John Smith The only real problems are the Marines , there's something off with their recruiting screening process to prevent the bad apples from slipping through the system.
I don't think the Marines are the problem. Yes there needs to be a stricter recruiting process but I met a lot of cool military members there. NHK and the Japanese news have blown the military-Okinawan relationship way out of proportion.
John Smith It's hard to sway public opinion when there's been too many high profile rape/murder cases. For a nearly crimeless island, just a few major incidents are enough to turn people against you. You go along Gate 2 Street and see the endless drunken fights, that's who they represent and project to the passing locals/tourists. I guess using a curfew works, but of all the branch of services, Marines have made a little reputation out of themselves anywhere else you go like in San Diego or Hawaii. In this day and age, using "boys will be boys" won't cut it anymore. It's weird that stuff like this doesn't happen in Guam, maybe the local islander guys are a bit tougher or something. I'm not blaming the local Okinawans/Japanese for being too peaceful/pacifist but maybe if they developed some kind of self defense, it would make some opportunistic people think twice. Being a young age, compounded with alcohol and living on base with a bunch of guys do weird things to them. Unless there's been any instances of local Japanese raping military wives or women, I haven't heard. Just go on Okinawa Craigslist and see the weird shit they post there 😂😂😂 You may go blind scrolling through there. The key thing is that the island is nearly crimeless until you look into many incidents involving military personnel there. The Japanese society is already expected to be "perfect", little incidents of violence is unthinkable to them. I don't know how to fix it. Coming from me, I've been in heated arguments with the base protestors. I'm just neutral on this whole thing and just seeing it from a cultural/human differences. Not really about politics.
1) You say that there has been far too many rape/murder cases but when I look up online, I only see *2* known cases. The rape/murder in 1995 and the rape/murder in 2016. So far, these have been the only ones that account for major world wide news. 2) For the murder in 2016, he wasn't even part of the military. He was a contractor who quit in the middle of training. He even had an Okinawan wife. From the condition of the body, it proves that the murderer wasn't right in the head. 3) I have never heard of the excuse "Boys will be Boys." That just sound like a straw man excuse for the existence of rape culture. 4) The Craigslist portion doesn't really makes sense to this argument because there are weird people. Every where. 5) Okinawa wasn't "crimeless." Annually, Americans only make up 1% to 4% of the crime rate per year and when they are caught, they are deported or get sent to the prisons. On or off base. Just because it is a different country, doesn't make it perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect, crime less country. 6) Saying that the Americans make up 100% of all the crime in Okinawa is just false. If you watch NHK or any other Japanese news source, there are a lot of crime. 7) Gate 2 Street is the red-light district. I do not approve of the amount of drunks there but the tourist wouldn't be near it unless they are going to drink/go to strip clubs too. 8) You say that the Okinawan people are being pacifists/peaceful but if you ever been near the gate during a protest, you will see the opposite. From the Okinawa's calling Americans racial slurs to actual assault. (I'm not saying all Okinawans act this way, but saying that a whole race of people act the same way is ignorant) 9) There has been crimes towards Americans, it just never got spread as widely as the crimes towards the Okinawans. The murder of an American high school kid, Eddie Allshouse, in 2011 and the theft of multiple military ID's from an Okinawan woman was only mentioned in a military newspaper. On NHK, they only briefly or never mentioned it. 10) I honestly think that the reason why Okinawa gets the spotlight is because it became a popular news topic. From anime like *Blood+* which is literally anti-US propaganda where the Americans are vampires to the base being mentioned every day on the Okinawan NHK (which there are clear bias against the bases).
僕はこの街が好きだ。
Is there an English subtitled version anywhere? I would love to watch this.
RicoSeattle I'll make one when it comes out, fellow Seattleite :)
I grew up in Okinawa (and went to school in Kadena) so I wonder if the experiences are the same.
John Smith They make another America in the base, so it is the same no matter where you live.
