    On lake Huron they have Atlantic salmon and the biologist that I met told me that the Atlantic salmon fight so hard to escape that they almost always die. So they recommend that if you catch one that you keep it because if you try to release it that it will probably die . And they are great table fair.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. Both Atlantic salmon and brown trout are incredible fighters. I've always enjoyed my experiences with them while fishing in Europe.

    Sorry for my ignorance, but what's the wheel on the stern for?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That wheel is for steering the motor while trolling instead of using the main steering wheel. This way you are all the way at the back of the boat, being able to see the rods by turning your head up to 90 degrees, seeing the depth sounder in front of you, instead of sitting at the driver seat, turning 180 degrees for the rod while also looking forward to make sure you're not running into trouble. I'm pretty sure it is custom built in by themselves, a really great idea.

    Hello from Minnesota! That was an awesome video! I've never see that style of reel before, like a cross between a fly reel and a bait caster?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Kyle! Those reels are pretty unique and pretty much only exclusively used in British Columbia (even down in Washington State they are not really used for salmon fishing), probably because we are strange that way. 😉 They are known as mooching reels, more like a centerpin reels, except they have a drag system. We use them mostly because people want to stick with the tradition, and the fight is more challenging/exciting with them since the gear ratio is one to one. They function pretty much the same as the baitcasting reels. The free spool function allows the line to go down with the downrigger really smoothly, and the drag system does exactly what it's supposed to, slowing the fish down when they get on the hook.

    • @mr.schwartz2090
      @mr.schwartz2090 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishingwithRod Interesting stuff! They look elegantly simplistic. Newer isn't always better! You guys looked to do alright! Plus tradition is worth something. As you say it looks like it really adds to the sport seeing as Kitty lost her first one and really didn't look to do anything wrong! Thank you for the rundown.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah definitely. When it comes to maintenance and durability, you really can't go wrong with these reels because the design is so simplistic. Unscrew, a quick rinse, re-grease and re-assemble, they'd last forever.

    • @robgrubb420

    Rod, what kind of rod is that? I’m trying to pick up one just like that for my Islander MR3

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rod is a Shimano Technium. These are the models available:
      fish.shimano.com/content/fish/northamerica/us/en/homepage/Shimano_Product_Page.P-TECHNIUM_MOOCHING_A.html
      The length is 10'6" for all of them, just the lb ratings are different. I personally like the 12-20lb. Dave Murphy in the video has also done a separate video with a good overview of this setup:
      th-cam.com/video/3QLnUS_kLXU/w-d-xo.html
      You can also go with the Clarus models, which are also great at a lower price point:

    Do the salmon usually release the clip on their own?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time they don't. It also depends on how firmly you're securing your lines to the clips. If you're fishing in an area with strong current or deeper water, you'd want to have the line much further inside the clip so they don't come undone too easily, which means it'd be harder for the fish to pull out. It also depends on the size of the fish too, as well as whether you are going with or against the current. Any fish over 20lb would most likely pull the line off the clip, especially if you are going against the current.

  • @MrKveite1
    @MrKveite1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you are an amateur like me and do a litte research on landed fish ratio on rodholder or handheld rod over 500 trollingtrips you will find that the ratio on both salmon and halibut is about 35% higher with a handheldt rod. Now obv 500 trollingtrips isnt much to base that one but it gives a hint imo.
