I think both of them missed out on something big growing up ,In different ways both are so darn needy. Mark should think about staying near his Grandparents, they don't have many years left. Marlena and her Mother should be thinking of this as well.
I think a lot of it is joking from her. She cares for him deeply. Just look at what she said and how she felt after a week apart when she went to jury. IMO they have a deep fun loving relationship
I think certain people show their love for each other in different ways, Elena doesn't seem to be the mushy gushy all over each other type of person (like Cody and Jessica), where as Mark seems like he would be if Elena wanted that. She seems to care for him, but she shows it through poking fun, when you are comfortable enough around someone to poke fun at them and be your natural self and they still love you it's a good relationship.
