movie. The longer sandtrooper weapon was the MG-34 machine gun from Germany. Location Location Fact: The Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia. There is a town in Tunisia's rural south named Tataouine (Berber for "eyes") and George Lucas liked the name so much, he adopted it for Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) home world. Some of the interiors and the courtyard of Luke's house were filmed in a hotel in Matmata, Tunisia. One can visit this two-star hotel and see some pictures and the painted ceiling of what was used for the Lars' dining room. When Luke goes out of the farm, he appears in a flat deserted area, while the reality, when you get out of the hotel, there are a lot of other houses, small stone hills, and a lot of prickly pear cacti (a variety very common in Tunisia). The skeleton that C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) passes belongs to a Tatooine creature called a Greater Krayt Dragon. This artificial skeleton was left in the Tunisian desert after filming and still lies there. During filming of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones (2002), the site was visited by the crew once more and the skeleton was still there.
A lot of George Lucas' influence for Star Wars came out of old black and white movie serials like Flash Gordon. Flash also had the opening text scroll like what was used in Star Wars. The same also goes for those scene-transition slides. It's also where the movie's pacing comes from. It's as if you're seeing each episode of a serial back-to-back. Speaking of the title, I'm old enough to remember when "Star Wars IV: A New Hope" was simply titled "Star Wars". It got the lengthier title when the prequel trilogy came out and the original trilogy was remastered.
Star wars was Harrison Fords first role and it launched his career. George Lucas to create the effects in this move created his own special effects company called Industrial light and magic. And he revolutionized special effects. It's why it holds up 47 years later. John Williams, the composer for Star Wars soundtrack is one of the most famous film composers. He also composed for Indian Jones, Superman (with Christopher Reeves) and Harry Potter to name some of his most iconic soundtracks. I also believe George Lucas worked with Steven Speilburg together in the Indiana Jones Franchise at least for the first few films.
Technically this wasn't his first role, but it is the one that launched his career. He was in 8 films before this from 1966-1974, some uncredited or as Harrison J. Ford. He was in American Graffiti with a dozen other people that went on to do iconic movies.
Those little guys at the beginning of the movie are Jawas. (Scavengers) just fyi. And for an interesting factoid...When Carrie Fisher Passed away, her Mother Debbie Reynolds, died the very next day..sadly.

Star Wars first timer reactions are some of my fave! I love this series so much! I love watching others experience it for the first time!❤ thanks for your work!
1. IRL Sir Alec Guinness didn't want to play Obi Wan, He thought the entire premise was silly, but his wife talked him into taking it. The rest is history. 2. This episode of the saga was released first because Lucas felt it was the easiest one to make and provide an outstanding product with the technology they had at the time. 3. This movie came out way before CGI was available. The scene with Jabba the Hutt, the large critters outside the cantina and the ones being ridden by the stormtroopers are CGI and was put in later with the 25 years anniversary edition. 4. The BEST way to watch these are in the order they were released. Keep in mind that we had to wait years between episodes. there wasn't any internet or memes like. "I am your father" as spoilers. 5. The scene in the detention center where Han Solo ends up saying "how are you" is a goof on Harrison Ford's part. He forgot his lines. 🤣 6. In an appearance on Johnny Carson when this came Carrie Fisher said the Chewy is a 300-year-old Wookie. 7. Obi Wan didn't die. He went into the force. 8. The smirk and shrug Chewy gives Luke after he scares the little black droid is 🤣 9. Welcome aboard. You're in for a hell of a ride.
Hey William! Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment :) Wow, just imagine if he didn't take that role! Love reading all of these fun facts and they're so interesting! We are looking forward to the Empire Strikes Back next!!!
So, I live near Seattle, and the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall will do performances where they will show the movie while the orchestra is assembled on the stage, and they will play the sound track _live_ in the concert hall. Last year, I actually went to see Return of the Jedi live in concert, and it was AMAZING.
TK Top, the brown-robed characters at the start are Jawas. You may have heard that when they did the "touch-ups" of the original movies, they changed some of the scenes. The first was the one starting around 9:25, where the animal mounts were added. I've always thought that the introduction at around 19:50 of Tattooine being in a binary system (twin suns) is so amazing. At around 29:45, they're coming out of hyperspace. What a special effect that is!! At 43:20, they're landing on the newest Rebel base at Yavin. Your questions about how Owen and Beru seemed to know Obi-Wan, you're right. You'll see that in one of the movies from the first trilogy. All the fun/exciting things that happened in the movie were true. But over, under, and around all of it was that phenomenal sound track from John Williams.
I saw this in the theaters at 13 and it was so crowded, we had to sit in the first row. Trying to read the scrolling info was a nightmare, but worth it.
Obi Wan accomplished two things by allowing himself to be killed by Darth Vader. 1) He distracted everyone so that it would give the rest of them a chance to escape. 2) He martyred himself to Luke so that Luke would hate the Empire and everything they stand for. Luke is essentially the rebels last hope, and he knows that if Luke is turned to the dark side, he would fail to fulfill his destiny. The ending of this movie is so disrespectful to Chewbacca and R2D2. They were just as much heroes as Luke and Han. They deserved medals too!
I noticed episode 9 had a distinct lack of wipe transitions. Many fans had problems with how fast paced it was, more wipe transitions would have helped slow the pace down at least a bit.
I have a few movie recommendations for you to watch once your done with Star Wars and those would be - The Mighty Ducks trilogy (staring Emilo Esteves - The Outsiders - Pirates of the Carribean - Secret Admirer - Red Dawn (1984) - Tex - The Bumblebee flies anyway And - Flipper
This is the best of all the star wars movies to me..the most effort was put into it..empire strikes back is good though it began using more puppets and CGI..Yoda was good ..Boba Fett..some other things..then return of the jedi is fun only more CGI..more puppets..teddy bear wizard of oz characters..
That's awesome to hear that this is your favorite one! It was sooo good! We can't wait to see what happens next in the story :) Thanks for watching with us!
Fun facts: escape pod scene drawbacks are the transportation on tatooine. I recreated that scene with sand, drawback, stormtroopers, pod, light blue background sort of a diorama. (2) videos for you :(1) yavin escape a star wars fan film. (2) revisited battle of yavin( adywan) version user star wars comparison
My contention is that, of the central trilogy, Episode IV is the most exhilarating; Episode V, the most profound; and Episode VI, the most satisfying. Which, doubtless, is just how old George intended it. 😎
This is an updated version you are watching. The original 70s version didn’t have all the cool CGI creatures. That was added in the 90s for a rerelease in theaters. Like that Jaba scene was all new.
There's a moment in this movie, right when it's at its most tense (the death-star trench run) that always makes me laugh a little when I see it. When Vader orders his wingmen to let Wedge go (after he gets hit) is one of the most significant events in all of Star Wars legend cannon. You'll get to see why in the next movies :):)
- Welcome to the 1977 film, and subsequent trilogy, that would launch a franchise. - You've seen Carrie Fisher, as Princess Leia, in the sequel trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker). - Exterior shots of Tatooine were filmed in Tunisia. - Full orchestra concerts of John Williams movie compositions, including those from Star Wars, are regularly done (many on a yearly basis). Here in Southern California, he conducts his own concerts at Disney Hall and the Hollywood Bowl (where many fans, including myself, will bring our lightsabers).
When this originally came out in 1977 there was nothing about Episode IV or "A New Hope". These were added later Lucas (during the re-release in 1981). You watched the sequels before anything else? I am amazed anyone got you to sit down and watch other SW movies after that. ; p The Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia, a small country in northern Africa. Luke's home is still there. All the CGI stuff was added in later re-releases. None of it is original to the first release. The most exotic thing in the 1977 release are the creatures in the cantina. And even some of those were replaced with CGI later on. There was a lot more to Obi-Wan's choice to die death than a simple sacrifice to let them escape. But I cannot tell you until you've watched Empire. No spoilers! ; )
Seeing your reaction to Star Wars brought tears of joy to my eyes! You’ve begun to take your first step into an amazing journey! I really can’t wait to see the next reactions! Avoid spoilers at all costs! All the answers to your questions will be revealed as you progress through the trilogies. Harrison Ford (Han Solo) plays another iconic role, Indiana Jones; I highly recommend the Indians Jones series especially with the last film coming out this month. Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) is known for voicing the iconic villain of Batman in Batman The Animated Series; the Joker. James Earl Jones the voice of Darth Vader is the voice of Mufasa from The Lion King. The late Carrie Fisher’s mother Debbie Reynolds appeared in Disney Channel’s famous Halloweentown tetralogy. 🌌🛸☠️🌟⚔️💛🖤💙❤️
You ruined the first scene with Obi-Wan by telling her it's him. You really need to watch what you're saying when you react with someone who never watched the movie.
Ok for the next ones PLEASE DO NOT watch the special edition. Try to get a copy of the originals. The Special Editions ruined a lot of things, including changing the music for no reason, random meaningless CGI, etc. Love your reaction though! "This is the perfect movie" - pretty much!

"Star Wars" was given the name "A New Hope" when the sequel, _"The Empire Strikes Back"_ was released.
The Death Star attack was story boarded with shots from the 1950s movie Dam Busters and there is a version of it on TH-cam.

So cute to see you watch this movie that I saw 100 times at least..wish I could go back and watch it for the first time ❤
Thanks for watching with us, Patrick!!! That means a lot to us!
The external shot where the falcon is is landing at the rebel base, that is shot at the ancient Mayan city of Tikal.
Let’s do it!
Hey Brandon!! Thanks for watching :) 🎉
Yes!!!! Chewbacca and R2D2 were essential too!! Agree!!
Love that I'm getting to see this reaction on my birthday! 💥💥Fun stuff! Thanks you two! Excited for more!💖
Happy Birthday Melissa!!!! We hope you had a fabulous day!! ❤ You’re awesome!!
@@tktopmovies thank you, so are you! 😍
The desert scenes were filmed in Tunisia :)
That’s awesome to hear!!!! Wow what a scene!!
Lukes vehicle on Tatooine is called a Land Speeder. Just FYI, love that your reacting to this.
I noticed episode 9 had a distinct lack of wipe transitions.
Many fans had problems with how fast paced it was, more wipe transitions would have helped slow the pace down at least a bit.
Great reaction ! Love how you both appreciate the humor
Hey Megan!! So happy you enjoyed this with us! This was awesome! Can’t wait for more!!!

Those little guys in brown cloaks with the yellow eyes they are called Jawa's
They’re so cute 😊
these movie were out every 3 yrs
Watch Spaceballs (Mel Brooks) after the original Star Wars trilogy.
My contention is that, of the central trilogy, Episode IV is the most exhilarating; Episode V, the most profound; and Episode VI, the most satisfying.
Which, doubtless, is just how old George intended it. 😎
My favorite STAR WARS movie - RETURN OF THE JEDI.
Favorite character -
Princess Leiah
The version that you guys are watching/watched was a re-release from the mid 90s...
Have you seen the other version? Adywan's episode 4? Very cool!
Star Wars selection so far and the IV the middle!
'Here they come.' Funny she should say that...
It’s always going to be “Star Wars” to me, not A New Hope.
Kind of that way for me. It's "Star Wars" then "The Empire Strikes Back" etc.
This is an updated version you are watching. The original 70s version didn’t have all the cool CGI creatures. That was added in the 90s for a rerelease in theaters. Like that Jaba scene was all new.
the CGI Is Not "Cool" At all.
Wow that Jabba scene and all the CGI was new and not in the 70’s version? That’s awesome!!! Would have never known! Thanks, Sean!
The "Bono cheetie guys" are called Jawas.
Gold four standing by..get set up for your attack run
PS2 game SW episode 3 a bonus level/campaign you can play as obi wan vs Vader on the death star
awww... Anakin keeps telling people not to kill his kids.
Y’all should watch Star Wars Episode 1-9
Dude just Spoils everything smh
C'mon Stop Answering her questions ! Everything is in The Damn Movie !
39:34 😂
There's a moment in this movie, right when it's at its most tense (the death-star trench run) that always makes me laugh a little when I see it. When Vader orders his wingmen to let Wedge go (after he gets hit) is one of the most significant events in all of Star Wars legend cannon. You'll get to see why in the next movies :):)
Ooooh that’s awesome hahah! Thanks for watching with us! We appreciate it :) Can’t wait for more!
Comment #3 sorry ---also there is the star wars arcade trilogy video game very cool
Hey Leo! Thank you so much for answering all of our questions!! Loved reading this comment!!
When this originally came out in 1977 there was nothing about Episode IV or "A New Hope". These were added later Lucas (during the re-release in 1981).
You watched the sequels before anything else? I am amazed anyone got you to sit down and watch other SW movies after that. ; p
The Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia, a small country in northern Africa.
Welcome back!! So happy you're here to experience Star Wars with us!!!!!! We are SO excited to watch The Empire Strikes Back this weekend!
Han shot first 🔫
I hope he stops answering her questions in the next parts.
You ruined the first scene with Obi-Wan by telling her it's him. You really need to watch what you're saying when you react with someone who never watched the movie.
Great reaction you two....these original 3/the original trilogy are the G.O.A.T.
Thank you so much for watching with us!! Can’t wait for the rest of this journey! ❤
Ok for the next ones PLEASE DO NOT watch the special edition. Try to get a copy of the originals. The Special Editions ruined a lot of things, including changing the music for no reason, random meaningless CGI, etc.
Love your reaction though! "This is the perfect movie" - pretty much!
The new sequels suck a rip off of the original movies
