The flowering stem of the garlic plant is called a "garlic scape" in English. (I see you put it in the video later!) The "mystery vegetable" is a type of Brassica (mustard family) called 儿菜, very common in winter here in Sichuan.
@@MiriamFollin 客气了!Yes, brussels sprouts are also a Brassica, although much stronger in flavor. Here in Sichuan, 儿菜 is typically pickled (Sichuan pickles are quite famous!) or sliced and stir-fried simply (perhaps with a little sliced pork). My personal home-cooking favorite, though, is briefly boiled and served with a chili-oil dipping sauce. P.S. Your husband and kid are adorable!

Miriam not only married the the man she loves but also the country. It also helps the accepted his and adores her and introduces her to the traditional customs and practices. Her seamlessly merged the two cultures with minimal effort. She is like Pearl Buck of last century but without the baggages of children of missionaries of old China. When the time is right she should write a book about herself and family so steeped in traditional rural life and customs in China.
I was raised in a family that didn't celebrate Christmas because of religious beliefs. When I married and left that religion and had two small boys I wanted to start the celebration for them so we could create our own traditions. I went to the library to find a book about Christmas as I had no idea. Unfortunately the book I found was by Martha Stewart, who does everything to extreme. So I made my own fruitcakes, but first I had to make my own grand marnier as that's what SHE said, then my gingerbread house was more a gingerbread mansion. Anyway I finally got the knack of how to do things my way, which led to many happy Christmases for my kids. It was always just me and them as my family didn't accept me leaving the religion. I see the family love around you, even though the customs are different, the love and willingness are there. You are so blessed and I wish you even more joy in your future. Happy New Year to you all.
Greetings from the United states. 😁 I think that it's wonderful that you and your husband are sharing and getting to know each others culture. God bless you both and you have a beautiful little boy!
You can see how much they all want to celebrate with you a holiday that they never celebrated and eat food that is unfamiliar to them. That is called: family and love. Happy Christmas you and your family Miriam.
When we love our Christmas memories it is even more difficult to go without. After our mother died, my sisters and I tried Christmas in different ways, mostly different from my favorite traditions created by my mother and her dearest friends. (These were not religious people, but could they ever create the spirit and magic of the season.) One of my sisters lived far away for many years and had established her own traditions there. She no longer connected with my mother’s traditions, and each year has pushed for less and less. My other sister would go along with that till we were just having dinner together, not much different than any other dinner together, on Christmas day. I was feeling sadder by the year. Finally, 15 years later, this year, instead of lobbying for more Christmas with my sisters (which was feeling all wrong, and was unsuccessful anyway) I realized I would have to take matters in my own hands and make Christmas for myself as I had loved it. This meant a party on the Eve as the quintessential part, with dear friends, fun food, cocktails, wine, music, and of course magical decorations here & there, with Christmas lights sprinkled on the tree and all around, and dancing candlelight. My friends loved everything about it, and the feeling was everything I loved. My sister had Christmas her way-almost no decorations, Christmas movies on the television with her son, and Chinese take-out-and she loved it. I’m pretty sure we’ll allow these to be our new traditions now. Sometimes we have to give ourselves the comfort and magic of Christmas, whatever that means to each one. I hope you can give yourself Christmas in Sweden whenever you wish, or can create the full light and spirit of your traditions for your friends and family in China to discover, whenever you need to bask in the feeling and reflection of a little Christmas magic. I’m thinking it will catch on!🎄 💞Sending a belated Merry Christmas hug to you💞and Happy New Year!
Miriam, it seems your Christmas in China was definitely a success! The first year I celebrated Christmas here was the first time I'd ever cooked an entire meal for my in-laws (and all American food!) I decorated my front door with sparkly garlands and a Chinese Santa Claus and put up my artificial tree listening to Christmas music. Once it was all said and done, I think keeping busy during the holiday made it feel much more real! Every year since then I add another dish to the dinner and try to share the holiday with different friends each time, so everyone can get to know what American Christmas is like. I think it's different important to exchange culture this way in an international family :) Sending love!
Awww the end of your video made me kinda sad... I can see that in your heart your missing home very much this time of year. It must be very hard to not only be away from home but also away from your culture... I hope you found some Christmas joy in it all... much love from Canada
Beautiful family. It’s good to see the acceptance of your husband’s family for you and you for them. It’s nice to see grandpa with your son. I miss my Chinese grandpa. He was such a strict person with everyone and with everything. My Chinese grandpa was a smart man. But for me I feel he was so sweet and loving and he spoiled me. I miss and love him. Hy Miriam! My name is also Mirjam, i lived for one year in Shenzhen, Longgang and it was so amazing!! I am learning chinese since 2 years and when Covid is over, i really want to come back! It was the best time in my life! It was sometimes hard because of the language, the food and especially the difference culture (i am an italian woman) but i felt never been before so safe as in China! Stay well and a lot of greets to your family!!
Has your family tasted Swedish Christmas ham, meatballs, herring and Janssons, and kale boiled with the broth from the ham? It would be nice to see a traditional "granny-style" Swedish Christmas dinner, and to see what they think about it.
Miriam your Christmas looked wonderful combinding sweeden's holidays with Chinese holidays. Both families looked happy, thanks for sharing with me, and others. Many blessings to you and family.
Any Christmas decorations in cities like Shanghai? Perhaps you should take a vacation with the family there if Christmas is celebrated. Or, fly to Singapore, which is only half the time to Sweden. There, you will see how Christmas is celebrated in tropical weather! English is widely spoken there and Mandarin is also spoken by most of the the Chinese population, so will be good for hubby too!
Awh! I welled up for you, as Christmas in the west is so special! Merry Christmas To you and next year when you’re in Sweden, take down all the decorations and pack them to take back to China! Along with some goodies to use for your next Christmas.
It can be a little lonely when you are the only one celebrating a holiday in your family. I sort of gave up on Christmas. I loved your Christmas though. The saffron bread looked delicious. Thanks for sharing.
you are a such nice, loving, kind, realistic, creative girl! and you have brought all the happiness not only to your family and also to your in-law's . God bless you and your family! By the way your husband is very hamsome and your son is so adorable!
I spent Christmas in Shanghai last year and I had such a blast. They’ve got so many Christmas markets there! Everywhere you go you see Christmas trees too, made everything feel so festive.
There's always have an atmosphere of contentment and peace in ur vlogs and I love it! It feels so soothing bringing me back to my traditional childhood as well. I can relate to the feeling on the last part dat u rily miss Sweden so badly. Hope u can get there together wid ur family when the pandemic is over. Merry Christmas to u and to ur loved ones! ❤
Although much belated, but Merry Christmas. What a beautiful unique Christmas in Qing Hai, I love San San's outfit for dinner. I think he will much appreciate his first Christmas when he grew up and watch this. I grew up in China and in a situation in my early years I never got to celebrate holidays with family... and I did not get a chance to learn what holiday really meant. But it is more like everyone else is doing it, so I joined to celebrate Chinese New Year, Christmas, etc. It was only much later in life, I begin to really observe and understand the meaning of holidays, although I have celebrated all kinds of holidays now but I feel the strongest emotional connection with Christmas. I am living in the US now, and I think if I moved, I would really miss Christmas, the energy, the spirit of it. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful special Christmas.
This is about Christmas! Cooking together and enjoy a good Christmas home made dinner with who we love. I especially want to thank you not focusing tearing wrapping to open presents. Excellent video and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Happy New Year from California! In Hawaii we say Kung Hay Fat Choy! Both for Jan 1 New Year and Lunar New Year that Asian cultures celebrate. Bless you and your wonderful family. Aloha! ❤️🌺
Miriam, this video is exquisitely beautiful, and exquisitely poignant. You did a magnificent job of making a first Christmas for your Chinese family. I'm sure they were pleased and touched to join with you in one of your traditions. I am glad to know you did have some moments of true Christmas feeling. The meal you made should be in a magazine! Would it be possible for you to share your 'recipe' for the small Christmas lentil burger/patties you made? They look so delicious. Wishing you all good things in the coming year, from Israel.
Merry Christmas! Definitely continue to celebrate Christmas in China. You're making Christmas memories for your kids! I live in the US and my parents are from Beijing, and I really wish they had made Chinese New Year more of a big deal for us while I was growing up :)
Your family is beautiful! I had a thought that I would love to share with you, this is coming from someone who has lived in many places around the world (sadly, not China), when it comes to Christmas. You made me a little sad at the end of this video because I knew the same sadness. Missing home, the traditions and your memories. Can I suggest finding other foreigners living there, who are far from home too. Bring everyone together, each making a dish from home to pass at a meal? Inviting them over to decorate by making paper chains , paper snow flakes, or some home made decorations. Getting baby involved in arts and crafts time. It will bring more meaning to your new home in China. Including the in laws as you did is sweet and helps them understand you. Love it! I know with stupid covid, that it might be a problem and you know your area better than us, so this is just a thought! PS I am so jealous of you!!! This was always a dream of mine , so I am getting to experience it through you!
Just back from Christmas holiday in China last week. I spent my Christmas day on Dec 25 rafting in Yulong River, Yangshuo Guilin. Then had Christmas dinner w/ my wife and kids in a German restaurant in the old town. Merry belated Christmas Miriam.
Thanks for this Christmas-y video, Miriam. I want to greet you a very merry Christmas and a very happy new year. The last part of the video, I could feel your sentiment... hugs!!!
Hello. Merry Christmas. I really enjoyed stepping off into your experience, it felt nice. You did a really fabulous job putting on Christmas for your family. I bet they will talk about it forever. Your family is beautiful. What a great life experience you are having. Thank you for sharing!
Beautifully edited video. I enjoyed it so much. Patiently you shared the meaning of Christmas with a family that will one day celebrate with you in great joy.
Miriam, I applaud you for introducing Swedish Christmas customs to your Chinese family...they may not have the same connection as you, but you have shared an important part of yourself with them. When you celebrate Christmas in Sweden next year, please video it? I am an American, and I have only a vague idea of what Christmas is like in Sweden. Thank you for sharing - Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Awesome video looks like everyone had a good dinner I no how Tough not being home for Xmas I sent many Xmas in countries that don't Celebrate Christmas and it can be tough but I think you did a amazing job. Hopefully you can Celebrate it next year in Sweden.
awww... that's very sweet of you go share xmas with your chinese family. in a few weeks, you will celebrate chinese new years with them, no doubt. remember this is their equivalent to your Christmas. blessings of light. to good health and prosperity in this coming year.
I am so sad for you watching this video from a year ago that you are not able to spend Christmas in Sweden this year! You did a wonderful job last year with all your baking and cooking and sweet treats . I love that you used your mother in law's recipe and turned it into saffron bread! You are making new cross-cultural traditions and your Chinese family are getting to try something different. It must make for a richer life for all of you, although sometimes perhaps confusing, and sad, and frustrating. But you just keep trying. It isn't perfect but it's good enough. And it is worth the effort. Now I have to go and make some fudge because you keep making my mouth eater with your food. Tonight I made stir fried veggies and I was thinking of you. I was thinking I need some lessons from your MIL! Wishing you a warm and happy Christmas this year - I think starting early will help bring the spirit alive for you, and those Christmas cards that are coming will help you know how much this strange tech connection with you means to many of us out in the world. You have brought us into your world in so many intimate ways, andvwuth Yonghong and his family, and we are so much the richer for it. I wish we could send you videos back so you could know some of us too, and feel that the connection goes two ways.🎄❣🎄❣🎄
