But for emos, this wasn’t just a movie - it was a cultural moment that shaped a generation. 💔
💡 What made Donnie Darko resonate so deeply? From its eerie visuals and philosophical depth to a soundtrack that included haunting tracks like Gary Jules’ Mad World and Echo & The Bunnymen’s The Killing Moon, this film was emo in spirit before the scene took over the mainstream. Combine that with Donnie’s rebellion against conformity, his isolation, and his understated proto-emo style, and you’ve got a cinematic masterpiece that became an anthem for outsiders. 🎶

Great video! Love that movie and soundtrack, I was born during the revaluation summer of 85. I didn’t see DD until 2006, by then I was already doing the emo thing for about 6 or 7 years. Jimmy eat world was my first taste of emo when I heard clarity in 99 or 2000. I was waiting for bleed American to drop. Had already been listening to the 2 demo versions of sweetness for at least a year, and been dying by hair black and bought the black shoes and the button up collared shirts, and a bit of black nail paint- that was the look back then. And the used in 2002 cemented me as as a full blown y2k emo kid forever

I find it so refreshing that EMO kids finally found what no generation before them could; the strength to rebel against conforming to what society wanted. So strong. So forward thinking. So original. And they had their own look too. Nothing like the Goth/post punk scene of the 80s and 90s , nope, not even close. Entirely brand new scene with no equal. Not Hot Topic poser'$$$ at all.
    with love, Gen X.

It makes me sad that this movie gets lumped into emo cringe. It wasn't brilliant or groundbreaking, for sure, but it was different. It wasn't your every day run-of-the-mill Hollywood garbage we get bombarded with. It made you think about what was happening in the movie; it made you pay attention.

I loved this movie. I used to leave Donnie quotes as my AIM away message. Haha.

My emo/pop punk band in high school, in 2002-2004 had a song about Donnie Darko called "Open Up The Sky(Cellar Door)." So I am guilty of the title of this video haha
