- Giant cell arteritis (Temporal arteritis) is a vasculitis (inflammation of vessels)...Symptoms include Headache, Pain, vision problems (I can't see), shoulder pain,...etc. Diagnosis is with ESR, and confirmed with a temporal artery biopsy...Treatment is with glucocorticoids to prevent blindness (vision loss).

Happy I found you. I’m going in for a biopsy in a few days but started 60mg prednisone right after my first Dr appt. It looks like my doctor is on the right track. My ESR was 120 mm/hr and has been lowered to a more normal value of 2 mm/hr. Keep up the great work!!!

What about a 30 yr old male who thinks he has this? Have every symptom except I've been having this problem since 18, worried its something else cause its messing with my mind pretty bad, confused, undeserved outbursts, keep kinda forgetting where I am for a few seconds at a time
Also, my ESR has always been normal. Only red flags for me were elevated CRP for 5+ years, elevated IgG, but still within the normal range, and elevated ACE & fibrinogen. No one took me seriously, even after the rash and bleeding, but when my joints swelled up, and they could see the problem, that’s when the diagnosis came.

I’ve recently been diagnosed with temporal arteritis, and it it took 3 doctors to finally diagnosed it because of my age and race. The biopsy was painful, but the steroids are helping with the inflammation.

Medicosis Perfectionalis thanks so much. I am currently under the care of a vascular surgeon and I have an appointment with a rheumatologist next week. I’m staying on top of it, especially being that I’m only 49, I might as well learn to deal with it and minimize the complications that could possibly arise.

I was diagnosed nearly 3 years ago with temporal arthritis I was put on steroid straight away. My blood test was very bad. Then I had biopsy as well but I didn’t felt any pain. The 65 mg steroid made me a lots of troubles even heart enlargement slowly I was taken off steroid and I get injection Tocilizumab 1/ weekly for a year. And a was put back steroid again just very slow dose. I have blood test every tree month and seeing my doctor
Why was the biopsy painful? I having a Temporal Arthritis,and I had biopsy I didn’t felt anything ,, the needle what they used for numbing was nearly invisible,, it’s took close to 30 minute ,and went so quickly,they was talking ,laughing, and absolutely no pain ,, Did they used numbing injections?

Thank you for a video I was misdiagnosed a first and get wrong medication for my GP , The pain worsened,so I went to the hospital ,after the blood test,even I wasn’t allowed to go home ,, and straight away was given 65 mg prednisone,shortly after the pain disappeared,, and I was checked head to toe and had my biopsy test ,I spent 9 days in a hospital ,Come home without any pain , I just forget that’s happened December 2019 ,, I still on steroids but only 5 mg and I have blood test every 3 months ,also checking my liver as well ,, And seeing my doctors every 3 months ,,, Still your video is very useful ,, thank you for sharing with us ,, 🙏❤️Sanding best wishes for you from Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺🤗❤️

@@FomitesHi thank you for your question A m 70 old young😁I was 65 wen I get this autoimmune disease. After taking steroids 4 years and 1 year I get injections. After it I had a 1 year without any problem but recently started having problem with my eyes and terrible pain in my tight arm and leg. I m still under observation just a mont ago I had blood test it’s wasn good. But doctor didn’t give medication because I had virus. My next blood test a week time and the test result will be a same will put back to the steroids. Thank you again you asking how a m Hope your heat is okay ? How is the winter is over there ? Probably cold ? Here is not to bad. 😊 Enjoy test of your days 😊🤗

I have just been diagnosed with GCA and PR. I have already no sight in my left eye. Been on cortisone for 2 weeks Now on 30000 D3, 200 K2, magnesium and zinc for 2 days. Can already feel and see the improvement. Also need to be in sun over the hottest time if the day fir 40 minutes.

I noticed two weeks ago a lump near my left temple where its concave. I thought maybe it was a bug bite or a pimple but it has not gone away. More recently i noticed in my right temple as well but its not as large the left temple. Could it be the recent stress i have been having due to the heart palpations caused by SVT which started in the end of August?
I have PMR and I likely have GCA, not for sure yet, seeing the opthamologist tomorrow, started prednisone this week. I’m 45! This started when I was 40, so while I do have grey hairs, I wouldn’t classify myself as “elderly” 😉

I feel like this may match what is happening to me. Hopefully you read this before my DR appt tomorrow. I am 53 white American (some Scandinavian decent). A few weeks ago I was doing a Indoor Rowing 1/2 marathon. When I got home the right side of my forehead looked slightly swollen and the artery was pulsating. Then next day it was better, but I have had a headache on and off in the same area for the last few weeks. And I will feel like I have a fever, but when I check my temp is normal.

Normal ESR should never be used to exclude GCA and proceed STAT to steroids and then confirm w/ TEMPORAL ARTERY BIOPSY.☺️

My Temporal Arteritis was diagnosed by my optician! I had caught Covid and the headaches started as I started to test negative for Covid so after a couple of weeks of suffering headaches of varying intensity I went to see my optician in case there was something wrong with my eyes that was causing the headaches. He asked me if my jawbone hurt when aim was eating and when I told him it was he told me to see my Doctor immediately. By that evening I was at my local hospital, the diagnosis was confirmed and I was on steroids. Currently down to 6mg daily and reducing by 1mg every four weeks.
How are you doing now? I hope you're feeling better.

This video sounds like it hardly impacts men. Ratio is 2 to 1 women to men. I had pain, fever chills all following a virus. Also has visual problems, such as double vision. Very high ESR as well as CRP. While color Doppler ultrasound was negative, biopsy was positive. Fortunately my rheumatologist started me early on steroids. Currently on 60mg of prednisone and .6ml of methotrexate subcutaneously. Starting Actemra soon. Suffered for several weeks because PCP thought it would “work itself out”. You have to be vigilant in getting a diagnosis.
Wow I like the way you explain the GCA thank you so much me too 5 Doctors had hard time to diagnose it until my Neurologist Dr referred me to Rheumatologist Dr who start same day the high dose cortisone 60 mg/ day for 1 week then go down 10 mg each week and starting doing bloods test X-rays a lots to check for information and arthritis then emergency biopsy because I start having vision problems in left eye go blind for 5 to 7 mn then vision comes back back and forth like this for almost 2 months so tomorrow I’m having finally my biopsy

Doctor, Ive been on Predizone for 2 days 3 times a day 60mg total per day. I suffered far to long months of headaches I wanted to go to ER so many times but this health care system is such a rip off you go to emergency room and what do they do? Make you wait for 5 hours to be seen and this is San Diego I figured they would go away they never did and I am worried. My question is: how long until my scalp is not sore and hurting? The meds helped (not completely) with the headaches but my scalp is sore and the headaches are not gone as well as I hoped. Could I have permanently damaged my brain and eyes (which have gotten blurry too when your 61 I dont know what is normal sight loss or what I never thought I would live this long frankly did many crazy stunts on cars motorcycles considered being stuntman but didnt pay enough. Any advice for me? I did write some comments you may not like but if you reply and address the bye bye maybe I will delete them as it sounds like your a new father talking like that Im curious are you? Hi! I’m NOT a dr but I do have Tak. I understand the scalp pain, headaches, the “devil’s tic tac” (aka prednisone), high doses of prednisone & vision loss.
Get a excellent team of drs together. Rheumatology (Team Lead dr), Cardiology, Pulmonology, Vascular Surgeon, & Ophthalmologist (2nd most important & for me the hardest to find).
Don’t be afraid to fire a dr who is not on your side or will not work with ALL of your drs. Be proactive! Know & understand
Know ALL the side effects of ALL your meds. Especially prednisone!!! It will save your life & vision but destroy your body.
Run ANY new meds my your team lead dr. You would be surprised how it can effect your disease.
Your Rheumatologist will be your best friend. Have a plan of action. Make a plan with your dr before going to the ER.
It might help cut your ER visits down.
IE: I was on an infusion which later was found to cause heart attacks. I was having chest pains & going to the ER 2xs a month for 8 months. Everything came back normal every time. I started tracking my heart rate. I noticed a spike. I was laughed at by the ER drs but I got the last laugh. I was right & it was 1 yr prior to Apple releasing their device to track your heart rate. I refused the infusion after a 9 months & another test came back normal. Did some research to find it was the infusion. Now before going to the ER for chest pains (or another reason l), I have a plan of action. If I still need to go, I call the on call dr & have them call the ER ahead of my arrival. I’m tired of not being taken seriously. I have a voice & rights. I use it.
As you can probably tell, I’ve been through a lot. It’s been a 9 1/2 yr “diagnosed” journey. I was symptomatic for 30yrs before I temporarily lost my vision & almost died.
Due to Tak, other autoimmune diseases have popped up. It’s frustrating but normal. I’ve had 3 scary things during this time period. I’m dealing with the 3rd this week. However, knowledge is power. Being proactive is power. Knowing you are not alone is power. Most importantly, & Tak does NOT define you. Find the humor & lesson.
Again I’m NOT a dr. Being in your 60’s, please talk to your dr about trying to stabilize your Tak without prednisone. Using prednisone as an emergency only. It will take a long time to taper off. The side effects of high prednisone at any age is scary but even worse if you are older. I broke both hips 12 days apart & developed cataracts within 3-5 months in both eyes.
I hope you see this post & it helps you or someone else. I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through. Best wishes

I mentioned the time it took to diagnose me and he was taken back and since then has treated me much better I know he knew and for 2 years he didnt order any blood tests even I cant believe it then on the prednisone falling mental problems I didnt know good from bad care I am off all the meds except the methotrexate once a week I hate to sue people I let so many go but he was just F ing with me , my life I told him I couldn't take much more of this ask about right to die still nothing prednisone and another anti depressant wow I am off all that the weight has not come off even he said my face I CAN HARDLY RECOGNIZE YOU YET DIDNT DO MUCH BUT GIVE ME DRUGS AND FOR !( TO "$ MONTHS MY LIFE SPIRALLED OUT OF CONTROL I JUST SOLD MY HOME WITH OCEAN VIEWS AND LOST ALMOST EVERYTHING THUS SOLD HOME sorry caps stuck was should I do? Wow! I really dropped the ball! I’m sorry. I lost my dad & we moved. Please accept my sincere apology.
We traced my symptoms back to when I was 13yo. My disease leveled up at 43yo & I came within 2 weeks of going permanently blind & dying. The disease didn’t show up in my bloodwork until I was 45 1/2yo.
When you ask about the timeframe, all I can say is it’s a very difficult disease to diagnose. Mine was only found after temporary blindness. All my other symptoms could have easily been blown off (I even blown off a lot of it) or a hypochondriac.
I went through a ton of tests & it suxed.
I’m 11yrs in & knowing my body has helped. Make sure you know all the side effects of all the medication you take & have a game plan if you have any GCA or Tak symptoms that might send you to the er. For me it’s heart attack symptoms & stroke symptoms. I don’t panic. I have a game plan with my dr.
The weight gain probably from the steroids. That has a ton of horrible side effects that you have to know about. Personally, due to the weight gain, rage, cataracts, & bilateral broken hips, my dr will only put me on steroids if it’s an emergency. Any dr wanting to put me on it has to get permission from my lead Dr. I also have to take another medication to offset the rage. My dr will pull me off bc it’s a brutal drug. I keep him informed.
My lead Dr took over my meds when I had a tooth extraction bc I had a blood infection. The dentist wasn’t happy but he doesn’t understand the disease.
I’m NOT telling you any of this to scare you or anyone else. I want people to use their voice, ask questions, don’t live in fear & don’t make the same mistakes I did.
The best advice I can give anyone is don’t look at everything at once. I only deal with my symptoms as they come up. If I looked at everything wrong, I would never leave the house.
I had the sedation test and it came back 55mm. My neurologist ordered MRI and MRV and it came back normal. I still have the temporal headaches. I am lost. I don,t know what is causing the headache. I dont have sinuses.

Thank you, had biopsy, been on prednisolone, had to go back to the hospital with all the sypmptoms after prednisolone ran out, they took blood tests and gave me more prednisolone, these too have ran out, however my doctor refuses to give me prdnisolone. So now waiting for an appointment with doctor and waiting for another possible biopsy according to hospital, just no prednisolone. Surely my condition is serious?

I may have this inflammation was found in my blood still waiting for biopsy but doctors already started me on steriods for 5 days which did help but pains come back. Trouble is i got a 4 and 6 year old so i thought it was normal me having headaches, i got blind spots as well im worried now

Shoot! You've just described me. I am 57 and i have temporal headache that increases when i cough and sneeze. I went to the ER and they did a non-contrast CT scan and everything was normal, and idk if this test will show GCA. I am following up with a neurologist.
You’re doing the right thing by talking to your doctor...Ask them about the ESR test result.
Wrong doctor. You should see a rheumatologist
Neurologists are… difficult specialists. Don’t bother going to one until you have the definitive rheumatologist stamp of approval. They will badger you about why you are wasting their time.

What if you are a Male, young, and have both sides of the veins on forehead? I am sick today, and just saw these veins today. Never had them before. Does a cold cause this too? I do have headaches.

Can you get this while you're young? How long do you know before you have this?
It's possible to get it at any age...It's just unlikely if you're young. But, when you notice these symptoms (jaw claudications, pain over the temple, ...etc), you should seek medical attention right away.

Wondering if this is something I could have. I'm only 28 but have bulging arteries in my temples along with occasional headaches. My vision has been declining over the past 3 months. Everything is appearing a lot darker than normal. I've had vision tests that all come back normal though. Along with a CT scan and an MRI that were both also normal. Not sure what else to do but I'm losing my vision.

I recently had a patient diagnosed with this…but it was a misdiagnosis. Ended up being a parasite. Really interesting case.

I am 50 and I have every symptom of this but my esr level was normal. I am getting an ultrasound done Thursday and am on steroids. Is it possible to have a sinus infection at the same time?

ESR can be normal in about 15% of patients.

I have been diagnosed with this disease very frightened that I could go blind I lost my vision but not totally my vision was crossed but with treatment it came back

I'm 43 and was told I may have GCA and polymyalgia even though its very rare for someone of my age, I was started on steroids this morning and they are absolutely magic things :)

@@MedicosisPerfectionalis, my GP who is a rheumatologist at the hospital handed my referral letter to the head rheumatologist and she said I'm far too young and its virtually unheard of and she took me off the steroids and the asprin and if the pain in my head happens again to tell the GP immediately (oh yeah like on a weekend!!) and I'm to have an urgent referral and scan, so thats what I'm having (unless the rheumatologist has changed her mind about it!!)
But also i took prednisone for a bee sting and it took my headache a way instantly, but the doctor will not give me more until i go to the emergency, but I will not waste my time, plus my jaw does not hurt to eat, I don’t have all those symptoms, the only problem is when I wake up, then I start to get the same headaches everyday

Investigate supraorbital nerves.
Im 24, have had constant sharp pain the right side above ear but a little to the right. The pain has been 24/7 for 9 days now accompanied by temporary blurred vision in my right eye. I went to the doctor twice and was diagnosed with neuropathy the first time and tension headaches the second. Meds haven't seemed to help at all but there's are moments where it almost feels cured but there's still a slight pain, scalp is also tender. Ice packs seemed to help best. The pain is as if I took a slight blow to the particular location but for a 110% fact there was no injury. Also I have neck pain but neck uncomfortability has been normal for me for about 1 year. Doing things such as talking loudly, smiling , blinking, opening my mouth wide and raising my eyebrows all trigger the particular location in my head to feel slightly more numb. Wtf is wrong with me. P.s the pain never moves and I'm not as hungry, also I cannot stress enough that there has never been a moment where the pain wasn't there, the pain isn't severe about a 4/10 when it flares up and a 2/10 85% of the time, it just never ceases.

I was diagnosed with it yesterday. Im now on steroids for the foreseeable.
All I can say is it is excrutiatingly painful. In a few hours I am going for a brain scan. And I'm in my bed wide awake because of the steroids Life is a roller coaster but hey, at least no one is shooting at me these days 🙃

I’m sorry for your diagnosis. Please find out EVERYTHING you can about the “devil’s tic tac” aka steroids side effects. Especially the rage, weight gain, cataracts, & broken bones. Please work closely with your dr. I’m not trying to scare you. I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through. Breaking both hips 12 days apart isn’t fun. All of this happened less than 9 months on steroids. Look for a great ophthalmologist too so they can manage your eyes. I’m 11 years in & im still here. I came within 2 weeks of going blind & dying.
Wishing you all the best the steroids caused many awful symptoms for me also like sleepless nights , hair loss and more but so far so good

I had this disease when I was 17 years old. They couldn't diagnose on the left side and they didn't believe me and they were kept waiting. At the age of 18, it popped on the right side. It got inflamed in 2 veins. I couldn't get a diagnosis for 2 years because of the ego of the doctors. It was just diagnosed

Is it possible for a kid to have this? I am currently 13 and I had sinusitis for about a week now then I took a nap because of the sinus headache I was feeling and then I woke up with worse headache. I feel the pain on the veins on both side of my head and beating like crazy.

I have chronic sinus and just suddenly got temporal arteritis. I'm female over 50. I can say the symptoms are very different although both involve the temples, the big differences is the vision loss and severe jaw pain in temporal arteritis. Hopefully I caught it early so my maybe my vision in my right eye will improve.

I may have a neurological problem then. I always have a weird pulsating feeling in my temple definitely my right temple. Doesn’t really hurt but it’s really annoying and scary. It’s actually very often. I usually have them on one side of my head. I have blur in eyes and my eye doctor even wants me to get it looked at. I am going to get it checked out but it takes a while just to see a neurologist. Also I have Elipesy and have weird feeling in my neck if I take a nap. Meanwhile I’m in my early 20s so this is all confusing to me. It happened after I started my metoprolol which is for my SVT

@@helloworldd8252 Yes same, after 1st pfizer i had my arm expand 2 weeks later, suspected blood clot, since then more random issues, like headaches muscle twitches, tingling/pins and needles and so on, I got a cardiac MRI but was all clear, possible anxiety-related symptoms too, either way the vaccine sent me down a hypochondriac rabbit hole, Almost 5 months later I am healing as it had gotten better, main thing is keep exercising and you'll feel better, as for the Temporal arteritis i think its unlikely we do have it, monitor it for a few days and see if it gets worse, we need more than 1 symptom before we try diagnose ourselves
@@benybe123 oh man, similar situation! Thank you, I’m glad everything has gotten better for you. I was hospitalized as well and everything came back normal. They claim it could be anxiety related issues which I do have but then they indicated I had SVT, and then another another type of tachycardia. I started having pain in my chest so they told me to go see a lung doctor. Now I have so many hospital and doctor bills just for it all to come back fine. I was told if it’s more then one body part hurting at the same time then it’s a sign of something more serious. Im going to take your advice and wait a little on the head exam out to see if it goes away. Exercising does help a lot

First of all,thanks for the info. I have a few concerns. im a male,21.I have had pain around my right eye and occipital region for about 2.5 months now but lately it has gotten worse.Currently my major problems are excessive watery right eye,persistent one sided headache, feeling of tightness around my eye and right side of head, and a bit of vision changes not much but i am afraid of the blindness which it causes.Also my right eye is always watery these days. I am typing this because it has really started affecting my daily routine now and im finding it too hard to let go of it and concentrate.
Check your temporal pulses on both sides. It’s by your ear/jaw joint. If you can’t find one or both, it’s a possibility, but if you can find both, not GCA.

Doctor the video covered everything great but I am worried about my eyesight as I aam up (again) at 3 am with headaches I DID NOT LIKE THE BYE BYE AND HI FOR YES ITS STUPID AND THIS IS MY SIGHT WERE TALKING ABOUT I CANT HANDLE LIVING IN THE DARK THE THOUGHT SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME. Totally agree I am up at 3am again I started the predizone two days ago its helping but my scalp is still very sore I suffered far to long for months hoping it would go away. I fell out of bed and hit my head then the terrible headaches began I hope I didnt wait to long as the med works fast I am worried again and really didn't like that. Aaron are you alright? Is that what you had? and if so how long before your scalp wasn't sore and the headaches went away? And how long did you suffer before seeing a doctor? I went to a doctor and he said it’s actually due to grinding my teeth at night! Also to have this - the pain tends to be only on one side. I am also younger. It could have been heavy drinking from the weekend before also. Don’t lose hope. You might not have this. Hope this helps.

Hey Aaron how are you doing now? Did you ever figure out what the problem is? I have headaches on the right side of my head close to my temple which presents as a dull pain. It comes & goes. Might be fine for a few days then out of the blue I'll get a headache. Its very random but I noticed twice recently that the headache went away after I ate. Went to hospital yesterday & Dr said I might have Giant Cell Arteritis or bruxism from clenching teeth. Did you get to the bottom of your issue?
