A cutsew is called a cutsew because a serger both cuts and sews that material! I believe many j-fashions use the term because you can find things labeled as cutsews all over Japanese retailers :) Btw now I wanna make a video drawing Bath and Bodywork’s scents as lolita prints 😅
This comment should be pinned! I am shocked to just now learn the name association for cutsew. All these years, I just assumed it was a weird mistranslation from Japanese to English.

cutsews are any clothing gamrent in lolita that is mainly made from a like strechy t-shirt material, cotton jersey most likely, but they can have some other fabrics in sleeves and collars as well, brands make cutsew dresses as well sometimes not just tops , I used to be obsessed with them bc they are more casual and can be more comfy bc of the strechiness, I didn't know they're constructed mostly with a serger tho that bit is news to me but i just checked my cutsews to see for myself, you live and learn !! A serger is a type of sewing machine, mostly used for finishing the raw edges of fabric but you can sew seams with it as well, if you look inside a t-shirt at the seams you'll see watch a serged edge looks like
Serger can also be called an overlocker in some counties

I'm glad I stopped the video to take the test! I got everything right except for when Closet Child opened, but...I am also 60 and I bought GLB#1 when it first came out, so don't feel bad. :) The cutsew thing is a trick question, btw. A stretchy top made on a serger is the lolita-specific definition. "Cutsew" is a term of art in sewing for any casual top created by cutting and sewing, but obviously that's not the lolita term! I would mess up the Bath and Body Works quiz because I don't like Bath and Body Works, hahah. BTW, "margaret" is a loanword that means "daisy" in Japanese, that's why it's in so many print names. It is also the name of a long running manga magazine :)

Specifying the serger in the cutsew question is odd. Yes it will most likely be sewn with a serger, but so are most clothing items. While sergers are handy sewing stretchy fabric, I could still sew a stretchy frilly shirt with my regular sewing machine and it would not be less of a cutsew.

I took the test before watching and got 70/100, I have been into lolita fashion since 2006 and started wearing it almost a decade ago. I am not good at remembering names or dates/years and it shows in this exam too lol
Also it bugged me that cutsew was said to be a top or shirt from a strechy material, but there are other items too like dresses, and it is a discriptive word for for lolita items made from strechy materials, usually more casual and comfy
Wait, I wanna do the bath and body works one now! But, yes, the questions should be the same each time, it just shuffles them :) I agree about the 2010s stuff too though, there is so much that only exists in very ephemeral forms of media. Like all the history on EGL is dependant on people not deleting their LJ accounts and posts, and there is so much content on tumblr and facebook and twitter that is essentially nearly unsearchable. So many of the blogs from that era are being deleted as the bloggers stop writing or the blogging platforms close. I feel like there is almost less information from the 2010s than from the early 2000s just because so much of the content wasn't picked up by things like the wayback machine or put into print. And there is so much that is just group knowledge, like who the designers for various indie brands are, and when brands started or renamed. It's a lot... (Also hope you are feeling better!)

I was a bit shocked you didn't know who Heart--E was, but then I thought about it a little and considered it might not be common knowledge for people who started in the late 2000s or later.
Like usual I was terrible at the prints because my wardrobe is mainly old school and print questionnaires usually focus on 2010 or later. I own one borderprint and it's from 2007.
For the general quiz I got the question about Closet Child wrong. My first answer was 1998, but then I remembered reading they were already open throughout the 90s so I guessed 1992.

I tried the first test and I got 75/100. I just entered the fashion like early 2010s. Not familiar with old Lolita facts, so I made a mistakes on that part.
