In 1984 I used to go out with a girl called Sharmila in Mumbai. She and her identical twin sister were university students and were recruited for a six-month study of the effects of nutrition and exercise. Sharmila was randomly selected to be part of the control group and didn't change her lifestyle. However, her sister underwent six months of weight training and high protein food. She not only put on some weight but strength out of proportion to the weight gain. This became apparent publicly at a party where we were all messing about armwrestling. When it was Sharmi and her sister's turn everyone stopped to watch because they were siblings and twins. Neither had armwrestled before, yet Sharmi couldn't even beat her sister 2 hands to 1. Both were embarrassed - Sharmi because she had lost so badly and her sister because she felt unfeminine being so dominant. It also undermined their joint income because they had topped up their student income with low-level modelling and appearance work as identical twins, but after her sister's weight gain this income dried up.
