Thanks for making this. I'm a life long musician but now I'm making the jump to home studios. I'm green but I play guitar, bass, drums and keys. Now I just need to start recording my stuff.
@BluKolaBtz Yeah, check a few comments down. The 003 and the StudioLive are completely different things entirely. One is a control surface; one is a digital mixer.
@ultramouse Yeah, a lot of interfaces have the ability to do no-latency routing, but it's a software interface. This let's you simply grab faders and go. Makes sessions go really quickly.
On my latest release I tracked and mixed in PT10 and then Mastered in StudioOne 2. I really like how PreSonus arranged the Project window in StudioOne.
@monk103 I believe you can daisy chain this with another Presonus interface or mixer for more inputs, but I might be mistaken. I know you can do that with the two bigger mixers. You might not be able to with the little guy. If you need more inputs get the bigger mixers.
Thanks Joe. I just off the CCISolutions rundown of this board for live use. I found your video great for what my needs are. Seems like it's a great board for live and studio use. Thanks for the post. Ted.
@HomeStudioCorner Thanks for the review. As for the latency: a lot of interfaces nowadays do indeed have hardware monitoring (a relatively cheap emu 0204 does this, for instance). No software needed, you don't even have to have your computer turned on. ...and to be a bit nitpicky, even when using hardware monitoring, you will always have some (negligible) latency. I guess "near-zero latency" would be the appropriate term.
@semmysylvia It's not a control surface, so it doesn't do any of that. As far as latency, as I said in the video, since it's just a mixer, there is no latency, because you can listen straight off the board.
It will daisy-chain with their other FW devices, but I don't know about the 2626. it's older. CAll Presonus and ask 'em. That's the safest way to know for sure.
@klaasjanouwens You're right. What I mean is since this is a live mixer, just like an analog mixer, there's no real latency. The singer can sing on stage and hear himself in the monitor...just like an analog board. There's technically "latency" in a single mic cable. :)
@HomeStudioCorner Although the downside is that Pro Tools (9 certainly) doesn't allow you to turn off software monitoring, so you have to fudge a solution either by muting the channel manually every time you go into record, or use a third party plugin like MuteTone. If you're using Pro Tools 10, I'd be interested to know if the StudioLive works with Low Latency Monitoring (apparently it's limited only to interfaces with DSP mixers on board).
Have they made something that is an update for this, or is this still the latest one? I looked through the manual to see what it could do, and I think it would do great for as a mixer for live streams where you want more than one microphone and have control over levels for you and the stream differently and do it all on the console itself.
I'm considering of getting the 16.0.2. But I want to make sure it can be daisy chained with FireStudio 2626. It looks like you have the 2626 behind you. Have you tried daisy chaining it?
Hey Joe. First off, thank you for all your vids. All very helpful. Second question, I have a 16.0.2 and I can not seem to get talkback into headphone outs or monitor outs. I get TB out of aux 1-4 but nothi g else. Can ypu please advise? Thank you
Why is it discontinued?? :( Is there another option now maybe? I want something like this amazing machine but 16, 24 or 32. But small compact portable like this one also if possible.
Hey Joe great educational video . I am considering purchasing this mixer for my home project studio. What is the best way to connect my headphone amp and outboard gear,i.e., DBX Tube channel strip and a Lexicon FX processor? Thx!
Joe I have an issue where only 2 channels are working out of the 16th. Do you have any advice for fixing this problem? I'm in south california and failed to get any support even from presonus themselves (shows like they don't provide support for this equipments anymore) thanks
You do it through Universal Control. I looked it up in the manual for you: pae-web.presonusmusic.com/downloads/products/pdf/StudioLiveClassicSoftware_ReferenceManual_EN.pdf
Hello Joe ,I apologize if someone has asked this already, but digi 03 comes with protools...for near the same price, is there that big of a difference between the presonus and the digi? thanks in advance
Hi mate, when mixing AND recording live gigs can you set it to record dry i.e without fx,eq etc so you can mix to taste back in the studio? Thanks for the video mate,Anton.
So I'm curious. I noticed you previously used the Digi 003. Have you traded it out for the 16.0.2? And if so. What are you using for mixing? Are you using the fader port or using a mouse?
If you have effects on Presonus during recording, can effects be turned off each individual track *After, recording with Pro Tools, since the board is so inter connected? Thanks!
Hi Joe - Got my new mixer today but how can I get Studio One to recognise the Presonus 16.0.2 USB as a control surface? So I have more hands on control when tracking? Great vids - Many thanks, David
hello good day, I bought a studio live 16.0.2 and I'm having trouble using the parametric equalizer her, do not know how to equalize no feedback could help me?
Hey Joe, I recently bought a mixer just like this and was wondering if you have a problem with bleed through between AUX's. I'm trying to run vocals to a powered speaker out of AUX 1 and my guitar through a powered speaker through AUX 2 and the vocal is coming through AUX 2 a little. The guitar isn't coming through AUX 1. I'm wondering if the effects A and B don't somehow cause this. Any ideas?
does it have a built-in audio interface? i record lots of vocals directly to the DAW and then i just mix them down i have an audio interface but i want to have a mixer to make it easier for me to mix, question is can i do this (Mic ==> PreAmp/COMPRESSOR -rack- ==> StudioLive 16 ==> PC/MAC) pls answer please thnx
Hi Joe. Nice review. I’m considering to trade my soundcraft mfxi and my tc studio konnekt 48 for this little studiolive. It seems to be the ideal piece of gear to use both live and in the studio.. About the monitoring I suppose you do need a headphone amp?Or the aux are “amplified”? Just one more think. I love your website but it’s great to actually SEE you talking to us Don’t misunderstand me, I love your writing but having the visual is a real “plus”. Thank you for sharing Bruno from belgium
Joe, when you're recording in your studio do you use the main mix (i.e. the faders) for the performers' monitors or do you use an aux mix? I would imagine that using the main mix as your "monitor" mix would be much more flexible.
Nope. The manual says they were NOT designed to be on their side. Appreciate the input, but you really can't know how they were meant to be used unless you consult the manual and accompanying documentation.
nice review, thanks, regarding the latency thing though: don't most interfaces come with the ability to direct-monitor these days? For instance, I use Presonus's own Universal Control app to route audio to the headphones of my band as I record, without latency. Might be easier with this little guy though, I like the looks of it.
Please help! how do you Connect youre Console on mac? do you use a PCI Express Card or other tools? i Connect my Console With a Apple adapter Cable firewire to thunderbolt. but its not Working. :( best reguards from Germany sorry for bad english
You need the correct firewire lead. Firewire 800 IEEE 1394B Cable 9 pin to 6 pin. Did you get one of those? Got to be 9 pin to 6 pin. I have one and it works perfectly.
my presonus studiolive 16.0.2 gives no more sound but shows it shows. when I open cubase 5 it shows the meter-meters but no sound. when I turn it off and on again 20 minutes later it gives the sound. What is the problem? Help me please. and the more days pass, the longer the time becomes
Hi Joe, nice video. I'm new to this kind of thing, and I recently bought a Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 AI and the main DAW is Pro Tools 10. I managed to record signal, but was not able to listen the playback. Would you mind to explain how can I do this?! I just want to do a track by track record, while listen the recorded material and monitoring the instrument I am playing. A straight record I guess.. I know is pretty basic, but after a while researching and reading the manuals I'm kind of frustated and don't know where to go. Thanks, cheers from Brazil.
Have you read the manual? That's the first thing I would do. Get the PDF and read it cover to cover. It will make your life much easier. My guess is you either haven't routed the outputs in Pro Tools to a pair of channels on the mixer, or you haven't pressed the "Firewire" buttons at the top of the mixer to switch those channels to play back from the computer.
Hi Joe, thanks for the almost intantly reply. I read the manual, several times indeed, but as I told you, I'm kind of new to this area and lots of things don't make sense due to my inexperience. Last night even before your answer I managed to listen the output with StudioOne, I routed the main to 2Track Out and turned on the firewire. I really don't feel this is the "correct" way to do it, but it solved the issue temporarily. I guess I will try to ask for specific sequence of actions on the support of Presonus. Anyway, many thanks again, for you time and kindness.
Do you still recommend the 16 and can you playback everything in studio one vox midi gtr drums or just while your recording? I just have a small home studio
Absolutely perfect choice. I've been using dual Firestudio Projects but just picked up the Presonus 16.0.2 as the main recording / playback device. Daisy chained via firewire to my two Firestudio Projects gives me a total of 30 inputs and outputs.
Hey guys I'm really interested in getting this mixer. One question I have is that while I know it has no direct outs for use with outboard gear, if I have prerecorded tracks (in my DAW), can I send, say, my guitar track, form my DAW to output 1, then send that to Aux 1, then from the aux go to my outboard before then plugging into input 2 to record the audio through the outboard. Cheers
Hello Joe! What configurations I need for Macbook Pro to multi-track recorder audio from Presonus 32.4.2 ? I have Macbook Pro 13.3 i7 2.9 dual-core/ 8 GB/1600MHz. It is good for...?
hey....some questions here...... imagine that i just recorded a voice and i'm using channel 1 but i want to record another voice using the same channel...theres going to be difficulties in the mixing? like when i use the fader to change the volume in one voice automatically is going to change the other voice?
it is near perfect for me, the only three things it lack is stereo aux out for me to stream stereo to my smartphone, motorize fader and daw control for me to control................ my daw, obviosly🤣🤣🤣
Muchas Gracias!!
Of course, when you're monitoring your input signal, there won't be any latency. Every analog mixer can do that. Even my Behringer UCA202 audio interface does that. That's not really mentionable.
great review. however, there IS latency from input to output when using a digital mixer (in -> A/D -> DSP -> D/A -> out). this will be small, maybe even "unnoticable" (
Thanks for making this. I'm a life long musician but now I'm making the jump to home studios. I'm green but I play guitar, bass, drums and keys. Now I just need to start recording my stuff.
I have one. I love it! It rocks both live and in the studio. The compressor in every channel is great.
@BluKolaBtz Yeah, check a few comments down. The 003 and the StudioLive are completely different things entirely. One is a control surface; one is a digital mixer.
I just ordered one of these. I had no idea it has been around more than 12 years.... You look young there Joe.. lol. I love your videos!
@ultramouse Yeah, a lot of interfaces have the ability to do no-latency routing, but it's a software interface. This let's you simply grab faders and go. Makes sessions go really quickly.
Yep, absolutely.
On my latest release I tracked and mixed in PT10 and then Mastered in StudioOne 2. I really like how PreSonus arranged the Project window in StudioOne.
@juca2929 Yep. It works fine with Pro Tools. PT just sees it as a 16-channel interface.
Yeah, using S1 on this record I'm working on.
@slimmivy I would say the preamps and converters are better on the StudioLive, but again, it's NOT a control surface.
@monk103 I believe you can daisy chain this with another Presonus interface or mixer for more inputs, but I might be mistaken. I know you can do that with the two bigger mixers. You might not be able to with the little guy. If you need more inputs get the bigger mixers.
Yep. It's got 12 mic inputs. 16 simultaneous tracks of recording.
Hi Joe would you consider re-doing this review of the PreSonus 16.0.2 USB which i recently picked up and could use a tutorial?
I second this bro
I third this lol
@BrunoBaudewyns Thanks Bruno! The Aux outputs are just like any other mixer. They're line outputs. You'll need a headphone amp.

I'm looking at buying this mixer used. but I've come across people who have had bad experiences with the mixer, now I'm a bit reluctant on buying it
Hi, great video. I wonder, if I could reproduce previously recorded tracks, and simoultanesly record the voice track. Thanks
+Pedro Ghiguly Yep!
Very much thanks
@marleybutler I know of no digital mixer cheaper than this. It really is the best thing in this price range. There's not really anything else like it.
@HomeStudioCorner Although the downside is that Pro Tools (9 certainly) doesn't allow you to turn off software monitoring, so you have to fudge a solution either by muting the channel manually every time you go into record, or use a third party plugin like MuteTone.

Yep. It's easy to want to compress EVERYTHING, though. :)

@drkeyzcarter M-Audio EX66's. They're discontinued.

Hi Joe. What brand and model are those monitors? Don't believe i have ever seen those...
BTW, I'm referring to "automation". One last thing. Are you now using Studio 1? I'm absolutely loving the program.
@HomeStudioCorner Thank you for the reply :)
Hey Joe great educational video . I am considering purchasing this mixer for my home project studio. What is the best way to connect my headphone amp and outboard gear,i.e., DBX Tube channel strip and a Lexicon FX processor? Thx!

Hi Joe.. Is it possible from the presonus firewire 400 out connected to laptop USB... Thanks 🙏
Nope. You need a firewire port.
Thanks for the reply Joe..🤘
Do you know if I can link it with a project mix from m audio?
Hi great video, but i have a question How can i conect the presonnus to the Mac?
How do I set the 16.0.2 back to the factory settings? Thank you.
You do it through Universal Control. I looked it up in the manual for you: pae-web.presonusmusic.com/downloads/products/pdf/StudioLiveClassicSoftware_ReferenceManual_EN.pdf
Hello can you tell me how to mix the firewire volume separately from the main mix (speakers) PLEASEEE I've been trying this for weeks! Presonus 16.0.2
Only firewire? No usb output to you computer?
Hello Joe ,I apologize if someone has asked this already, but digi 03 comes with protools...for near the same price, is there that big of a difference between the presonus and the digi? thanks in advance
If I want to connect this to my laptop, specifically what cable/s should I get?
Don’t want to go the wrong route.
Hi Joe, which Mac book model should I buy to work with the FireWire port?
hi, nice video. When it's connected to a mac and i'm using logic...the efx engines on the mixer do they sync to the clik?
Hi mate, when mixing AND recording live gigs can you set it to record dry i.e without fx,eq etc so you can mix to taste back in the studio? Thanks for the video mate,Anton.
What about latency for daw monitoring ?
What if your not recording live instruments, just wanna use it for my cubase or fl studios for mixing
yeah it is still possible but u won't be able to control yo daw
Does anyone know if the USB audio ins are stereo or if stereo tracks in the DAW take 2 channels on the mixer?
i use this sometimes i really like this mixer studio one is a decent daw to great review
Do you need a power amp for a live setting?
So I'm curious. I noticed you previously used the Digi 003. Have you traded it out for the 16.0.2? And if so. What are you using for mixing? Are you using the fader port or using a mouse?
Is 24bit / 48khz ok for recording studio quality?
If you have effects on Presonus during recording, can effects be turned off each individual track *After, recording with Pro Tools, since the board is so inter connected? Thanks!
Hi Joe - Got my new mixer today but how can I get Studio One to recognise the Presonus 16.0.2 USB as a control surface? So I have more hands on control when tracking? Great vids - Many thanks, David
Can you mix tracks you've recorded on the mixer later?
Hey what are the amps and boxes we need for out program
Sorry I don't understand your question.
hello good day, I bought a studio live 16.0.2 and I'm having trouble using the parametric equalizer her, do not know how to equalize no feedback could help me?
Can you control your DAW with it? As in when you're mixing with the faders, eq's and what have you.
Any ideas?
hey Joe I have a 16.0.2 is there anyway I can use the faders to help me mix?
Please help me: How to make a subgroup in studiolive 16.0.2 for drumset, voices, guitars, etc.?
You can’t. 16.0.2 doesn’t have subgroups.
Can't you just send those channels to an AUX and your sub group is done?
does it have a built-in audio interface? i record lots of vocals directly to the DAW and then i just mix them down i have an audio interface but i want to have a mixer to make it easier for me to mix, question is can i do this (Mic ==> PreAmp/COMPRESSOR -rack- ==> StudioLive 16 ==> PC/MAC) pls answer please thnx
Yes it does
can this be used with cubase and a windows computer
+Jessie Cuellar I assume so. But you'll have to do your homework/research
When doing studio recording do you have to use Presonus's DAW, or is the board compatible with other DAWs?
Hi Joe.
Nice review. I’m considering to trade my soundcraft mfxi and my tc studio konnekt 48 for this little studiolive. It seems to be the ideal piece of gear to use both live and in the studio..

Hi Joe! Do you think the StudioLive 16.0.2 properly drives a Sennheiser HD600/HD650? Or is it necessary an additional headphone amp?
+Fellipe Baldauf I think it's fine for those. I never got an external amp.
Please help! how do you Connect youre Console on mac? do you use a PCI Express Card or other tools? i Connect my Console With a Apple adapter Cable firewire to thunderbolt. but its not Working. :(

Yeah I just plug it in via firewire. If it's not working you'll probably need to talk to tech support.

+Rusty Cooksie Yup, that's the way to do it. It's a bit clunky but totally doable as long as you only need to send a handful of channels at a time.
Exactly This Mixer is coming Out now, With Usb. check it out
SuperPasquale76 have you use this mixer? does the compressor remove hissing?
Hello Joe! What configurations I need for Macbook Pro to multi-track recorder audio from Presonus 32.4.2 ? I have Macbook Pro 13.3 i7 2.9 dual-core/ 8 GB/1600MHz. It is good for...?

Love my Digi 003
does the compressor eliminate mic hissing?
How do I record with this board in Pro Tools with no latency???
You just listen off the board and don't monitor from Pro Tools.
it is near perfect for me, the only three things it lack is stereo aux out for me to stream stereo to my smartphone, motorize fader and daw control for me to control................ my daw, obviosly🤣🤣🤣
Have you tested the mic pre's ?
YEah I've recorded lots of projects through these StudioLive boards. Great, straight-forward, clean preamps.
is it supported condenser microphones?
Yes you can turn phantom power (+48 volts) for condenser microphones on each channel!

Muchas Gracias!!
nice review
Great review man!
@CyberZdk 1. You're welcome!
2. Have you ever recorded in my room? ;)
wow..your video nine years ago 😀
Who's the baby in the video!?
Of course, when you're monitoring your input signal, there won't be any latency. Every analog mixer can do that. Even my Behringer UCA202 audio interface does that. That's not really mentionable.
do i need an audio interface
If you wan to record anything, yes.But this mixer IS an audio interface.
so if i buy this thing do i really need an audio interface? i mean to say is it an audio interface
i can plug in my studio headphones n studio monitors
yes you can it is like an audio interface with Eq compression and fx and more
sounds like it is my kind of device i was buy a small one focusrite scarlett
I can't my Mac to communicate with my 16.0.2! help
Hmm...downloaded the lastest version of the Universal Control App? Restarted the mixer and/or computer?
awesome got it thanks!
Great vid...subscribed!
Thanks Brian!
this would be perfect for me, i just miss the motorized faders, controlling the daw :(
Thank you! :)
great review. however, there IS latency from input to output when using a digital mixer (in -> A/D -> DSP -> D/A -> out). this will be small, maybe even "unnoticable" (
I need help please boss
