I think it's hugely overrated by the critics for obvious reasons (deification of films with certain demographic boxes checked). The writing, unfortunately is pretty weak once you stop and think about it and the MC had zero character growth. IMO, while it's not the worst film I've ever seen, this one doesn't even come close to the first entry in the franchise. I also think it's pretty laughable that the actress thinks her character could actually take Dutch in a fight. Uh ... no, she couldn't.

Yes the main character is a woman, but the movie never says she’s better than the men or that she beats the predator because she’s a woman, she’s not a marry sue. She struggles and fails over and over again, she’s an actual character. She reminds me of heroines like Sarah Conner, who struggles and fights and never gives up. And that line about her wanting to be a hunter because others say she can’t, I find that very relatable because, if someone tells you you can’t do something, you automatically want to prove them wrong. That’s not woke, that’s human.

I love how this Predator was objectively smaller than it’s counterparts by comparison throughout franchise, but you don’t see anyone fixating on how he was able to lift a fully grown bear easily over his head, despite his size. Im not sure if a lot of the nay sayers about this movie will let themselves believe that women are actually people and can be written as such, to have their own unique personalities, strengths and weaknesses LOL. They’ll be damned before they let female protagonists look and act differently than what they think the perfect heroine SHOULD be 🤦🏻‍♀️
On the one hand I would have loved a little more insight for her motivations to become a hunter, how she developed her tracking skills, etc. On the other hand I’m glad the film didn’t go into a huge clunky exposition dump about her life, we were given the space to simply accept that it was just what she wanted to do, while the movie immediately tossed us into the action while the Predator hit the ground running.

I've said this earlier but Naru lived in a historical period where gender/sex defined the norms. You couldn't hunt if you were a women because you weren't seen as physically capable. A stronger man could go in your place, increasing efficiency of the hunt. Plus she lived at a time where a scrape was a death sentence. It wasn't seen very useful to send out a child bearer that could cause serious implications to the longevity of your tribe if something were to happen to her.
Fitting 21st century beliefs into an era that was established by the filmmakers as operating within our realm of reality is literally the very first thing they teach you NOT to do in history and philosophy class.

Naru felt so relatable to me (this coming from a Hispanic kid in 2022). She wants to prove herself in something she views as important in helping her community, and even though she’s constantly discouraged and yet she has the will to pull through. But when faced with a close family member doing the same thing but better, she starts to lose confidence, there’s this aura of her not being able to live up to her brother’s accomplishments and it gets to her, it’s only after using unorthodox tactics, her intellect, and a bit of support from her brother: the hyper skilled, badass that naru thought she could never live up to, does she start to succeed

    • @youseff500

Except unlike you Naru lived in a society that shunned disobedience from gender norms. I get that people call this movie woke because it's taking the modern view of powerful, masculine women and injecting it into past-century believes that were motivated by sex/gender. It's like when the devs of Battlefield 5 put a woman with a prosthetic limb into ww2.
Naru gets discouraged by the men who think she can't do it because that's what they believe, but that's alright because those were literally the norms back then. Regardless, consider yourself lucky to be able to challenge gender norms and take advantage of new opportunities. Naru, realistically, could never have experienced what you can now.

In prey, this shows the predator and what they are about by establishing what the whole race is about. In the original one I only knew his code and what he was doing killing them only because ik the general idea of what he is supposed to be. If I watched the first one the first time I would've just thought its an alien killing peope just because

If they make a sequel to this I almost hope it doesn't take place in the same setting. Especially since the flintlock and the art that ran under the credits heavily suggest the Predators come back having learned some valuable lessons and kill everyone then take the pistol as a trophy. That's not great. For now I can pretend that the Predator found it while out for a stroll because they left it behind after running out of gunpowder or whatever.

It’s a good movie. Better than the last one for sure.
Was it good enough for a theatrical release? Probably. But I totally get why the studios held it back for streaming. The last one sucked so bad it nearly killed the franchise.
Is it the best one ever? No not really.
To me first one is the best. What this new one lacked was a great big cast with good chemistry. Something that makes the first one iconic. You can’t beat the lead up to the jungle with all those 80s action heroes on the chopper.
The leads for the new movie were good but they made this almost a solo deal for the most part. A duo deal at best.
The problem with Predator franchise at its heart is that it’s the same story since first one: _namely, battling with and surviving the war with the Predator(s)_ all with varying degrees of execution. And that’s what this one did better than the previous one. Better execution but in the end it is still the same story.
Which is why for my second favorite movie I liked the 2010 one better. It is the only that tried something novel (the game reserve planet idea) since the first one and did a decent execution. Adrien Brody was pretty good as the lead. But even then it reverted to the same dynamic of battling with and surviving the war with the Predator(s).
In the end, the Predator franchise, I feel needs to think of a new dynamic cause so far they simply change the setting and the warriors. If they cannot do that then they are creatively bankrupt and each movie will have diminishing returns. Much like The Terminator franchise.

Nothing beats the first predator movie. But Prey is definitely the best movie to portray the predator. Even predators felt like a fan film that tried to focus on an interesting crew that fights a master hunter. What made this and predator special was the bare bones survival against a force of nature using nothing but sticks, rocks and wits. When they try to go past that it loses its intial draw in the first place. Lore is cool and all but it needs to done correctly and not just used to as filler ( like that stupid pyramids history in AvP)

My favourite predator movies are predator 1, predator 2 and predators. I’d chose predators over predator 2 any day because it’s a lot more interesting.
Idk what it is but prey was just basically boring, nothing was there to keep me interested in the movie except for the very few fight scenes that occurred.
Also some of the acting just seemed too douchy for me and out of place honestly, there was no need for a lot of it but I guess they had to have it so she could have character development and prove the others wrong.

Dude, have you ever seen any of the other Predator movies?? What are you talking about?? Dutch in the OG movie was the ONLY ONE to use mainly his brains to defeat the Predator. His physical strength and fighting skills proved to be totally insufficient against the creature. Then , we had Danny Glover and Adrien Brody. No use of brain at all by these 2 obviously miscasted main characters...Just their "physical strength" in head to head showdowns...Then, 2018 The Predator, don't quite remember this parody of a film, but I remember the main Predator getting both his legs and one arm chopped off and eventually dying in a cold blood kill with several headshots...No brains in this one either...And now, Naru...She used absolute, brute physical strength and Ninja like fighting skills to defeat the Predator. Where on earth did you witness her using brains?? The flower thing and the final biomask trap?? These 2 scenes were by far the most irrational and impossible to buy plot conveniences of the whole film!!! Enough to rank Prey as equal to the 2018 film in my Predator franchise movies list, with a total score of 0/10 for each one of them...!

Also, her brother admitted that he couldn't kill the lion without Naru's plan . Naru also couldn't have killed the predator without her brother and other people wearing down the predator and revealing its weaknesses first. It's ultimately about collaboration and the importance of having both strength and strategy.

That climax was NOT satisfying; the Predator shooting itself in the head was incredibly dumb. Does he not understand his own tech? If he’s trying to shoot her with his arrows even tho he doesn’t have his mask on, it implies he can aim manually - or at least that he has to activate his targeting laser for the “seeker” arrows. Instead, what we find out is that his targeting works regardless of if he’s wearing his mask, in which case why is he trying to shoot her with those arrows at all? If he doesn’t have his mask, the arrows are just going to fly off wherever his mask is pointing - which, for all he knows, is directly into the dirt and NOT at her - which is what they do. So yeah, it might make her smart that she set up the trap, but it also makes the Predator incredibly stupid that it works. His thought process should have been: “I don’t have my mask, I can’t target her so the arrows will just go wherever; I’m going to switch to [literally any of his other weapons].” And it IS just another version of the original movie, luring the Predator into a trap.

I agree with just about everything you've said but there's no way naru is more bad ass than Dutch. Prey makes it BELIEVABLE that naru was able to survive and finish off the feral predator. He takes so much abuse including a point-blank shot to the back of the head, so it's believable she's able to finish him off. He's tired, disoriented, severely injured, running out of weapons, missing his helmet so he can't see well at all, etc. Had the same final confrontation happened when the feral predator first arrived, and everything went the same way it did for naru, where she had the gun, knew what she knows about the predator, prepares, sets traps, everything, from the moment big beard wakes up with his leg missing, to when the predator arrives, had he just been dropped off, or wasn't severely injured, he would've annihilated naru almost instantly. It wouldn't have even been a fight scene, it would've been the predator kills naru scene lmao 🤣 but Dutch, well Dutch at least has a fighting chance physically and with his weapons. The only reason naru kills the feral predator is because he didn't kill her earlier. Had he not let her go and just killed her like everyone else it would've been over. But only because he DECIDES to let her live, does the predator get injured and disoriented and tired enough for naru to David and Goliath his ass. She's badass sure, but no one can say Taabe couldn't have done the exact same thing if not better had the predator decide to let him live the way he let naru live. We see him damn near kill it when he's fighting it hand to hand with a friggin bow and arrow. Just based on that alone you can clearly tell he could've done this. Not to take anything away from naru or say she isn't a bad ass, but even if she was male and the movie was exactly the same I would say the same thing. I still love this movie, but I was initially TERRIFIED of naru beating the predator with the power of her vagina, but they didn't do that thank God, unlike 2016 Ghostbusters, oceans 8, black Christmas, and all those other movies that bombed because they don't know how to make strong women without their main characterization being that they have a vagina and boobs and that makes them strong for some reason, but naru is a bad ass because she's intelligent. She can throw that tomahawk real good but she is mostly smart and that's what makes her bad ass more than anything else, because she's definitely not physically stronger than any of the men in her tribe. Maybe that pud that gets rekt by naru right before the predator shoots him with his spear gun, but she more out maneuvers him than brute force defeats him, but besides that dude losing, she's not on the level of strong "alpha" males like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jesse ventura, billy... billy, Carl weathers, and even Danny glover, Adrian brody, Lawrence fishburne, etc. It's just not gonna happen lmao it's not sexist to say men are objectively stronger when it comes to physical biological aspects of the male anatomy, it's just a fact, and it's doesn't mean women can't be strong or even be an outlier rarity and be stronger than a man. The same way Rhonda rousey or Amanda nunes would knock my ass out, but pretty much any male fighter would knock them out 9/10 times. The best male is just bigger faster stronger than the best female. A whole other argument for intelligence, I would say it goes by an individual basis which is smarter or not, but that's just me. But all of those things taken into account, besides prey shoving the feminist message down our throat too much, after that finally stops, the movie is non stop amazing. And like I said, they make it believable enough for me to suspends my disbelief that a 90 lb girl could take on a 400 lb 7 foot super monster, because he was so injures earlier. And that makes it relatively believable for naru to finish off the predator, at least for me.

The whole reason the first movie became such a classic is because of the creature reveal. The original Predator was a pretty horrifying beast that killed hulking men with 80s grade military weaponry with ease.
This new Predator....well, he didn't strike as much fear in my heart. Though I thought the bear scene was awesome, and it was pretty cool when he was chasing the Native warriors through that field.

OK I am sick of people treating Prey like some sort of coming of age movie. It just goes to show that we are so starved of genuine brilliant films that when a decent one comes out (especially one that exceeds expectations), we just shower it with praise. I truly believe we need to go back to differentiating between enjoying something and straight up claiming it's the best or making it out to seem like some sort of masterpiece. For example, I really enjoyed The Black Phone but I won't sit here and tell you it's the greatest horror movie of the past 5 years or something. I would respect this video more if the title/take was along the lines of "Why I love Prey" because objectively although entertaining, this movie has a lot of issues.
    What I Enjoyed:
Interesting concept of a 1719 Predator
The scenery, camera work and soundtrack work very well.
Showing the food chain in action was cool
    Main Issues:
Naru did not feel properly fleshed out and seriously lacked displaying emotional range e.g. Naru's older brother was brutally killed in front of her, why on earth is she smiling at the end of the movie? This should have been played as more of a bittersweet win. Her reaction to death throughout this movie and encountering the Predator is pretty lackluster.
I enjoyed that one take where she takes out the Frenchmen however, practically it just wasn't realistic for someone of that size.
The final fight was just silly for a multitude of reasons e.g. Predator straight up choke slams Naru but she still gets up...what???
Would give Prey a 5.8/10. Started good but began to fall off in the second half.

Any Predator movie after the first had to struggle against the legendary cast of that movie and it had some of the most memorable one liners in movie history. Stallones Expendable movies tried to recreate that magic, but they don't come close.
But I really like Predator 2, it "only" had Danny Glover as its main protagonist, but everything else upped game. The future it take place in reminds me of Robocop, and the dark humor also reminds of that movie. The fact the Predator was fighting on human home turf - in a city, and still was as menacing as ever was so badass + the movie expanded the lore massively.
Fighting someone like a Predator will make any human an underdog - even one played by Arnold. However Prey take that part of the franchise and perfects it, no miniguns 300 years ago.

I was particularly impressed by the actors playing the sister and brother, Naru and Taabe. They were very likable and felt authentic - and wow, did I ever root for Naru to be the victor (and her really good dog!).
Judging from the end credit teaser with the predators returning, I sincerely hope a sequel is in the cards. There's so much that can be expanded on; will Naru's tribe reluctantly work with the French men as well as any surrounding tribes to fight the predators? Or are the predators returning to focus on Naru as a warrior to fight again...maybe to reward her for her victory, but with strings attached?
    So much to build on.

That's not the least to point out, she suffered NO injuries getting slammed and thrown around by the Predator who wrestled a jumbo-sized bear and snapped its neck with just 1 punch to its face.
Oh and, she immediately figured out that her magical herbs would conceal her from the Predator's vision because she just had a Mary Sue IQ moment after seeing the Predator ignore an injured person who was sleeping on the ground and FAKING his death among other dead corpses without even knowing anything about the Predator's thermal vision. Such a convenience like she almost wrote her own script for that scenario!
The entire premise of the story is based off of a girl's necessity to prove her worth being just as good as a man, or even better than a man.
The show tries so hard to shroud or minimize the Mary Sueness of Naru's character by giving you a false sense of failure, for example, the mountain lion that she pierced through its abdomen with a spear, it was all her effort anyway in which her brother gave her credit for, and that her brother "STOLE" her pride for taking the easy kill because she had weakened the lion for him. That is the definition of woke.

You're a living proof of the easy-to-impress general audience that will accept anything thrown at you as long as it holds the title to what you're a fan of, a blind shill with 0 critical thinking and scrutiny of what you just saw operating on a hive-minded mentality that when everyone says it's good, you're supposed to believe it's good.
Naru is nothing short of a boring, monotonous and unconvincing cardboard character to be put in the storyline, if anything her dog does a better job at emoting some personalities.
