I have a 17 year old Brother 1500D sewing/embroidery machine. It is meant to be used as sewing and light embroidery I used it like it was a semi commercial machine for a monogramming business I had. Brother makes virtually indestructible machines and I LOVE them. You will not be disappointed getting a Brother.

Agreed! 12 years with a sewing school and still using some of the first ones I purchased. Every level of machine is made well :)

I'm trying to buy a sewing machine. I'm a beginner. I don't know how much I'll be sewing. But I'm getting conflicting reviews about this model. Some say that this model has too many plastic components in it and that it will not last. They recommended Babylock sewing machines. What do you think?

Plastic it self, seems to start to breaking down after about 10-15 years it seems. This machine, I have had for a few years and many of my students have purchased it and really like. It would serve you well for years and If you are to start sewing alot you would probably enjoy a upgrade every few years. In the end, a sewing machine simply sews seams, the magic of sewing is in how you work with the fabric and patterns to create garments. You could make beautiful things from the simplest of machines.

How does this machine handle thicker fabric along with vinyl bag sewing? Right I’m considering the ST 371 because it has a higher press or foot height?

I wouldn't buy it for heavy duty sewing.
I mainly sew clothes so I am not familiar with the other machines.

Have you ever had timing issue on the bottom thread?

    • @FutureFashionDesigners

I have not, sometimes when that happens that means the bobbin was not wound correctly. It should be very firm if the thread is squishy then it was not wound correctly.

What about thick fabrics as in sewing vinyl bags? Right now I’m concerning the ST 371 because it will sew thicker fabrics?

Will this handle fleece and knit fabrics well?

    • @FutureFashionDesigners

Yes it has stretch stitches on it and even comes with a walking foot. Handles a lot of fabrics well.

My machine (CS6000i) suddenly will not let me change stitching selection no matter what # I select. Have you ever heard of this issue? I am worried that my computer on the machine is messed up.

humm.. never heard of that issue? Have you tried unplugging everything and rebooting it? I will take a look at my machine and instruction book when I am at my studio.

What is the difference between cs-6000 and cs6000i?

Plastic parts looks very flimsy and cheap, I wonder of the quality and life of those parts

Yes, seems that's how things are made now adays. It's pretty sturdy though. And I love that it's very light in weight.
