It's also telling about Stallone, that he still has both of the turtles from this movie (at least they were still alive in 2019--I've not been able to find anything more recent)
Trivia fact: the actor who plays Gazzo, the loan shark who employees Rocky as a collector was played by the late great Joe Spinell (1936-1989), a famous New York based character actor who was a good friend of Sylvester Stallone. Joe Spinell played a variety of 'heavies' in his career; thugs, seedy gang leaders, serial killers, dirty cops, racists, mobsters, etc. In the first two Godfather films Spinell played the Corleone button man Willy Cici (the hitman who shoots the man in the revolving door).
The legendary story of how Carl Weathers won the part of Apollo is iconic. Sly had written the screenplay and read opposite Carl for his audition. Weathers was being animated during his audition, getting into the role, dancing around the room as he read. When the scene was over, the director silently was scribbling notes. Carl took the silence to mean he wasn't impressing the director and panicked. So blurted out he could do the scene better if he could read opposite a real actor. The room got real quiet. The director then informed Carl that the man reading lines with him was the film's actual leading man, Sly Stallone. Carl knew instantly he put his foot in his mouth, but staying in character and without missing a beat, then blurted out: 'Yeah? Well, maybe he'll get better.' The director and Sly looked at each orher making the same unspoken conclusion: We just found found our Apollo. If THAT isn't Creed, right there, what is, come on now. RIP Carl Weathers
There's something poetic about how he made Rocky and Rambo: First Blood to prove the world he was something, and then did it again in 2006 with Rocky 6 and Rambo 4 to prove he was still something
Another interesting fact, Burt Young, who played Pauli, was a boxer when he was in the service. He won 32 of 34 bouts. Sadly, Young passed away in October of 2023. RIP Burt.
This movie only surviving now Sylvester Stallone and Talía Shire. Director John Avildsen, Carl Weathers, Burt Young, Burgess Meredith, Tony Burton and Joe Spinell RIP
@francisalbert1799 And the music for that scene is perfect. Quietly perfect. Just as the more exuberant music is perfect for the later training scenes. I'm so glad they went with Bill Conti for the score. He was, like his music, the perfect choice.💙🎶🎵🩵
As a Philly girl, this movie will always have a special place in my heart! It wasn’t about winning - it was about going the distance. And that could be for anything in life. This was the beginning of a long franchise for Stallone. I remember when this came out. It was HUGE. It was nominated for 10 academy awards and won 3, including Best Picture. It’s the movie that made Stallone a star. What’s sweet is that Sylvester Stallone is a REALLY nice guy. I was lucky enough to live right near where some of these movies were shot and I saw “Sly” in person. He always takes time to stop and say hello to people that are hanging around watching the filming. He is really a down to Earth guy. He was actually born in New York City but went to live for a while in Northeast Philly and went to high school there - that’s where he was inspired to write Rocky.
❤Rocky and Adrian 💕💕💕💕 There were no sports shoes back in the day so Converse and sweat pants was it. In 1976 $40 bucks for that first fight would be $215 today and the 150k big fight would be 808k just to give you an idea how much our world has changed since the 70s.
An actual quote from Sylvester Stallone, since he was the person who also wrote the movie script, "At the end of the day 'Rocky' is a love story and he could never have reached the final bell without Adrian." ❤️
When Sylvester Stallone was in L.A he burned through all his money and sold everything including his dog to survive. When he wrote Rocky he demanded the lead role and refused all offers to buy it. When the studio gave in and gave him the role he used the money to straight away buy back his dog, the same one in the movie
I love Gazzo as a character. Viewers are so conditioned to believe someone like him is a bad guy that will go after Rocky, but his character subverts those expectations by being a loan shark with a heart of gold.
The documentary of sly writing this and what he was going through to get it approved is simply amazing! He is a true ICON of an actor. Your reactions make my life better. Thank you both for your hard work.❤❤❤

The whole series is a MUST WATCH. You will not be disappointed. It's a story of love, humbleness and rags to riches. My 70+ mom loves movies but didn't care for Rocky either until we sat down to binge the whole series and didn't want to stop. We paused around 3am and she wanted to continue as soon as we woke up. FYI, if I'm not mistaken, I believe that was his real dog. Sylvester was so poor prior to Rocky, he had to sell his dog because he couldn't feed it; after his success he went and bought him back for $50K.
Sylvester Stallone was born and raised in Hell’s Kitchen in NY. This movie brings back so many memories of growing up Italian in South Philly, I will never forget my neighbor working for the Philly school district and getting this movie, he took those big reels home..set up a huge projection screen by screwing a white sheet on a piece of plywood, and we watched this on the “lawn” which was about an 8x8 piece of grass lol. To this day I can’t imagine how he got his hands on that movie in 1978 but it is something I can never forget! He passed away since then but I would love to find out how in the world he managed to get the movies he did but what great memories he gave us all every summer! The girl Jodi Rocky walked home giving the lecture to was my daughters piano teachers daughter😊
I remember going to the theater in 1977 with friends in Queens NY to watch it. Can you believe people smoked in theaters back then? I was a kid coughing and smoked out😂
Sly was born in NY but raised in Philly. Rocky is a perfect representation of someone from South Philly. Take it from me, I’m born and raised and still in south Philly
I was born in Syracuse, NY but when I was 8, my dad’s work moved him to Philly. 1st thing he did w/my sister & I (we LOVED Rocky) was take us to the Art Museum’s steps and we ran to the top, posed like Rocky. The photos are brilliant.
When I was at Drexel University in the early 1980s I used to run from my dorm, cross the river and up the steps and back. It wasn't far, probably 2 miles round trip, but it was fun. I was on the 10th floor of Kelly Hall and could see the steps from my window.
I grew up there til I was 18. I’ve been to the steps once though….when I was 24🤦🏻♂️😝. Plus they take some liberties with how close south Philly is to The Art Museum😅
@@michaelblaine6494 Hahaha-facts. But still. Maybe we’re supposed to think he went for a really LONG run. U know, after sprinting along the water-in the *middle* of said long run & then bounding up the steps w/still some in the tank. Rocky IS the sh!t, but he must keep that spare energy somewhere we, as humans who can’t take get their faces pummeled for hours & not die, can’t access. Lol
The punches during boxing scenes in the Rocky movie series were no whiffs and taps. During a fight scene in Rocky IV, Stallone took a punch from 6'4" karate champion Dolph Lundgren that put him in ICU for nine days. Rocky !!, III, and IV are sooo worth watching - all are musts for Asia to watch!
I love watching people (especially women) seeing Rocky for the first time expecting a boxing movie when in fact it's a love story and an underdog finally reaching his potential story with a boxing backdrop. I'm only 1:21 in and looking forward to Asia realizing what it's really about. Edit: I've just seen your closing comments and I'm grinning from ear to ear. YES BJ, she should see Rocky II. I remember as a kid in the 70's calling on friends. We would stand outside their house and shout "Calling on 'name' to come out to play." So it wasn't as uncommon as you might think to shout out a window. When time to go home a shout out the window calling you home was also common in our neighborhood.
After Sylvester Stallone's parents, Jackie and Frank Stallone, were divorced in 1957, he moved from New York to the suburbs of Philadelphia. He lived in Philly with his mother and her new husband Anthony Filita, a pizza manufacturer. Sly was 15 years old when he moved to Philly. Fun fact: Butkus the dog was Sly's pet in real life when he was making this movie.
I think it should be noted Stallone literally had $200 in his bank account when he made this. He wrote the movie himself and was offered upwards of $250,000 to sell the script and have a major star play the role of Rocky since Stallone was unknown. Stallone stuck to his gins and did not sell. The movie went in to win the Oscars for Best picture and Best and Best director while Stallone got a nomination for best actor. It truly is a Rocky story in itself.
Rocky 4 (1985) is my personal favorite Sylvester Stallone directed it and got Dolph Lundgren as a great! villain that makes the film work Carl Weathers also comes out in it
Interesting fact: The make-up for Rocky and Apollo's fight was done by Michael Westmore, Westmore is known for creating the alien make-up for characters on such shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation. For Rocky, he came up with the bloody eye for Stallone during the "Cut me, Mick.." scene.

The Rocky character is based on chuck wepner a real boxer and The Apollo Creed character is obviously inspired by Ali. in 1975 chuck wepner earned a shot at Ali but nobody gave him a chance. wepner was just expected to turn up and collect his paycheck and just be an easy win for Ali. and although Ali won in the 15th round Chuck wepner actually done better than anybody expected and wepner even dropped Ali. And that is what inspired Stalone to write Rocky.
First....rip Carl Weathers....unforgettable, you will be remembered for ages. So much you can tell about this movie. Stallone owes his life to this character. Writing the story, studio bosses not wanting this c-list actor to play the part but Stallone not bowing down eventhough he was at odd's end and could definitely use the money selling the script.....Rocky basically resembled his life at this point. It's in a way Stallone's life story.....he got one more chance....and made it. Butkus being his dog in real life. He sold him because he couldn't afford feeding him. Then buying him back after making money because of Rocky's success. Cuff and Link the turtles, who are still alive (not sure at this point but Stallone had/has them for years). The music....absolutely great. The moment you hear it it pumps you up. This is so much more than a boxing movie. It's a love story and a lesson in life.....to never give up. Life will beat you down sometimes, but you get up again and fight and take the chances you get. I f-ing love this movie.
As a Philly kid in the late 70s this franchise meant a lot to me. as a grown man with a family it has so many layers to it, I hope you watch the entire series cause it’s a great franchise.

Well, maybe he'll get better.'
The director and Sly looked at each orher making the same unspoken conclusion:
We just found found our Apollo.
RIP Burt.
Now Carl Weathers passed away as well.
RIP Carl Weathers and Burt Young
This movie only surviving now Sylvester Stallone and Talía Shire. Director John Avildsen, Carl Weathers, Burt Young, Burgess Meredith, Tony Burton and Joe Spinell RIP
YES! Asia you NEED to see Rocky 2.
That first morning of training is probably my favorite scene in all of cinema. Just beautiful.
@francisalbert1799
And the music for that scene is perfect. Quietly perfect. Just as the more exuberant music is perfect for the later training scenes.
I'm so glad they went with Bill Conti for the score. He was, like his music, the perfect choice.💙🎶🎵🩵
It was ingrained in me as a child❤
I can't believe you're just now watching Rocky! You're going to love it. ❤
Prepare to both fall in love with Rocky Balboa, but to also love the whole franchise! I'm excited to watch these with you two.
How Rocky was always thinking about Adrian ❤ whether he was being interviewed on national television or directly after the biggest fight of his life 🥴
When Sylvester Stallone was in L.A he burned through all his money and sold everything including his dog to survive. When he wrote Rocky he demanded the lead role and refused all offers to buy it. When the studio gave in and gave him the role he used the money to straight away buy back his dog, the same one in the movie
The first thing you learn when you watch the Rocky movies is its not a boxing story, it's a love story.
Remember, it's not a boxing movie, it's a love story.
Rocky’s boss is a made man in the mafia. Never directly said but implied.
I love Gazzo as a character. Viewers are so conditioned to believe someone like him is a bad guy that will go after Rocky, but his character subverts those expectations by being a loan shark with a heart of gold.
@@ShortyLongstrokin I wouldn't say heart of gold but not a complete douche and he did want to see Rocky do good.
This is LITERALLY my favorite couple on YT....bar none. Everyone in the world would be lucky to have friends in their life like these two people.
Asia I can't with you " Didn't he say the big roaches were in that room ? I am going to have to take a raincheck with the big roaches" 😳😂😂😂
The documentary of sly writing this and what he was going through to get it approved is simply amazing! He is a true ICON of an actor. Your reactions make my life better. Thank you both for your hard work.❤❤❤
Rocky was my fav series growing up, got me into boxing. I still play the Rocky themes in one of my gym playlists.
RIP Paulie :( 2023
(Edit) … omg, the day this was originally posted.. RIP Carl Weathers.. :(
The turtles belong to Sylvester Stallone and they’re still alive and he still has them!
or he says so. i mean who'll know the difference if he replaced them with a same sized one after one dies?
ps: i know pet turtles like sliders live long but maybe upto 40 years. not much longer.
@@sickturret3587 why would he lie..like what's the upside of that
@@BigBoss-zi5ss a sweet little thing that people can tell around to their friends whenever the movie is mentioned.
@@sickturret3587 they are turtles not a story of him saving children from a fire or something..idk just seems silly to make up a lie just for that reason..it's actually pathetic if it is for that reason
@@BigBoss-zi5ss i dunno, it's a good enough fact to write to strangers online or make it up to news. and don't take this as an arguement, i'm generally reluctant to believe what famous people (especially politicians and hollywood stars) say, that's all. cheers
Rocky is actually a love story that just happens to have boxing in it.
My son and I ran those steps In Philadelphia…. he was so happy!❤Talia Shire… Godfather series and Rocky series… she’s amazing in both roles.❤
Round 14 when Rocky gets up and it shows the look and demeanor of Apollo may be the most inspirational scene on film.
I thought he was raised in New York in Hell's Kitchen
I can't wait to go on this Rocky journey with y'all!!! Let's Go!!!
@@MrVvulf excellent! Loved that
I grew up there til I was 18.
Lol
Rocky 2 is really good too!!
Even more romance for you Asia!!
YES ASIA YOU NEED TO SEE #2!!
RIP Carl Weathers you legend 😪
I love watching people (especially women) seeing Rocky for the first time expecting a boxing movie when in fact it's a love story and an underdog finally reaching his potential story with a boxing backdrop. I'm only 1:21 in and looking forward to Asia realizing what it's really about.
Edit: I've just seen your closing comments and I'm grinning from ear to ear. YES BJ, she should see Rocky II. It begins right where this leaves off and it's one of the BEST sequels ever made like Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgement Day and The Godfather Part II, Love you guys. What a great couple you are. Please keep the GREAT reaction videos coming.
Great to see you guys react to this! Apollo said he did not want a rematch. Now I'm looking forward to see the whole series with you. Asia..you need to see Rocky II...
Besides the first one, Rocky III was always my favorite... Rocky vs Clubber Lang aka Mr. T was the shit, plus it had the Eye of the Tiger theme
I love every single one of your guy's videos! I work from home and it's so slow I literally binge watch all your movie reaction videos for my whole 9 hour long shift and laugh my ass off. You guys are funny as hell. Love your videos!!!
How crazy is this? Just watched this reaction and saw Appollo just passed away😭RIP CARL WEATHERS.Great reaction as always
Did you realize that Paulie (Burt Young) played Bobby Baccalieri’s father in S3E5 of the Sopranos? 👍
I remember as a kid in the 70's calling on friends. We would stand outside their house and shout "Calling on 'name' to come out to play." So it wasn't as uncommon as you might think to shout out a window. When time to go home a shout out the window calling you home was also common in our neighborhood.
It won the best picture academy award. So much you should look into about how this movie came to be. A true rocky story
Rules of the fight: If there is a split decision, the judges give it to the reigning champ.
RIP Carl Weathers. An absolute legend from my hometown of New Orleans.
I almost spit my drink out when I heard Asia hit that note from soul glow that was awesome lol
I saw this in the theater when it first came out, it was so good that at the end we all gave it a standing ovation!!!
Rambo is so good it's what got me started into watching action movies
The movie isn't about winning the fight, it's about going the distance. Rocky went the distance, got the respect and the girl. Love this movie.
Yes it used to be 15 rounds across all weight divisions, shorten to 12 in the 1990's.
You will LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Rocky II.
My favorite movie! My grandpa was a boxer and my dad's name is Rocky lol. Also...Stallone still has Cuff and Link.
That was the real Joe Frazier and the real Stu Nahan doing the ringside commentary.
Rocky 4 (1985) is my personal favorite Sylvester Stallone directed it and got Dolph Lundgren as a great! villain that makes the film work Carl Weathers also comes out in it
28 years later I still quote “I must break you”.
@@jgarofalo8813 You mean 39 years later lol
@@RAGING_MIRAGE omg I’m getting old. 😂
The words to the theme tune are “gonna fly now…. Gonna fly nowwwww”
Yes. You have to at least watch Rocky 2, Asia. It has at least 3 goosepimple moments!
He didn't lose...he stood the distance with the world champion. That feat was enough to make him famous and change his life.
y'all absolutely need to watch the entire series.
He got a chance and he tried his best....and in a way he did win. He won Adriene.
This was a masterclass by BJ on watching a sports movie with your girl. Bravo sir.
PLEASE watch ALL of the Rocky movies!!! They are all amazing. My favorite is "Rocky 4". I cannot wait to watch you guys watch them all. I adore you both. Asia, you make me laugh SO hard!! "His heads gonna pop off his body!!" I almost spit my water out of my mouth when you said that. 🤣 Also, when you said "They cut him to deflate his eye". You are so funny!! 🤣😂😭
Love you both! ❤❤
Yes, Rocky two, they have a rematch, Asia you need to watch the Rocky trilogies
You need to see Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V, Rocky VI, Creed, Creed II, and Creed III. The song is "Gonna Fly Now"
The can stop after Rocky IV
And Rocky Balboa!
Not Creed III
@@cmdrvarna The first 2 Creed movies (haven't seen the third yet) are well worth a watch, they're pretty great movies in their own right. Rocky V is trash but wasn't Rocky Balboa pretty good too?
The Creed movies are not associated with the Rocky movies.
I hope you watch all rocky movies🔥🔥
Such a perfectly casted movie. Everyone slayed their parts making the movie so quotable even from people with a single line "hey, the meat guy's stickin his face in!"
Of course !!!!.you have to watch at the very least 2..3...and 4 now!!!!💪
I'm a 30 year old woman and I broke my nose when I was in 2nd grade. The doctor said it couldn't be fixed until my bones stopped growing, which was when I was 18.
Yes Asia, breaking your nose hurts a lot. 😢😢
ROCKY 2....Let's Go!
Ok now yall have to watch all 9 films. Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V, Rocky Balboa, Creed, Creed II, and Creed III.
You need to watch ALL 6 ROCKY MOVIES. DONT STOP.
Some are better than others, but its worth it
I totally enjoyed your reaction Asia! I think a lot of us ladies didn't care to watch this movie at first, but once you see the first, you gotta watch them all. The love story of Rocky and Adrian is so beautiful throughout the movies. And the soundtracks are soooo good! Iconic
When he calls for Adrien at the end it always makes me cry! He loves her so much and just needed her to be there.
Slapping that like proactively in anticipation for an entire marathon!
Just saying , Rocky's defense was taking every punch to the head, cuz his heart was always protected, and nobody can beat the ❤
years later they found out he had a crayon stuck in his brain
Rocky I, II, III, IV are all good movies.
Each one getting more ridiculous and fun
VI was good too! (Rocky Balboa)
