Artist: John Ndungu
Gatheri was originally sang in 1997 by John Ndungu. This is the original version before releasing the reggea version in December 2021.
The song is a message of hope to those that feel that God has forgotten them. John Ndungu narrates how a hunger strike affected his childhood. There was no enough food to feed the whole family. They only ate one meal - githeri and go to bed. Being the eldest, he was affected and hurt seeing his siblings suffering because of hunger. His parents were jobless thus could not do anything to help the situation. He prayed with his heart filled with tears for God to remember them. God did hear his prayers and blessed his family. God sent a helper who gave his father a well paying job and left his mother enough money to feed the family. God did not forsake them.

I joined class one when i was 13 years.. tallest than all my teachers. I did upto to University. Before then i was employed kuchunga mbuzi.. 1600 a month.. kuchomwa na jua whole day. Kunyeshewa na kuteseka na njaa whole. Mbuzi ikila shamba ni wewe unalipa.. ikipotea unatafuta ata usiku mzima.. now i can eat anything i want.. and now i have book stores. Have employed some people. This songs rekindles my memory in 1990s, my family was a laughing stock. We were very poor, sometimes we could sleep hungry and non of my abled relatives came to our rescue. God is great we are now okay. I learnt that a poor person is the most hated person for no apparent reason. May God's grace be upon those passing through hardships and may HE redeem them.

After the death of my father everything changed,no food,no money and no one on both dad's and mum's side come to our rescue,it was hard for us plus mum,we had one meal per day bt I thank God for everything
