It's incredible that she could still sing the pianos that she's so famous for in this case! I've had to sing with laryngitis, and the first thing that goes is the lower end of the dynamic range, because when the cords are swollen, you have to keep extra air flowing or they just stop phonating, right in the middle of a note. I don't hear that at all here....she really knew her voice! As always, BRAVA, Diva!
I think that Beverly had one of the deepest ,gravelly voices of all singers. Listening to the coloratura high wires it is sometimes incomprehensible that she could have spoken in such deep tones. Beverly explained this by saying her father could not abide high pitched girly shrieking and so she toned it down as a child. It remained so until her death. Jim you really know just how to switch on the spotlights and b righten up my day!!!! Thank you.
The Bachelet is especially difficult both technically and musically. La Sills' pacing of tempi is perfection. There aren't many dynamic or tempo indications in the score - check it out and you'll realize what great thought has gone into these gorgeous interpretations .
Good Grief Maestrojimbo! This is what Beverly sounded like when she was ILL? Fantasmogorically stunning! Whats more you were there too...... can you see the green fumes coming through the ethernet? Lucky lucky Jim. Thank you for uploading this, its just the best!
Agreed, and agreed - all of you. What a testimony to technique AND of course, that VOICE of hers. And, truth be told, to her Spirit, which didn't know the word "no" or "can't". Please God, when I get laryngitis, let me sound HALF this good!
Just slightly under pitch every now and again. Sills SICK is better than many of the current crop of "movie star" singers with no voice at all, stick or well. The travesty at the Met this weekend made ME sick.
This is artistry at its absolute finest! What superlatives ARE there to use in the case of Ms Sills that don't sound just plain banal? However, undeniably there is an impeccable technique coupled to an incredible instrument, both driven by that innate sense and ability to become one with the very spirit of the composer and his music! And then there is Mr Wadsworth and a collaboration between the two that is breathtaking and being a singer myself and having had the experience of working with an accompanist that has the innate ability to become one with the singer, as well as those who just don't! This partnership is breathtakingly beautiful! Bravissimi! Thanks Maestrojimbo! Please identify yourself in the Beverly Sills Crazies group once again, this old brain has forgotten who you are, lol.
"...ability to become one with the very spirit of the composer and his music..." That is EXACTLY why I loved Sills so much...it always made me feel that I was hearing whatever she sang for the first time...it was always so emotionally connected.
Exactly! And that was the magic of Ms Sills in comparison to many other divas with distinguished careers, yet they left one feeling cold and disconnected! Apart from the obvious Ms Callas, names like Ms Deutekom and Ms Popp come to mind but there are so many other "famous" divas who sang all the tight notes and yet NEVER "became one with the very spirit of the composer and his music"!
@petelovesbevsills (Shouting through the fumes) Yes, I was quite pleasantly surprised that she sounded so great. She said that the laryngitis only affected her speaking voice ( which was usually quite raspy anyway). Great to hear from you, as always.
Thank you for uploading this magnificent performance. I believe there is a pirated live recording of her singing ‘Als mir dein lied erklang’ by Richard Strauss out there somewhere. Could you please locate it and post it as well?

Excellent!! How lively her voice is...and how beautiful this piece is...I just sigh...
Couldn't agree more!

And to think this was my introduction to French art songs! It changed my life to this day.
