    Dogs 101 - LOWCHEN -
Raised mainly by the aristocracy, the origin of the Löwchen is surrounded by mystery and controversy. One theory says that the breed originated in countries like Germany, Belgium and France. Another theory asserts that the Löwchen was related to different variations of the Bichon and was originated in the Mediterranean. The third and fourth theory say that they may have been created in Russia or even in Tibet. However, what we do know is that it’s used as a rodent hunter, as a small alarm dog and as a family pet. Although in the XX century, the Löwchen was about to disappear, was included in the Guinness Book of Records for being the most valuable and one of the strangest breeds in the world.

Known also as the mini lion, the Löwchen is a dog that stands out for its long mane and its particular tail. Although there are some variants, the small lion dog weighs between 9 and 18 pounds and stands between 12 and 14 inches tall at the withers. Its coat is silky, dense long and slightly wavy, with a great possibility of colors and combinations. He’s an intelligent, vivacious and attentive dog; with a good bone structure, compact and well proportioned.
Grooming: What could define this dog? His haircut, called "Lion Cut" is his main feature. If you want to opt for this style, you should take him regularly to the canine hairdresser, otherwise you can keep the coat on his entire body. Like the rest of their care, this breed needs frequent grooming.
Temperament: Playful and cheerful by nature, the Löwchen love the company of their human family and hate long periods of solitude. They’re very sensitive, timid, patient, loyal, animated, affectionate, gentle and above all protective dogs with their owners.
Training: Very intelligent and with an incredible ability to learn, Löwchen dogs can be trained very easily. They have an inherent desire to make happy and please their owners, so a positive, patient, loving and fun training is usually quite simple and above all, effective.
Health: Healthy and full of energy the Löwchen, just like many other breeds, can get to suffer from any of these diseases, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation (slipped stifle), cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy.
