I am sorry I could not give you comments sooner. I also live in Chicago and my blueberry bushes, burgundy and Bushwick, both from Maine, did not survive or weakly survived. I got two Tophat this spring but one is severely damaged by fungi. I have been monitoring any further problems since then, and spraying the Neem oil weekly to two stocks. So far the healthier one looks good. But I doubt the damaged one will recover. Probably I will use copper spray during the winter for extra sanitization.
I am in Chicago too, by the lake Michigan, all my roses in pots/large containers died last year, 22-23 season. I think the cold and wind were too much for them. So this year, I have put my roses in large raised beds. My wooden raised beds are protected with one inch thick layer of foam boards. I would heavily protect any rose in a container/pot in Chicago with burlap wraps and bubble wraps.
Love your videos and thank you for the post winter update. I’m in the lower Hudson valley in NY, so I think we have similar climate zone 7a is what I have I believe. As far as container in plants that can be left outside without any protection, I’m not a huge fan of knock out roses in pots as they never seem to do well when just left outside over winter. I will say I have 3 sunny knock out roses, they are yellow and a bit fragrant and they always come back without any issues, no protection at all. They are in 7 gallon grow bags. I think they are hardy to zone 4 which might help explain how they always come back. I also have limelight hydrangeas in pots on my deck that I leave out all winter with no protection and they always come back, hardy to zone 3, strawberries always come back and blueberries too. Sorry can’t speak to blueberry diseases, I’ve been lucky mine are usually very healthy. My mint in pots always come back too.
I think I definitely need to get roses more cold hardy than the one I had if I want it to survive the winter up here. Have they done well for you in grow bags?
Hello! I could talk about blueberries for hours, but one thing I'll say is that I don't trust cold hardiness for dwarf blueberries or any "Southern Highbush" blueberries. Some "hardy" Southern or dwarf varieties claim they can survive in both zone 10 California and zone 5, which makes no sense haha. Southern varieties are also more susceptible to blight and dieback. I would invest in just Northern Highbush blueberries if you do get a new one, cause those thrive in freezing winters and some are hardy down to zone 3. I have heard Top Hat though is a very cold hardy dwarf blueberry. I hope your blueberries do okay once trimmed back!
As far as overwintering in pots, I think it depends on root hardiness. The ground never gets much below 20 or 25F whereas a pot, during a cold snap, can get much colder. I bet it doesn't take much to keep the pots just a little warmer, maybe some kind of insulation (natural or otherwise) on top of the pots to keep them a little warmer than the outside air. The branch browning might also be a response to root death. Mostly guessing here though.
I'm in Chicagoland too, my knockouts are in the ground but my younger ones and my mini roses ALWAYS scare me and I cute them all the way back and I haven't lost one yet (fingers crossed) If I were u, I would hack it down and see of it shoots new branches roses can be ridiculously resilient.
Hey, how are ya? I'm not sure if your blueberry has stem blight or its just cold damage. I would probably cut off the affected parts and then sanitise your pruners before you cut other plants. I'm sorry you lost your rose, this winter was pretty harsh! But its always fun when you lose a plant to think about what new ones you can get. Good growing!
This was awesome to see! I'm in the suburbs, so it's 5b and I've got a bunch of blueberries in pots. I tried overwintering peppers in a greenhouse in the garage and I think they died, but the blueberries are all doing well!

Thank you!! I think the one that still looks good was a northern high bush, so I’ll definitely look for that variety.

Yeah, I think the roses weren’t hardy enough for the winter here in pots. The greenhouse helped a lot with insulation!

With the rose , have you looked at the roots? If they are good , could you not save it somehow? Otherwise loving the video ❤

My blueberries always seem to handle the winters here really well. Raspberries do too!
