Watching Rodney skate is magical, no matter how many times you see it, he's the best of all time.

Honestly in my opinion Rodney is the best skater, and will always be; I started skating because of THPS 2 and he was my favorite character to use. He is the embodiment of creativity and openness, which is the soul of skating. And that Jonny, is the reason why you are one of my top favorite pro skaters, as your style reminds me so much of his, of course, with your own twist.

Rodney Mullen was perhaps literally the only skateboarder who didn't have "a" special move he had like 15 of them. Playing as him in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 should have been nonstop "Ding, Ding, Ding" with 15 varieties. It was a missed opportunity for that game, Rodney should have been an unlocked secret boss who had 15 specials.

For all of you that have the dvd, go to the scene select option, then click "more."
If you push up, you'll move the cursor over the words "Round 3" in the corner. Select it to unlock Rodney and Daewon's parts from rounds 1 and 2!

I'm a BMX freestyler who got a job working at FREESTYLIN' magazine in 1986. My roommates and I practiced at a place in Redondo Beach we called The Spot, every night. Rodney, when staying in Cali with Rocco, would practice on the concrete right next to where road. In late 1986, I think it was October or November, he showed me a half flip underflip. IN 1986. Freakin' amazing. One of the coolest humans I've ever met.

Xavier Cugat (from the star on the walk of fame) was one of the people responsible for the spread and embrace of Latin music in the middle of the 20th century. He was born in Spain, came into his own musically in Cuba, and became an influential band leader (and still also a musician in his own right) in the US.
Music’s always been very important to Rodney, and I guarantee that was not a random choice.

Regarding the dog at 19:15… Rodney’s early nickname was “Mutt”, and there’s dog easter eggs in a lot of his videos. Also, the “Big Dog” song in his Future Primitive part is very unique, then and now, and has trippy lyrics. It contains biochemistry references and describes a mythically large pet dog… “one turd repels traffic. helicopters can’t get in close to neutralize” 😅 I think it was recorded especially for that part.

Even if at my thirties and that I don't skate anymore, Rodney's tricks sometimes come to my mind. He was such a hero for me and apart from the way that he invented most of modern skate tricks, his STYLE still seems fresh today. You can tell from many of his flip thicks that he actually invented them, because of the way he performs them. Nice that you make a contribute to him. BTW: the "Jack Nicholson" thing was a guy who was NOT him, but a guy who pretended to be like him to get money from pictures and stuff. Saw that in another skate channel a long time ago. Love your channel and keep it up. Greetings from Spain :)

Even though they'd already seen it, the few skaters in the audience were shaking their heads in reverence the whole time. The non skaters simply could not appreciate the magic they were witnessing. Rodney made so many of these tricks look wayyy to easy for the layman to comprehend the skill and talent required.

This part is probably the greatest of all time as far as I’m concerned, or tied with a couple others in an “apples and oranges” sort of way.
Practically every Rodney Mullen part that had come out since Future Primitive had become my new favorite, but somehow this one just continued the trajectory into wayyy unmatched virtuosity, science, and athleticism. Also, as always with his parts, the music was perfect and made you think “oh yeah, of course Rodney would pick this” :)
The special features of the DVD also came with two other amazing segments in the special features:
    - a Rodney Mullen retrospective compiled from all of his parts After the Powell Peralta era (basically the videos he had the rights to since he co-owned the companies from then on)
    - a Daewon Song retrospective starting all the way back from when he was a little kid, progressing all the way up to alternate takes from that DVD, all over a Chemical Brothers track that starts out gentle and pleasant and slowly builds into a frenzy. It’s really cool.
    The main section also has:
    - a Chris Haslam part which is of course insane
    - I think the introduction of Ryan Sheckler to the skate world as an extremely talented teenager, not even fully grown yet, already hucking off huuuge gaps
    What a video.
    ALSO
Right up among my alltime favorites is Another DVD from this era of almost: the Daewon / Haslam project ‘Cheese and Crackers’. It’s one of the most creative things I’ve ever seen, and progress deeper and deeper into insanity over the course of the short 25min video. It’s almost what you’d imagine if Rodney was to skate transition.

  • @michaeldanielpaisleyhender399
    @michaeldanielpaisleyhender399 ปีที่แล้ว

I remember falling in love with Rodney’s ingenuity, creativity, technical ability, and personality as a sort of an anti-social intellectual type who broke into mainstream skating because he was simply too good to be ignored or ostracized. It started off with a few tricks of his I saw featured on the old 411 Video Magazine VHS tapes back in the day… then I picked up a couple more old tapes that featured him, and of course later the THPS series, but Round 3 was my favorite part of his. And this was my favorite skate video, along with some of the early Alien Workshop videos, Enjoi’s Bag of Suck, and Lakai’s Fully Flared…
Your English as a second language is really impressive, your skateboarding style and ability is impeccable, and don’t worry about the haters who say that “all you do is try to be a modern day RM” If they think or say that, then either
    1. They’re just trolling.
    2. They haven’t seen enough of your material to know how much more broad the scope of your style and bag of tricks are.
Or 3. They’re jealous, because to them EA Skate games are as close as they’ll ever come to half of what you’ve accomplished on a deck.
    🤝

I'm in my mid-30s. I lost all my DVDs in an accident a few years ago. 90% of my collection were fiction movies and the last 10% were documentaries. In the documentaries only 2 were about skateboarding, an activity I did only like 2 to 5 years in my teenage years in Europe. And obviously Almost Round 3 was the one (the other, I think, was a 411VM in Brazil I don't really know why). This episode is a pillar of History in skate for all the reasons you explained (not only skate-wise).
Honestly I think a lot of us started by seeing Tony Hawk's 900 and playing THPS, but the first name that always comes in my mind is Rodney Mullen. He was in his own bulbe at the right time and he will stay a legend forever.

Looks like with his under flips he uses "bad" tech by kicking down instead of flicking, which gets his foot in position for the under flip. I assume the underflip's upward momentum negates the kick flip's downward

For me - 1st place in All time Skateboard is for Rodney and the second one is for you, Giger because you are one of the few worthy to cast his spells !

I actually have this on physical disc. This part might be the greatest skate part of all time. So many things you absolutely need to slowmo to see what's going on. He makes things look so effortless while landing the most insane stuff so cleanly all the time.
    Rodney is a skating GOD.

I always enjoyed Round 1 part the best. Rodney really embraced his street skating and prove he could of been a huge contender in street. Round 3 was him going back to his freestyle tricks. Dan Corrigan did a similar video explaining the same thing about Rodney misunderstood contributions to freestyle skating!

Those handstand flips are no joke , took me 9 months to land a primo handstand flip sloppy..
    Rodney is on another level

Crazy. Yeah I can see how that would be super hard. When this came out Rodney already had 20 years of practice with those from his freestyle days. That type of skating was dead and buried and Rodney brought it into the street skating culture. I don't care if it's cool or not, those tricks are sick.

I like how stance just went away for Rodney one night while he was thinking about skating. He just "realized it's all in your head". And just like that stance is nothing to him anymore? Dude is an alien.

3:48 Jonny, i think the nose of Rodney's board being squared off has alot to do with this!! Maybe he only does this with a chipped / old deck before throwing it away. U can really see the nose @ 3:10

I remember when that part came put and the awesomeness of it got me stoked. But you didn't really get all of the magic because some of the flics are so quick.
No watching this review with slomo😮. And I have to admit that it is probably 15 years ago I watched this for the ladt time it is hard to explain what I missed back than.

I was first introduced to skating with the Tony Hawk games.
Had almost zero interest in skating myself. I tried it a couple times and was awful.
But learning about Rodney made me become a fan of it anyway. Just as a pure spectator.
    He is an absolute wizard.
So insane that he still has so many NBDs.
And that this video part arguably has never been topped.

5:45 I don't skate but i admire the skill above all othe sports hands down. Except fir R-willys ability to do insane tricks on his bicycle 🚲 hes beyond talented. Ok i digress back to Rodney king mullen 😂 he is just an anomaly in the sport of skate boarding. Everyone is unique in their own way and cant be duplicated, especially Rodney!

This is skateboarding in my opinion and , before we had parks everywhere it made small towns fun.....
Then they put signs up everywhere "NO SKATEBOARDING "
we became criminals in our small college town, which was fine cause running from security made things even better
85 to 92 were the best years , Rodney and his long socks and shorty shorts made us laugh , Natas was my hero ...Its crazy that Rodney became the godfather of tech, changing street forever.
Personally, i love mixing both worlds, skaters who can truly do that are rare.
