Oof, I remember hearing about the Garfield assassination elsewhere, it seems like he ended up dying _because_ of the doctors' best efforts rather than despite them.

Part of Guiteau's defense was that he didn't kill Garfield; the doctors did. Fair play, honestly. The entire story of those 11 weeks will do nothing but make you sad and furious, but it's really fascinating to look into how their best intentions led to them making the worst possible decision at nearly every turn.

This might just be the dumbest reason to assassinate someone ever. And wouldn't have even worked if doctors had kept their grubby hands out of yhe wound.

I’m sure he had some sort of mental illness. Only way this can make sense.

specifically, it would have worked if the doctors didn't let ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL (aka, the man who invented the telephone) dictate where those grubby hands went

@@ultimateninjaboiIt’s a combination of what the og said and you said, really. Bell definitely had something to do with it, using the prototype to the metal detector, but the doctor wanted to work on Garfield for the credit of being the guy that saved the President and was a denier of germ theory, which was already pretty well established by then.

10:50 Fun fact, part of his defense was that Garfield was actually killed by the doctors, not him.

Garfield was a brilliant man and the last of the Lincoln brand republicans who wanted to reconstruct the south after the civil war.
We as Americans were robbed of a great leader when he was taken from us.
The doctors who tried to remove the bullets from him were so incompetent it makes you wonder if they wanted him to die to.
Alexander Graham bell the inventor of the phone and also the metal detector showed up and tried to locate the bullets.
They would only let them use the metal detector on Garfield while he lay on a bed with a metal spring mattress.
    This caused more damage.
They would not let him move the president.
The doctors also didn't believe in germ theory.
    Garfield died a horrible death.
I wish I could go back in time and save that man.
I wish we could see what he would have accomplished had this assassination failed.

Which is a damn shame to be honest. James Garfield was a brilliant man. A war vet with a lot of promise.

First read about this in Sarah Vowell's (the voice of Violet in the Incredibles movies) Assassination Vacation. There's also the song "Mister Garfield", famously performed by Johnny Cash, as well as the "Ballad of Guiteau" from the Musical "Assassins".
No mentioned of Garfield's Secretary of War - Robert Todd Lincoln, son of Abraham, who was present when Garfield was shot. Lincoln would also be in Buffalo when William McKinley was assassinated, the other assassination that I presume there wasn't time for.

The other one would be whoever assassinated McKinley.

Leon czolgosz. Wanted to join his local anarchist movement. A little weird and pushy so they wrote an article calling him a potential spy and to never speak to him. So he decided to prove himself by shooting McKinley. Turns out McKinley was so loved that even the anarchists liked him.
