Your an awesome Art coach. I now call myself an Artist after watching videos where you explain your view on the subject. My confidence has soared since watching your videos. Thanks for everything you do.
Thanks for this. Something you said reminded me of a time I asked my 60yo mother how old she was when she felt like a “real” adult. She said, “I’ll let you know when it happens.” Calling yourself an artist is really the same thing. Make art? You’re an artist. There are no “pretend artists” just like there are no “pretend adults.”
I like her response. I never considered myself sn adult until someone pointed out my age. Yeah, I'm an adult. no one looks out for me or makes my decisions. I'm also an artist! Cheers.
Thank you for the pep talk. It seemed sincere...art is in my blood and has been for years...my blood type is cadmium red (hue). But I totally lack confidence...you made some good points. Thanks.
When I say to a new person, "Im an artist." And they say, " Where have I seen your work?" I have learned to say. "Well, I'm not Picasso." Most of these people dont even follow artists.
Thank you for being active in promoting the value and values of artists of all types, abilities, talents, genres, training, and levels of Passion. Thank you!
Hey thanks for the video. I am in a odd spot as a middle aged man who is starting to pursue interest in art. My family is very blue collar, and I feel odd saying this but I was given the impression as a child that artists were "weird" and/or "lesser than". Now that I am older, I can see the type people my parents are. I grew up with "The Secret of Nymh", "The Dark Crystal" "The Secret World of Og" and "Fraggle Rock" and "The Neverending Story", leave me along for 5 minutes in the wilderness and my brain will start creating entire worlds. Now with 3D animation software, I see tools for the first time in my life that will let me create the creations in my head. The closest someone could can themselves a "artist" in my family and not get mock is they would have to make some real money doing it or you can call yourself a "bullshit artist". Some may be painters, some sculptors, and some writers but, the forever-curious position I seem to hold as "story-teller" is not a artistic profession I have heard anyone claim. I appreciate a video like this because this is a real question people ask themselves. Thanks 😁
Great video, I completely agree and it is definitely down to confidence. When I first started selling my work I called myself a painter. However people assumed I was a house painter so I reluctantly started saying Artist instead. Now I can see it was due to a lack of confidence.
I have just begun to believe I'm an artist and call myself an artist because I show up and do the work almost every day at my worktable. Mixed-media collage has set me free. It is the air I breath. It's what excites me and enriches my life. It's my voice and my therapy and I can't imagine living with out it.
for years i refused to call my self a artist but in a way it was good cuz i wasnt serious about things then. Once i started to get serious and doing more art in general that is when i slowly decided to call myself one.
I always referred to myself as an inspiring artist because I’ve never produced a piece that I’ve sold. Recently my husband introduced me as an artist and I was thinking well, someone describing me would give me that tittle so why shouldn’t I give myself that title? I’m short, I have long hair, i work in hospitality service and I’m an artist. I love that you chose to do this topic!
I have not gone to art school but have learned acrylic painting from videos of which I have sold some paintings. Thank you for this explanation when to call myself and artist. 😀
The problem why I don't want to call myself an artist is that I never liked or actually enjoyed my artwork and I really struggle to find motivation to create anything. I even wanted to abandon that activity, but it's too significant habit and I just can't get it out of my mind.
I don't know if I "Can" call myself an artist, but I DO call myself one. My Mother and some other people I know, say that you can't be called an artist until you've sold something you've created. I've been creating (crafty stuff, and art stuff) Ever since I could hold a pencil. And I have what I call the "Artist mentality". .... (where things all around me inspire me.... and I just think creatively, all the time... and stuff... ) I agree with you about photo-realism. - I do want to reach that skill level though, so that i can make my fantasy creatures, and friendly aliens look more real. I am an artist, because it's the only thing I "identify" with.
In my opinion, you can call yourself an artist once you've dedicated yourself to it. In other words, once you advance beyond solely drawing stick figure doodles in class and start saying "how can I improve" without immediately giving up once you realize how hard it is (y'know, like the classmates and co-workers and such who demand we teach them how to draw then give up within 2 minutes), you are an artist. To me, you can call yourself a *professional* artist once there's a demand for your services outside of relatives and close friends wanting Christmas and birthday presents. You don't even actually have had to sell something yet. Just at least have people around you who genuinely want your art and would legitimately purchase your artwork once they have the money.
I am an artist because the day I've started painting my view for the whole world changed. If a day passes without a brushstroke I feel empty. I am a whole being because I paint.
Ouch, this hit me between the eyes :). I love art and have done quite a bit, but never sold anything ( I give it away :) ) I never call myself an artist. I will now, because...........I was telling my granddaughter the other day she has to have CONFIDENCE, not care what others think (except those who are important) and take a stand.......so, I am now an artist.
I am an artist. I have been obsessed with art and creation for as long as I can remember and on top of that I translate everything around me in images. I can see a bird in the fold of your t-shirt. LOL
Yes I feel guilty and ...not feeling comfortable with it..i always wanted to be one but because i think I have not created anything that is qualified as an “art” that’s why
Seriously Up until this jam I was basically waiting for permission “big air quotes” to call myself an artist and to take myself seriously and to sell art. Despite 5 art shows and selling my first pieces last year and taking so much of my energy to grow. It’s always a struggle and I’m glad I watched this.
Thanks for this Michael! I rarely call myself an artist but if I do mention it I always preface it with "wannabe". I enjoy drawing and painting but I seriously doubt any of my work will hang in any gallery or museum. 😁
I've done it long enough - saying I don't know if I'm an artist or not but I like it as a hobby. My friend looked around the room at all my stuff and said "You've got to be kidding. Of course you're an artist!" I'm an artist.
I've just recently started referring to myself as an artist, although I also like the term creative because I feel like what's deemed art is a more broad spectrum than what the term artist covers
Hi,Jerry ..Its interesting thoughts ..I was saw lot of people who was go in scool for beeing Artist and after was not do nothing.Even lot of them have no scool Art made and was just interested to create something new experimenting with draw and create and they was learn lot about all cross doing that, but after one time they was let it and not doing it ..I think Artist is all life time profesion, and can learn it also all life time (with out scool teachers too).Talented people and creative people esess and keep doing new stuffs in Art..others just imitate them as hobby maker ..But ,everybody who create something can be an Artist if not give upp with time and work inaf an it.I mean ,,Real Artists, create something new and thats can call Art ,copying everybody can ..
I tell people I'm an artist, I've illustrated two picture books (working on a third at the moment) and sell work in a gallery, but then I get people expecting me to do art jobs which just aren't the type of art I do, so sometimes it's easier to tell people "I'm a picture book illustrator" than "I'm an artist" because it limits expectations and the number of times I get asked to do weird stuff for free XD. It's taken me ages to work up to saying "I'm an artist" though, for a long time I was telling people "I'm learning art" or finding some way of avoiding the whole art subject because I was worried they would want to see my art and it wouldn't be good enough. Meeting other artists who have work in the gallery I'm in has been a big help, they all have differing amounts of experience and different art paths, and it's shown me that age, background and schooling are basically irrelevant when it comes to selling art, you just have to make something that appeals to someone.
If you made it, someone wants to buy it and if someone wants to buy it, that means hundreds or thousands of people want to buy it. The reason for this is because there's only so many people in the world which means that there can only be so many kinds of people in the world, which means you have an audiance. Plus if you factor in emotions, seasons and times of day - which of course is a season in and of itself, in actuality everyone's your audiance, even the ones who say they don't like art because they need it. Art is not a by-product it is a necessity.
I think that no matter how skilled, if someone has no vision and is motivated by entirely money/fame, then they are not an artist, just an illustrator/painter whatever their craft is. An architect for example generally wont call themselves an artist, but look at their work, it's practically art in and of itself at times, and I might be inclined to disagree in many cases and say they are indeed artists whether they like it or not. My point is that there is a difference in selling a craft and following an artistic passion. If someone merely does basic, generic artistic work for money, that person is just selling a craft, if that same person goes home and works on a personal art project(regardless of if they do sell it or not) then they are an artist. I just imagine someone calling themselves an artist, and it turns out they just do generic anime style couples art for commission part time, and I feel like they should focus more on their journey to becoming an artist rather than falsifying a destination to live in.
Thank you! I struggle with this often. I've read and been told that I'm not an artist unless I can draw or have sold something. I can sell but I'm soft lol. And I draw. With paint. And I am mainly self taught so i don't count apparently. What do we say to people that are also artists that feel I or others like me don't qualify to be called an Artist? It is heart breaking when this happens bc to me, everyone is an artist in their own right, not just before a canvas.
I think if you did/do art by profession on any lvl, you'r an artist. Others can be categorize as an extra set of skills you dabble in your time - you draw, paint, play football, swim, music, read ............
To be my qualifications of becoming and artist is that i have to draw an inkling from splatoon everyday for 30 days and then if i can manage to do it without missing a day then i can call myself an artist:)
i think where i have trouble isnt in just calling my self an artist i do art i do a lor of art that why im in art school but calling my self a comic artist is where i start to feel guilty even though thats my major i only ever make shotty comics and only for class i rarely make comics outside of class and i feel like maybe i havent made enough for me to be a comic artist
Mike, I work at Dunkin Donuts. You are not a tool if you call the donuts by their seasonal names, but if you order one recently after getting our seasonal donuts, many employees will have a *wtf* moment and try to figure out which donut it actually is. Though I do ask if you order a dozen seasonal donuts, please call year round flavors by their original names. It will save you a lot of time. PS - When you realize the employee is having trouble seeing where the donut is that you like, I encourage you to point out where it is. Whenever I awkwardly can't find a donut and a customer points one out to me, it's like a saving grace.
me, at Michael's one day: "I need a spray sealant for this skull i painted" clerk: "this over here, you don't need that over there that's what real artists use" .... ......
Thanks for all your advice. I believe that we are all Student Artists continuing struggle to achieve best work but it's never good enough despite what anyone says. So when you pass on and your work survives your mortality then you are a finally a Artist. Have a Great life
I so disagree with everything you said in this video. There is a difference between being creative and being an artist. Calling everyone who walks into an art supply shop an artist is ridiculous. Or anyone who watches this video. Etc. Etc.
Hi Piefje, It is completely OK to disagree with me, as this is just my opinion, and you are absolutely welcome to your own. I just want to point out one thing though based on what you said. Everyone can be an artist if they identify as one. Whether they are a good artist or not is up to you but at the foundation, if they say they are, they are. You can judge what type from there.
I like your theory, yes, I need to call myself an artist or photographer coz it immediately makes me get into the mental state
I try. I also have rinsed my brush in my coffee.
I know I am an artist because creating art fills my spirit. I am a better person when I create. Your message is so right.

The English Oxford Dictionary describes "Artist" as:- A person who practices any form of art.
I have not gone to art school but have learned acrylic painting from videos of which I have sold some paintings. Thank you for this explanation when to call myself and artist. 😀

Total Trash Mammal , that's an accurate assessment in my opinion. 👍👍
Total Trash Mammal -->*nods* I like that way of looking at it. =)
I am an aspiring artist. Meaning I have several half finished projects. Once I complete one and display it in my home I will call myself an artist 👨🎤
Yes. Hell yes.
Love the painting behind you
N I love to say I m an Artist
Thanks for the video
What if the customer is friend/family member who is NOT an artist, buying something for an artist friend/family member? This could get tricky.
4:41 That's it! That's how you know :)
I am an artist because the day I've started painting my view for the whole world changed. If a day passes without a brushstroke I feel empty. I am a whole being because I paint.
I’ve made a couple of paintings under 15 maybe... but I feel like a poser if I call myself an artist
I call myself an artist because I create. I draw, paint make jewelry and many other mediums. I didn’t go to art school, I am self taught.
I love your videos. I agree with you 100%
thanks for the confident boost ❤

still too early to be an ARTIST> I REFER to myself as a PAINT MANIPULATOR
