There should be a mention of using Diversity as a shield against criticism ("if you don't like it you are -ist or -phobe") somewhere before 3:27 mark. Further more there needs to be acknowledgment that this tactic is industry standard across many media (not just games but TVshows and Movies) and made itself a brand of its own that audiences can recognize. When people see this diversity in their media it became synonymous with bad quality and an excuse for political, moralizing narratives which is Immensely harmful for progress of tolerance these individuals seam to be so set on. As a regular adult gamer, i approve this message. 99% of gamers don't care what race, gender or identity our game characters are. We want cool characters that are likeable, and are in a good, fun game. A game that doesn't preach at us, and where development staff won't insult us when the game doesn't sell.
True diversity is about building characters based on their psychology, not their skin tone, weight or sexual orientation. The opposite would essentially be reproducing prejudices, which is exactly what those lecturing on higher morals are doing.
On the other hand, I do care a bit that the executives are forcing white people out. That's a little weird, and weirder yet to ignore this to be like, "I really don't mind that they do this..."
None of this makes fuck-all difference if the game's good. In this case, the game sucks so dipshits wanna insert their own bullshit justifications. Pathetic.
I grew up in a village with a population of barely 1000 people. I lived about an hour from the capital and used to be amazed whenever we went to visit my cousin who lived in the big city. What I realize now more than ever, is that my experience growing up was that all the diversity and unique individuals I knew from my village, colored my impression of the city. I presumed that it would be every bit as dense with characters and folks with unique experiences and personalities: Except, that was never the case. Most people you'll meet in the city have repressed themselves to fit into a larger group. The diversity and unique traits are traded in exchange for conformity and a bloated self of togetherness. Your culture, is everyone's culture. Your ideas are never unique. You consume indian, japanese, kenyan, Fish and chips, hamburgers and whatever else. But which of these things actually define a person? None of them truly do. You see, in the city, people define themselves with labels. In the village, people are defined by their experience and how that has shaped them in their life. I knew a guy called the "tarbeast" a guy known as "Saudi-benny" (who was not middle-eastern whatsoever), "coach" and many more. THIS is diversity. These are actual traits. Where your stick your genitals or what you get stuffed, how you dress or what you listen to are just useless, vain labels that ultimately, tells you nothing about YOU. These people who made Concord, have reduced themselves to little more than a label and their every step on the way in creating an immersive experience, reflects that.
I remember seeing the xbox showcase a while back and everytime there was a game with “diversity” in it people would comment “DEI trash” or “woke” things like this and then the showcase showed the new Marvel’s Blade trailer and everyone was soo excited for it. I don’t believe gamers hate diversity, gamers just want cool characters, well written characters and an amazing story.
exactly look at overwatch when it came out nobody was mad that every character were from everywhere in the world cuz there were all cool and interesting
People who complain about DEI aren't anti-DEI, it's just that they can see through the corporations and activists who push ideological purity based on DEI onto audiences at the expense of actually making products people want to buy, and they are too tired of arguing with those corporations and activists when accused by them of being "rightwingers"/"bigots"/whatever for refusing to buy the things that promote that ideology to make any attempt at correcting them. Because if being pro-DEI means being politically aligned with the developers of a game like Concord, no sane person will ever want to identify as pro-DEI.
diversity has just been given such negative connotations because of activists who cant make a good game to save their life. So now when its mentioned people just assume "shit game made by activists". Same with live service games, they CAN be good as helldivers 2 proves, but when the average gamer hears "live service" they think predatory business practices and a priority on the game milking their wallet. Nobody cries "woke" at Samuel L jackson's characters, or God being played by morgan freeman in Bruce almighty. Because they're well written and the priority isnt "lets make a black character", its "make a good character" and then A black guy is chosen for the role. Natural diversity is amazing, forced diversity is just soulless box ticking.
@@declancampbell1277this. Back then the characters were written amazingly you barely care what they looked like. The characters were written well and their race didn’t really matter it wasn’t a big deal they were just cool. Nowadays it feels like diversity is used as checkbox or as a shield for criticism when they write terrible characters. Many people wouldn’t mind a diverse characters especially if they were written well. Unfortunately there’s been common moments where the diverse character felt more like a checkmark then an actual character and were written terribly. I can’t stand when a character won’t shut up about talking about their race/sexuality like it’s their only defining trait. Ff16 did a good job adding a gay character that didn’t mention his sexuality 24/7 and made him a badass with some interesting personality . What also was good is that yes he had gay moments but they didn’t treat like it’s a big deal
@@Yoshixandir I use cyberpunk as the perfect example of diversity done right. Multiple minority character in prominent roles, multiple sexualities on show, even an openly trans character which is rare even among the woker games. Do you hear a single person cry woke about that game? no, because even though those diverse characters exist, they're so much more than just a label you'd slap on them. "doesnt talk about it 24/7" is probably the largest part of it, and it shows the lack of nuance woke shows have. "This character is [Insert group name], they will constantly bring it up, every joke they tell will reference it, and even if not we'll make it incredibly apparent in other ways even if it comes across as racist". Yosuke from the new AC comes to mind, with rap beats kicking in when combat is initiated. I'd almost call it racism lol, which is the "woke" crowd in a nutshell. Racism with good intentions.

I am actually somewhat hopeful, given Jim Ryan is fully on the way out, and Hideaki Nishino is taking lead from interim CEO Totoki. Herman Hulst is still there, but I think getting leadership back in Japanese hands bodes well. Concord would have been fully a Jim Ryan and Hulst era thing, as it took I think six years to make. But, as behind as it is, PS2 emulation is finally fully releasing, which is something Ryan was completely dismissive of, and must have been pushed to the forefront recently. Also, releases like Stellar Blade even having prominence in the store, and development support (Japanese support) while TLOU 2's multi-player getting canned seems like a shift, however you might feel about those particular properties or their respective quality. They have A LOT of catching up to do, and it will require a ton of meaningful and aware engagement to earn back good will from the core and long tail Playstation customer base.
5:57 I think we let them all know what we want based on the success of Black Myth Wukong, which came out around the same time. It doesnt necesarrily have to be copy and paste, or single player. A good story, fun gameplay, and interesting characters, will bring a game a long way. In terms of not primarily single player games, I hope Space Marines 2 delivers.
As a black man I disagree. The whole diversity thing has proven to be completely unnecessary. It's not a check box. These people act like it was such an issue when it never was cause we already had games with people of color and both genders. Just worry about telling a good story and selling a game THAT ACTUALLY WORKS.
@@ShadowKusano Good to hear. I agree that this looks like it is coming down to a mere checkbox. It was never a problem for me because I never relied on the main character to be like me, and I am more of the Hispanic persuasion. My issue is with forced and shallow diversity, not diversity as a whole. A diverse cast won't score extra points from me, but it won't be a total deal breaker either. But if a dev is practically relying on it, it's not looking great to me, even more so if they are using it as a shield against criticism, because that is some weak sauce. I like to let the product do the talking.
@@lmno567I agree many time it just feels like a shallow representation. They don’t give the character a purpose to exist and what I do not like is sometimes how badly written the character that is diverse is represented. Some of these developers follow common stereotypes to try to appeal to what they think is proper representation but many times it comes off as insulting. And like you said some of them uses it as a shield for any criticism despite many time why people didn’t like it is how badly implemented or written the character is
I would say certain developers emphasising diversity as a selling-point is the problem. That is like Burger King advertising they have put toenail clippings in their fries.
I think Sony wasn't even aware of this acquisition, it's mostly SIE using their acquisition funds for things that don't make much sense and people lose their jobs because of how they spend their money.
@@panzer00 the fact that they bought the whole studio for millions of dollar (probably with performance based contract for management) WHILE IN DEVELOPMENT, looked at the game and GREE LIT the game to be released (because they are the publishers, the ones with the right to sell the game) makes this mess Sony's fault too
@taejonghwang does it really, though? You have no idea what went on. It is very easy to blame Sony when you are ignorant. Sony bought FW a year ago - Concord started development 8 years ago. Sony had literally nothing to do with Concord, they bought FW because of the talent. Which FW does have talented developers and artists, regardless of the design philosophy of Concord.

The types of people that make games like Concord are the same people that are running all of the truly passionate game developers out of the industry. Nobody wants to work alongside someone that actively seeks out chances to be offended.
Thank you for the sincere take on the Concord situation. But these game devs are not here to create entertainment. these gaming journalists are not here to report gaming news. they are here to change culture. you may notice that they are also in the movie industry and the education system. you may also notice that they support one political party over another. they are here to shape the future generation through entertainment media.
Not if we have anything to say about it. You are absolute right. However, we have artists in good faith who are trying to create for the right reasons. We will have to fight to keep the ship going in the right direction.
Its seen most obviously with games journalism. A lot of the people involved in it dont even play video games, they're just their to parrot activist bullcrap
Worst part of all? Gollum failed cause the Daedalic Entertainment was bought by a company what forced the studios of making "AAA" game, knowing the studio only did point-and-click adventure games, and only at the tenth of the budget of a normal AAA game, and latter fired them all. Daedalic Entertainment was literally was set-up to be closed after Gollum, regarles of being success or not.....Concord's devs has no such excuse. They had the budget, they had the time, and the talent, and Sony at their back. And they still failed
You are EXACTLY what the Gaming Industry needs, Brother! This is possibly the best and most honest video I have ever watched on TH-cam! I commend you on being a total legend! Stay awesome!
Thank you! I think it's incredibly important for industry insiders like yourself to speak up about the current trajectory of gaming developement. Especially this year there has been so much pushback from players and youtube reviewers, yet devs and studios seem to disregard it as a "vocal minorities".
I greatly appreciate this. As a gamer, it is always nice to see a mature, professional, and adult response in the public discourse. This video is exactly what is needed.
Gamers are not stupid. They can tell when a game is made to be fun for the player or if the developer has other intentions. For some reason, some developers and publishers do not understand this.
Black Myth Wukong was welcomed because it came from a place of tradition, culture, and authenticity. You can literally see the reverence the developers have for the ancient Chinese novel in the game. Weird things are welcomed if they are authentic and presented well.
"Great video, man. You're the first to approach us genuinely, and we truly respect what you've done here. Now we can listen. But to those who think they should belittle us for voicing our concerns-we have no interest in hearing from you. You should leave the industry and find something else to do because it's clear you don't like gamers and have no respect for the industry."
Something in the gaming industry needs to change, and the gamers need to be more vocal about it. It's not just games like Concord and Dustborn. Similar to modern Hollywood, they use nostalgic titles to draw people in, only for it to be a mediocre version of said product, with a political stigma attached to it. With the success of Stellar Blade, The First Descendants, and now Black Myth: Wukong, it's becoming more and more evident that people are sick of Western gaming, they want cool tough guys, like the monkey king or Solid Snake, and hot femme fatals, like Eve or Bayonetta, all that, with fun gameplay and a decent story. THAT'S what real gamers want. All the devs are doing instead is perpetuating negative stereotypes for gamers who don't probably care about that politics and just want to play their favorite game franchises, on top of being very hostile and negative towards their fanbase for not liking said product. For me, it was Saints Row and Mortal Kombat... I am glad, though, that you took the time to speak on this, and I hope you have a lot of success in the future.
He's the best LIKE A BOSS ever, and he's right in every points, i don't know he's job, but sure he could be the best gaming studios CEO Black Myth Wukong is an good example of that gold era when playstation got the best.

After weeks of having seen so many aggressive reactions to this game and others like it, especially Concord and the recently released Dustborn, it's so dang refreshing hearing a much MUCH more adult and professional response to this whole controversy out of all these other rage bait TH-camrs throughout the last month and so, especially from one such SmashJT who I subscribed to and got really sick of the constant output of said rage bait content as of late. And while I wasn't too harsh on Concord when it comes to the gameplay itself, especially as my experience with it came from the beta and that's it, the fact that it was in development for as long as the first Overwatch game was released before being annoyingly replaced by its "sequel" really doesn't help it much with having the impression of being a title that was copying a popular hero shooter such as that. And with how much gaming and media in general had been infested by this pronoun neutral garbage and then some, it really ends up making me pine for the days when such BS wasn't so annoyingly commonplace more and more. I continue to wish for the better days of gaming back in the 2000s and even 2010s to a certain extent.😓
Did Overwatch 2 totally replace the first game? I didn't realize. I hope we find some way to more forward in media (movies, shows, games) where this sort of superficial social justice stops dominating the conversation. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.
i think you dont often see more nuanced takes on things because every gamer who dislikes the DEI "woke" stuff already knows exactly what the issues are. Its an "in" word for us that isnt really well understood by the others. They just assume its a "bigoted" thing because they think we're insulting diversity, which couldnt be further from the truth.
Pathetic.
@@nrf82 Dude, I think you nailed it.
this is the kind of pushoever attitude that let lefties take over gaming and turn it woke.
You know coach that’s wild bro, did you also know ellis and nick? Or rochelle?

Hello, game dev student here.
This is quite comforting to see. For the last 24 hours, my feed has been flooded with this IP and Dustborn. Hearing about backlash and hate from gamers and devs because of the hot topic of social inclusivity and diversity alike really shook me up a bit from my memorial weekend break from classes. You really helped me with checking facts and how to learn from not only awful PR from a studio, but also keeping myself as a gamer in check and not invest in torches, pitchforks, and the combination of Twitter/X and a online ego fedora.

Now that's what I call pouring salt, jalapeñoa, banana pepper, and gasoline over the wound.
It's harsh yet brutally and truthfully honest.
It's kind of sad that Sony and Firewalk studios decided to attack customers rather than taking the criticism and improving their game. Honestly, I never paid attention to concord because I don't have a PS5 and I don't care much for live service pvp in general. The only ones that I thought were decent and fun were Fortnite and SW: hunters(I will say I wish the menu navigation was better) because the both run well and they are free to play. Concord from what I'm seeing reminds me of that crappy Suicide Squad KTJL game that was also live service. And 40 dollars too?! For 30 dollars I could go to humble bundle and buy 85% of the Resident Evil games for steam. For 40 dollars I bought both Freedom planet 2 and Pizza tower for switch.

Devs had all feedback they needed. They chose to see it as harassment and attacks on them. I believe Sony also had feedback on their radars, as beneficiary, and they also chose to ignore it - they've been doing poor work with people feedback recently in general. Reforming their departments responsible for feedback and audience interaction from normal people and not iDEIts is a nice touch. Great vid man.
And I'm telling you - they will not learn from this and will try to push some crap in the next title. They'll just kill this one to save on future losses and be done with it.
Sadly, you are right. It is tough to right the ship in these kinds of situations. It takes a major movement to create change, but hey, we all banded together and got rid of John Riccitiello,, former CEO of Unity.
You can tell 'woke' devs do no market research, but they will pay for narrative consultants who tell them what they want to hear. 'Woke' devs are bound to their Ideologues and will not change. If a games company is to survive and thrive, the activists have to be expelled.

4:25 I would argue instead that diversity won't make a bad game better, but a developer using it as a defense will make it worse.
That's a very reasonable statement. I can agree with you on that.
That is like Burger King advertising they have put toenail clippings in their fries.
this applies to all media in the entertainment industry as well
Sony went from Walkman to "Woke, man".
Hahahaha, you're killing me.
I think Sony wasn't even aware of this acquisition, it's mostly SIE using their acquisition funds for things that don't make much sense and people lose their jobs because of how they spend their money.
Sony had nothin to do with the development of Concord though, Probably Monsters did. Sony bought FW while Concord was in development.
The censor glasses go so hard ngl. Loved the video, the script, the maturity, and the critical unbiased message that left me with a lot more to think about.

You did it! You found a positive aspect about Concord.
Gollum even had more active players at launch than the full price Concord
Worst part of all? Gollum failed cause the Daedalic Entertainment was bought by a company what forced the studios of making "AAA" game, knowing the studio only did point-and-click adventure games, and only at the tenth of the budget of a normal AAA game, and latter fired them all.

Concord is officially dead as of this post. They should have listened to you.
