1) Remember the "curse of knowledge" error. If you use medical/caregiver terms, i.e., "elopement," explain these to the public who might not be familiar with the terms. Saying "flight risk" or a "runner" still leaves some people confused, because that's industry insider lingo.
2) If you have a diagnosis of dementia (or one of the known causes of dementia) AND you are at increased risk of being a danger to yourself or others, you might be a good candidate for Memory Care. That's the first question to ask.
3) Not being independent with eating is, of itself, NEVER a good justification for moving a resident to a locked down unit. There are ways to ensure privacy and dignity besides moving to Memory Care. Making such a move is over the top and less dignified than assisting to feed in a dining room full of residents. Many facilities have a private dining room.
4) Yes, absolutely, many residents are placed in AL or in Memory Care improperly. It's crucial for advocates to understand how and when to push for one or the other.

It's sad that dementia care is necessary, but the truth is, somebody has to provide that care. Yes, I agree that with some people/companies/corporations the motive is mainly money, but the idea of dementia care being a business is both solid and necessary. If there was no profit motivation, very few companies would offer care. The burden is on us as guardians of our loved ones to make sure they get the best care they need.
